Dunbar High School Tournament, March 7, 2009

Post by AKKOLADE »

This is a preliminary announcement for the 2009 Dunbar High School Tournament. Located in Lexington, Kentucky, the field will be split into varsity and junior varsity divisions. The question provider for the varsity division is to be announced, but the junior varsity field will be playing on NAQT's IS-82A. The base fee is currently planned to be $65 per team.

I will be happy to forward requests for more information to Susan Magedanz, the coach of the Dunbar team. Please email me at [email protected] if you should need information.

Here's some more info:

There is a flat fee of $65 per team. We will be having both varsity and junior varsity divisions. Varsity will be using NAQT IS 81; junior varsity will be using NAQT IS 82A. Students in the tenth grade or lower are the only ones eligible for the JV side of the tourney.

The tournament is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. on March 7th. We ask that everyone be present at 8:30 a.m. Teams will be broken into mini-brackets in the morning, with a minimum of six games guaranteed to each team, but more being played as scheduling allows. After the morning round robins, every team will be seeded into single-elimination playoffs in the afternoon.

This event will serve as a qualifier for both the NAQT HSNCT and PACE NSC.

If there are any questions, do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] . I or Susan Magedanz will be happy to answer your questions regarding this event.

Unless we end up with a different number of teams, we are planning a big round robin and then if the top team wins by 2 games or more, the champion is decided. If only by 1 game, they play an advantaged final against the second place team. If the two are tied, then just a normal final.

I will try to get a field update from our coach

This is shaping up to be a pretty good tournament. For our part, we'll know a whole lot more about our team after next weekend most likely.

I think it is going to be a very competitive tournament.

In the history of our team I don't we have (aside from a few isolated matches with local schools: MNH, Edmonson, Marshall, and Davies)
ever played against extremely competitive teams.

I am looking forward to exposing ourselves to a tournament of this caliber.
It will be fun to see how things turn out.

Would you guys object if we(Dunbar) have a team for teams to play in case byes become necessary? We haven't seen the set yet.

That sounds like a great idea.
The more practice the better!
Why would someone object to playing one of the greatest teams in the nation?

Would they be eligible for awards or not?

Scott from Grayson-
If any PLD teams are used for filling up bye spots, they would not be eligible to win any awards and the scores from playing those byes would not be reflected in the tournament standings. Our players are attempting to set up the type of tournament play they have enjoyed at some other schools and trying to get more playing time for everyone! Ms. M from PLD

Just so you know, we are probably using NAQT rules with few, if any, changes

Another thing, for teams not familiar with NAQT or just non-Gov Cup questions. NAQT questions are much different from Gov Cup. It is much more pyramidal. (despite its flaws) On NAQT, if a team is more experienced, that team will often be able to buzz in with the right answer before the other team have any guess at the answer. On Gov Cup, that's sometimes not the case.

Here's the stats.

I think I can figure out the points per bonus if you guys want, however, please don't expect that within days as I'll be busy for quite a while. Again sorry for not having individual stats.

We did not play out the varsity finals because there was a situation near the end that made it inconvenient. The coaches of DuPont, Madisonville, and Simon Kenton all agreed to it

I actually thought Dunbar ran a pretty good tournament. The field was competitive and the moderators were very good. The no negs thing was a plus, as I would've easily taken my team out of any contention otherwise.

I agree that it was a well run tournament. I found if exciting that there were probably 9 or 10 teams there that could have beaten any of the others during the day depending on the questions, so the majority of the games were very competitive. Overall, I liked the rules, efficiency, and flow of how things went, and think we all got a lot of fun competition. I got to say that it's the most fun tournament we've gone to all year, and Grayson County will definitely think about attending for years to come.

Anyway, I think State should be real fun and very competitive next week, and I'd like to wish good luck to all the other teams involved.
