Fees and registration information for the tournament is as follows:

Base fee: $90
Registration received by January 16, 2009: -$10 per team
Working buzzer system: -$10 each

Additional teams: -$5 each
(-$5 second team, -$10 third team, etc.)
Minimum fee per team: $60

Copies of the questions are also available for $15 per set. Question orders sent by March 23, 2009 will be filled the day of the tournament.

Please make checks payable to: Y. Student Academic Competitions
(Please do NOT make checks out to Yale Student Academic Competitions)

Will this be better than last year? THe only reason I ask that is that if it is not significantly changed, Gonzaga will not be attending.

To allay concerns like these, you could post last year's stats. The last post in last year's thread is a request for stats, and I wouldn't be surprised if teams care about them not being supplied.

To allay concerns you could write a decent tournament that adheres to the most basic principles of good question writing.

Byram will bring two teams, one buzzer. I know this is way early, but I'd end up forgetting to put us down and then we'd lose the early registration bonus. Might as well be on my A game.

Prediction: the number of distinct criticisms of this tournament (criticizing OMG CAREY => one) will be three times as many as HFT. Sound like a fair over/under?

Hey, have you guys considered using HSAPQ questions or mirroring other quality tournaments? I think that would not only save you guys a lot of work but make other people happy.

It does appear that Gonzaga is signed up for both tournaments. All I can say for BHSAT is that Gonzaga's coach signed up one team for BHSAT back on 1/14/09.

Again, Gonzaga is listed as going to this tournament as well as the Robinson one on the same day. Has anyone been in contact with them over which one they will attend?

As of WJIAT, Gonzaga was only planning to bring the one team to Robinson. Obviously they'll need to confirm, but I seriously doubt they are going to Yale this year.

They don't really have much of a B Team. They've only played 22 matches as of the last Byko update, and i'm pretty sure they haven't played at all since January.

Anyway, just trying to get the field updates correct here so these tournaments don't expect someone to be there who isn't going to be.

Gonzaga B wasn't there. Dan and a couple people go to tournaments all the time, but the B Team rarely attends.

I'm elated to see some schools caring whether Gonzaga would attend the Yale tournament, and I hope my clarification here would not have mattered in regard to any other school's decision to attend.... I had booked us into Yale's tournament before I became aware that Robinson in VA was having a tournament on the same day. My team became adamant that they wanted to go to Robinson's (I'm not sure out of disappointment about the quality of Yale's tournament last year, or just the travel distance vs. other plans they'd made for our spring-break week), and I do regret holding off until now to inform Aaron at Yale that I haven't been able to change their minds. I trust Yale will put on a fine tournament, and Gonzaga will at least support it by purchasing the questions.... My best wishes to the CR coach and his inspiring enthusiasm for his kids and tournaments they've attended!

The field list has now been updated accordingly.

We hope Gonzaga enjoys its time at RAQIT and thanks the team for supporting BHSAT.

Dear coaches,

I hope you are all as excited as I am for BHSAT XVIII, which will be taking place on March 28, 2009 on Yale’s campus in New Haven, CT. As mentioned before, we plan to start tournament play at 9:30 AM sharp, with tournament play taking place in both Linsley-Chittenden Hall (LC) and in William L. Harkness Hall (WLH). Registration will begin at 8:30 AM, tentatively in Linsley-Chittenden Hall (LC) 105—any changes to the exact room number will be noted in a final confirmation email to be sent out this Thursday. For driving directions and a map of the area specifying the location of LC and WLH, parking areas, and restaurant locations for lunch, please refer to the pdf sent out via email.

The tournament format will consist of preliminary round-robin of teams in separate brackets, followed by seeding of the top teams for single-elimination playoffs. There will be one championship round too. Teams will be distributed into initial brackets based on Byko's rankings and other sources to ensure that brackets are fairly balanced.

The final field for BHSAT XVII is as follows:
Cheshire High School (2)
E.O. Smith High School (3)
Half Hollow Hills HS West (2)
Housatonic Valley Regional HS (2)
Kellenberg Memorial HS (4)
Newtown High School (2)
North Babylon High School (2)
Norwich Free Academy
Sacred Heart Academy (2)
Simsbury HS (2)
Southington HS
Stuyvesant High School (2)
Suffield HS (2)
Terryville HS
Thomaston HS
The Williston Northampton School

I look forward to having you all at Yale University for the 18th rendition of BHSAT this coming weekend.

All the best,

Bulldog High School Academic Tournament XVIII (BHSAT) took place on March 28, 2009 on Yale’s campus in New Haven, CT.

After 7 preliminary rounds in which teams were separated into four different brackets, remaining teams were seeded into a 16-team single elimination playoffs bracket. In the playoffs, Kellenberg A handed Stuyvesant A its only loss of the day when it prevailed in the championship game with a score of 220-160.

Full preliminary stats are now available online at:
http://sites.google.com/site/ysacyale/b ... statistics
With the exception of the E.O. Smith A vs. Kellenberg D (Willingham bracket) game (stats page never made it out of the game room), all prelim games are included.

Full playoff results can be found here:
http://sites.google.com/site/ysacyale/b ... ff-results

Teams that pre-ordered questions will receive an electronic pdf copy of the full set in a separate email. If your school would like to order a copy for $15, please let me know at [email protected]. The BHSAT XVIII question set includes the 7 preliminary rounds and the 4 playoff rounds, as well as one packet that was not used in the tournament due to time constraints.

I have a paper to do, so this isn't going to be very long or in depth, but my team and I felt that the questions were rather poorly structured and transparent. For example, there was a tossup about Milton that mentioned Aeropagitica in the second sentence and James noticed quite a few bio questions that also had giveaway-level clues two or three sentences in. Too many of the questions left us with that "...Really?" feeling. All in all, we noticed the same issues with question structure that were present in last year's BHSAT set.
