Hey. New to this site but it looks cool. Does anyone know the district results for the Region A District? We're a bit cut off from the rest of the world so we don't get much news.

Such information, if it is on this website will probably be in the relevant regional comparison thread.

Nandua is in the Shore District of the VHSL's Region A.

King & Queen defeated West Point 200-180 to win the Tidewater
I have the results for the Northern Neck @ home.
No idea about the Tri-Rivers. The only team to advance to states from the Tri-Rivers was Windsor back in 2005.

This thread will probably be moved shortly. Anyway, as long as it's started, I'm curious as to Group AA results. That is, besides the previously posted Battlefield Disctict.

Does this mean that Nandua advanced to regionals? And I'm just as curious to find out the results from Shenandoah, James River, and Dogwood, if they are available.

Yeah, Nandua is going to Regionals once again. I'm pretty sure Rappahannock and Washington & Lee are tied for first in Northern Neck. Nobody seems to have heard from Tri-Rivers though. Do all of their schools post teams?

As far as I know, all five of the Tri-Rivers schools have teams. Windsor and Franklin have usually gone to Regionals.

River Ridge District (AA) Results
January 22nd at Cave Spring High School

Round 1
1 Blacksburg BYE
2 Cave Spring BYE
3 Salem 240 v. 6 Pulaski 160
4 Hidden Valley 145 v. 5 Christiansburg 245

Round 2
Blacksburg 270 v. Christiansburg 135
Cave Spring 300 v. Salem 135

Round 3
Christiansburg 210 v. Pulaski 160 (eliminated)
Salem 260 v. Hidden Valley 105 (eliminated)

Round 4
Blacksburg 185 v. Cave Spring 250
Salem 215 v. Christiansburg 205 (eliminated)

Round 5
Salem 260 v. Blacksburg 155 (eliminated)

Round 6
Cave Spring 325 v. Salem 130 (eliminated)

There were a lot of great matches and awesome players at the tournament today. The initial seedings for the 4th through 6th places were determined by a coin toss since those three schools were in a circle of death in the district. Some of the great matches of the day were the close win in Round 4 by Salem over Christiansburg. Salem was ahead going into the 3rd round by like 60 some odd points but negged five times to allow Christiansburg to catch up. Christiansburg almost pulled it out but just fell a little bit short.

Salem also upset Blacksburg in the loser's bracket as Carl just went on a tear and like powered several questions in the tossup rounds. It was absolutely unreal.

Anyhoo, the top three teams will advance to the Region IV tournament next Saturday at Cedar Bluff, VA: Cave Spring, Salem and Blacksburg. Thanks to those teams that tolerated the tournament being on a Thursday and hopefully, everyone had a good time.

Cave Spring 255 v. Bassett 145 (eliminated)

Round 6
Salem 205 v. Cave Spring 105 (eliminated)

Hats off to Salem! They came out gunning against us and we just looked totally lethargic. Anyway, kudos to their squad as they kept us to a record low and they are definitely someone to watch out for at States. Overall, it went smoothly, the questions were OK, but the moderators and the crazy rules were a little unnerving for moi. Anyway, Salem and Cave Spring advance to VHSL States later this year.

Results from Region D at Twin Springs High School:

Twin Springs v. Twin Valley, 190-170
Lee High v. Thomas Walker, 170-150
Lebanon bye
Honaker bye

Lebanon v. Twin Valley, 215-130
Honaker v. Lee, 240-130

Twin Valley v. Thomas Walker, 175-150 Thomas Walker Eliminated
Lee High v. Twin Springs, 210-145 Twin Springs Eliminated

Lebanon v. Honaker, 225-155
Lee High v. Twin Valley, 225-130 Twin Valley Eliminated

Honaker v. Lee High, 235-90 Lee High Eliminated

Finals:
Honaker v. Lebanon, 205-120 Honaker Stays Alive
Rematch: Honaker v. Lebanon, 190-170 Lebanon High Eliminated

Avg. Team Totals:
Twin Springs: 157.5 ppg
Twin Valley: 156.25 ppg
Lee High: 165 ppg
Thomas Walker: 150 ppg
Lebanon: 182.5 ppg
Honaker: 205 ppg

And so, Honaker and Lebanon advance to the State Tournament. That last match was hectic: it was back and forth the entire match, and the lead switched about 5 times during the final round of the night. Thankfully, I secured the defining answer of question 14, sealing the coffin for Lebanon.

Region C Tournament
Saturday January 31, 2009
Parry McCluer HS
Buena Vista, VA

Round 1
Higland Co. BYE
Auburn defeated George Wythe by Forfeit (George Wythe never showed up... we don't know why)
Radford BYE
James River defeated Patrick Henry

Round 2
Auburn defeated Highland Co. 240-105
Radford defeated James River 305-50 (I think)

Round 3
James River defeated George Wythe by Forfeit
Patrick Henry defeated Highland Co.

George Wythe (6th place) and Highland Co. (5th place) eliminated

Round 4
Auburn defeated Radford 170-160
Patrick Henry defeated James River

James River eliminated (4th place)

Round 5
Radford defeated Patrick Henry

Patrick Henry eliminated (3rd place)

Round 6
Radford defeated Auburn 190-135

Round 7
Radford defeated Auburn 275-110

Auburn eliminated (2nd Place)
Radford 1st Place

Radford and Auburn will advance to A State again. Congratulations to Radford for their umpteenth Region C championship.

