San Diego Open - 6/6/09 - La Jolla

Post by Auroni »

This is an announcement for the San Diego Open, a "regular or slightly harder" difficulty tournament to take place on the beautiful UCSD campus on June 6th. The tournament will be a mirror of the Missouri Open taking place the same day, which will be edited by Shantanu Jha, Charlie Dees, and myself.

This tournament is packet submission, even for this mirror site. Any team that has played collegiate events on or prior to September 2007 is required to submit a packet. Anyone else may still reap the discounts ennumerated after this next part, but are not obligated to write anything. The distribution is as follows:
5/5 Literature
5/5 History
5/5 Science
3/3 Religion, Mythology, and Philosophy
3/3 Fine Arts
1/1 Social Science
1/1 Geography
1/1 Trash, Current Events, and “Other”

A more detailed breakdown by subjects can be found here - http://www.acf-quizbowl.com/documents/p ... stribution . The tournament will be aiming for that nebulous “between regionals and nationals” difficulty, akin to events like the Illinois Opens, Minnesota Open, VCU Open, or Chicago Open 2007. If you are unsure of how hard to write your packet, consult those events.

Our base fee is $120, and WE HAVE NO MINIMUM FEE. Our fee structure will be similar to that of the main site's, but I will not buy you a pizza if you submit a packet by the -$50 deadline.

A $50 discount for packets sent by April 4th.
A $25 discount for packets sent by April 18th.
$0 discount for packets sent by May 2nd.
$25 added for packets sent by May 9th.
$50 added for packets sent by May 16th.
And a $5 discount for each buzzer system your team brings.
And I'll throw in a $10 dollar discount per every 200 miles traveled as well.

SIDE EVENTS: An Asian literature singles event is being written by myself and Joe Hansen from Minnesota, and should have six rounds of 20 tossups ready by this tournament. I will hold it if there is sufficient interest, and link to that topic in the future. For now, questions about the set and packets should go to [email protected]. Questions about the logistics of this tournament should go to me at [email protected]

Thanks!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I can move the date a weekend or two if that works better with attending teams and their finals.

A quick glance at Southwest prices to San Diego indicates it is highly probable I will attend this tournament. I'll probably need some teammates, so if you're interested let me know.

Hi, I'm interested in attending the tourney. I dont know if I can get anyone else from the old UO team to come with me, but if not, I'd be interested in joining as a free agent or combining with maybe Bentley or someone else to form a team.

Sure, I'd be interested in forming a team with you, sc_from_ou.

Shoot me an e-mail at [email protected] (I also have some questions about the current UO quizbowl program).

Also, Auroni, can you confirm that this tournament will be happening on this weekend so I can book a ticket? I don't want to have a ticket booked and then have the date changed.

FYI, if you're considering a date change, the following weekend doesn't work for me (although 6/20 probably would).

I'm going to confirm that 6/6 is indeed the date for this tournament. There will be a side event on Saturday following the tournament, which might be my lit singles or the European History event, depending on whether I can finish lit singles (yeah, not sure yet)

There is tentative interest from a team of myself, Charles Meigs, and possibly a couple of other people. No packet until after ACF Nats, though.

So far, this is how the tournament stands:

Field:
Bentley + SC
Ray + UCLA
Dwight, Meigs, UCI?
Rancho Bernardo
Jerry?

This means we'll either do a double or triple round robin, maybe quadruple if the tentative teams don't show up.

I'm going to change a few things about packet submissions. Everyone except high schoolers are required to submit, but I'm not going to enforce packet penalties at this point. Discounts, of course, still will apply.

We are also going to mirror the European History tournament right after the main event itself, which will go until we get kicked out at some point.

I'll send this same information to everyone whose email I have right now, and as usual email me about anything. This should be a great tournament for everyone!

Hey all,

So there's a quick logistics update with the tournament. Auroni was supposed to email everyone or post it here or ask on IRC or something, though I'm not sure if he's gotten around to it. Just in case, here's the gist of the situation:

Apparently the campus does not allow student organizations to use classrooms past the last day of instruction June 5th and hence all our usual room reservations are not available. Right now, we have booked two rooms at the student center but they are not available until 2 PM, after which they are ours at 10:30 PM. So the question is, would everyone be OK with a tournament starting at 2 PM and going into the night? If not, what is the absolute latest time you want to get done by? We will try to figure out something that works for everyone since it's such a small field.

Please either reply here or via email, though if you email Auroni please CC me too at [email protected]

Since this tournament isn't going to require more than like 3 rooms to run, I think we should just meet somewhere on campus around a regular starting time and then squat in some rooms. Maybe Auroni should show up ahead of time and scout out some rooms that are open. Having run probably 10 tournaments in my life without actually reserving rooms, I don't think it should be much of a problem to find 2-3 places on campus with a reasonably private space and a power outlet.

This would also give us time to run Bruce's tournament which I'm very intersted in playing.

Bentley addressed my main concern about whether we'd have enough time for the history tourney if we started at 2 PM. My preference would be to start earlier than 2, although I suppose I'd be OK with it if necessary. I'd like to be done by 6 or 7 if at possible.

I am OK with trying to scour rooms at some early time in the morning and hoping we can find one...as long as people are OK with potentially waiting for a while to find a classroom.

Interest from our school is already very low, so I doubt we'd bother to drive down if the tourney is like 2PM to 6PM. I won't mind playing eurofest from say 9AM to 1PM, then break for lunch, then play some rounds of MO. We can probably just do free-for-all on the eurofest so would just need like one or two rooms. It would be reassuring to know we actually have enough teams to run a tournament, so I'd actually bother trying to get a car.

I mean, I didn't end up sending any questions in (this also means: editors, if you need freelance questions, let me know around NOW), but if it's an issue of "get people to show up" at this point, then I'll see what I can do. Hopefully people will have a clear answer from me one way or the other by tomorrow.

Oh yeah, and we need two buzzer systems. Can anyone bring any?

As the Irvine and UCLA buzzers are coming, I won't bother to take mine on the plane.

Hey everyone,

The plan right now is to meet at 9 AM at the entering/exiting floor of the Gilman parking structure....basically drive in and park on that floor. Prior to this, I will be going around the campus trying to find an open room; when I find one, we can all move together from GIlman Parking to said room where we will play the history side tournament in some format. We will break for lunch and then in the afternoon, we will play MO since we already have two rooms reserved for that.

The Gilman Parking structure is at the intersection of Villa La Jolla and Gilman, with a front entrance facing that intersection and a side entrance on Russel Drive...either one of those is fine:

Parking is FREE at UCSD on the weekends so there's no need to worry about that...just don't park in spaces that specifically say reserved 24/7 or service yard only or something.

If you get lost/need further directions, my phone is 510-709-6449.

So, this tournament happened. We split off into four teams of two (eventually one team got a third player) and ran double round robins on EuroFest and MO.

Eurofest: Sean/Chris went 5-1 for first place.
MO: Dwight/Ian went 6-0 for first place.

We then attempted to play a modified form of quizbowl-baseball (see other thread). Team Ray Luo beat Team Dwight Wynne 4-2 in a two-inning game.

Here's the history tournament standings: http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org= ... =standings

I unfortunately didn't get to entering the main event stats yet; I think that Darwin still needs to send me his scoresheets and then I'll do it this weekend.