I will echo Bob about the crazy rules... (mainly what I feel were the misinterpretation of rules that aren't that crazy by a tournament director that only does VHSL and has never been to any other competition... particularly regarding prompting, she thought a prompt should only be given when the packet specifically said prompt. She did not allow her quizmasters to prompt on partially correct answers). We had a warning for not being recognized on the first toss-up and -5 on the second toss-up (after the moderator stared directly at our player before reading the name tag in front of the player). There seemed to be a lot of repeats in the last few rounds with clues in earlier questions being answers in later questions. There was at least one math question with a completely wrong answer in round 7.

About crazy rules, we didn't have a problem with them in the postseason, because districts were at Clarke (who has held the tournament 4 straight years) and regionals were at Mason (where quizbowl is synonymous with success). In the past, though, we've had horrible decisions made. The most unenforced rule, in my opinion, is answering after time expires during the directed round. It irks both my coach and me. I think it should be a requirement that all officials receive some training by some process (ambiguity here on purpose) before they are permitted to officiate.

For what it's worth, as the AA and AAA results come pouring in:

James Monroe vs. Cave Spring
Charlottesville (per VHSL) vs. Spotswood
Heritage-Lynchburg vs. York
Salem vs. Western Albemarle (per VHSL)

MLWGS vs. E.C. Glass (per VHSL)
Ocean Lakes (per VHSL) vs. Robinson
TJHSST vs. Henrico
Fauquier (per VHSL) vs. Hickory (per VHSL)

Yep... TJ's "A" team was doing Model UN stuff at UPenn... the "B" team had some close calls but still came out undefeated. Pretty impressive (if not terribly surprising). Bodes well for TJ for next year I guess!

BTW, Langley's team was also mostly their "B" team— their seniors were doing the "It's Academic" TV show.

Northern Region (AAA) Patriot District tournament results TBA... I am still missing a couple of scores from their round 7. However, West Springfield went 7-0 and was the Patriot District champion, and South County was 2nd in the district.

Taken from Heritage High - Lynchburg's website:

"Congratulations to the ACE (Academic Competition for Excellence) team! They defeated Rockbridge, Allegheny and Spotswood (twice) to win the Region III championship. They go on to William & Mary on February 28th to compete in the state competition."

So Heritage won Region III and Spotswood was the runnerup, I guess.

The AA Region I Tournament was today. I don't have scores or even results for many of the matches, but the top 3 teams were:

1. James Monroe
2. York
3. Grafton

James Monroe and York will both advance to AA States. I'll try and update this as soon as I can get my hands on those scores from today. Question quality wasn't really that great for the most part; would it be possible for there to be some sort of VHSL set discussion thread at the end of the season, or are these questions being reused after that?

What I have so far (incomplete):

Round 1
James Monroe 295 Grafton 130
New Kent defeats Nottoway
King George defeats Park View
York defeats Powhatan

Round 2
James Monroe 310 New Kent 140
York defeats King George

Round 3
James Monroe 345 York 125
Grafton defeats King George

Round 4
Grafton defeats New Kent

Round 5
York defeats Grafton

Round 6
James Monroe 210 York 170

I also have a comment about the question quality. I thought, for the most part, that the questions were good, but there's been an increase in trash, which seemed to be our cause of loss in the first match against Lebanon. All that extra trash doesn't prove the better quizbowl team, it actually seems to show which team is composed of people who watch television constantly. That, and there was a ridiculous 30 second computation question involving the mode of a series of numbers.

What's the format of States this year? Since matches have been posted, I assume it's double-elim again ( ), but I figured I'd ask to be sure.

Yes, this year is double-elim again. There is a good chance that we move to round-robin at state next year (pending final approval by all of the folks that need to approve it).

I hope that gets approved. I always feel bad for teams who drive from really far away and then go home after two or three games...they have the staff and the space (and would have more staff if they realized that it takes 1-2 people to run a room, not 4-5), so I really don't understand why they wouldn't just let people play.

I brought this up privately with Shawn, but I heard that there was some confusion within VHSL over what round-robin entails and why it is better, that I hope you and other coaches can help alleviate.

Moving to a format in which everyone plays 7 games, and then the tournament ends no matter what, is not particularly better than the current double-elimination system. While it will give everyone outside of the top 2 teams a more fair ranking within the state field, and let everyone play more games, it may make the determination of the champion less fair. This is an important concern in any tournament, and in a state championship tournament it is perhaps the overriding concern. The problem is that you need to play off ties. As has been established beyond all reasonable doubt on this board, head-to-head is the most unfair tiebreaker possible and should never be used. While PPG is superior, determining the state champion on a paper tiebreaker when two or more teams have the same record is exceedingly anticlimactic and may lead to undesirable incentives (such as a contending team running up the score on the #8 team in the field after their victory is clinched, because that matters as much as their score against team #2; or, more generally, rewarding something other than the basic goal of quizbowl games, which is to win games). You must have, at a minimum, 2 additional rounds produced and scheduled in order to play off ties for the #1 spot.

It is also increasingly becoming the standard practice to do weighted best-of-three finals when someone is only 1 game ahead of the rest of the standings. I do not view this as an absolute requirement for tournament fairness, but it would be nice. Since this means the final can take up to an additional 2 games on top of a tiebreaker that may last as long as 2 games in some mathematical possibilities, changing both things will add a total of 4 rounds to the tournament.

In summary: moving to a round-robin means that you must make sure the state tournament question set has at least 9 (and preferrably 11) rounds, and that the state tournament itself is prepared to run at least 9 (and preferrably 11) rounds. It cannot be done as a turnkey change with the current 7-round setup, so make sure people are voting for the right thing when this change is proposed. A round-robin followed by tiebreakers and, if possible, weighted finals is markedly superior to the current format and should be adopted if at all possible, but a round robin that must, by rule, end after round 7 regardless of what has happened in the games is not better and may in fact be worse.
