WJIAT (2/14/09) at Bethesda, MD

Post by aestheteboy »

Walter Johnson High School would like to invite all interested teams to its third WJIAT (Walter Johnson Invitational Academic Tournament) to take place on February 14th, 2009. It will feature awesome, well-edited pyramidal questions in 20/20 format, house-written by Hunter and WJ (that means that you, unfortunately, can't go to both WJIAT and Prison Bowl).

The individual prizes and the neg prize will be something unique and possibly hand-made by myself to match the Valentine theme. That alone should be a reason to come to this tournament!

Tournament format:
5 prelim games with however many brackets of 6 (and cross-bracket games) as we need. Either one or two brackets of 6 for playoffs, depending on the final field. If we do two brackets, which is probably more likely, we'll do cross-over games for finals and placement. All teams that do not make playoffs are going to be invited for more games, either consolation round-robin or single-elimination.

Possible schedule:
8:15-9:00 - registration/rules
9:00-12:00 - rounds 1 to 5
12:00-1:00 - lunch
1:00-4:00 - rounds 6 to 10
4:00-5:00 - tie breakers and finals, as necessary

Fees:
$60 for each team
-$10 for each buzzer system
-$10 travel discount for each 100 miles
minimum fee per team: $40

If you have any questions or would like to register, please e-mail Daichi Ueda at ([email protected]).

Registered (26-27):
Gonzaga
Whitman (1-2)
GDS (2)
Shady Side
Caesar Rodney
Richard Montgomery (2)
Montgomery Blair (2)
Longfellow MS
TJ (4)
Howard
James Monroe
Wilson
Centennial
Eleanor Roosevelt
Langley
Gov
Yorktown
St. John's

It's negotiable, maybe, if you're school's name is Charter.

The date is probably not good for us. For the past couple of years the second Saturday is February has been the TV tournament date for our (mid-size schools) bracket.

Do we know when Prison Bowl will be?

Just looking at old tournament dates posted and saying that CR will attend probably either this tourney or the one held at Gonzaga a week earlier, likely. It doesn't conflict with the "Comcast" tournament Bill referenced, as we end up playing on the third weekend of the month-long shindig.

So, keep info posted.

This is a reminder that this tournament is indeed going to take place. If you guys are thinking about coming to this tournament, please feel encouraged to register soon or express your interest here.

Reasons to come to this tournament: awesome questions (and I mean it. edit: Guy means it, too), great logistics, wonderful individual prizes, generous discounts, most likely a strong field, and, above all, Kuo-Kai Chin.

Good news!
WJIAT is now PACE affiliated!

Anyways, 2/14 is coming up quickly, so please email Daichi at [email protected] to register or ask questions

even "expressing interest" is good!

A more formal invitation with a lot more detail will soon be out if some lazy people get to work.

Thanks for the e-mail, Daichi. We're going to try to go but don't mark us down for anything but "interested" yet.

One issue may/will be the time... when do you expect things to be over? Playoff format? How many matches? I'm thinking we would really need to leave no later than 4:30.

I've updated the first post with the tournament format and schedule that we have so far. We'll try our best to be done with the first 10 rounds by 4:30. We've been able to do that the last two times we ran our tournament with NAQT questions, although with Prison Bowl, it may not be so easy.

With the assumption that this tournament will be well run, I have no fear that you guys will be able to get it done before that time, which is good news in regards to CR being able to attend. I'm fairly confident that we will be able to go now, its just pending some final commitments from the other A team members, and the continued permission of certain individuals who may have expectations for certain other individuals on Valentines Day.

Just in case you didn't get my e-mail (can never be too safe), we'll definitely be bringing at least one team, possibly two. So officially mark us down for one team but make sure a slot is open for a second, if they choose to come.

We can bring one buzzer set as well. And myself as a reader, since i would love to moderate.

Daichi, i can confirm that we can only unfortunately bring one team with us, and even that one will have one or two replacements. But CR A will be there with our two best players and we'll try our best.

So, as it appears Quint will not be playing for Gov this weekend, is the opportunity available for a reincarnation of "Quint and Cameron A"?? I will note that this is hardly a "superteam" by any definition, so the question is really will small "open" teams be permitted. If the answer is yes, I can also provide a staffer (efficient in scorekeeping, fine but less experienced at reading) in the form of my mother (alas, no license). Let me know and I will attempt to convince him.

Will this be certified as a "platinum" qualification tournament by PACE in all likelihood (as was Prison Bowl II) since it's using the same question set as they were? I guess that won't be determined until after it's finished, but i was just curious.

Also, will tournament stats be compiled by Taft? Or some other (likely inferior) system?

Here's the thing: you are a very good high school player, and so is Quint. I would probably rank a team of you two somewhere around 5th at this tournament. I don't think it would be fair for us to let an open team fill a potential playoff spot, so we can't have Quint and Cameron A as an official team. However, you should still plan to come anyway . . . read for us, play on a scab team if we end up needing one, play on Q&C as an exhibition team (i.e. not eligible for the top playoff bracket; we won't ask you to pay, of course), coach Gov, or just fool around in the stat room. It should be fun.

We'll use SQBS.

While I enjoy the randomly high placement when we would have to play well to be top 8, I have received Quint's approval to do this exhibition option. We will be there. Thank you, Daichi.

There were 5 playoff rounds (round robin) for two brackets, and a 6th game for placement followed.

We will have full results soon, but we got kicked out of the school by 6 because....we only had the place for that long.

I'll try to make sure they're up tonight

And yea, probably on quizbowlpackets.com in a day or two

Brief Results: Congratulations to Gov for winning our tournament and TJ A for taking second place 2nd. Gonzaga played James Monroe for third place (I'm not sure who won), and GDS A beat Whitman A for 5th place. I think TJ B and Shady Side played for 7th.

Again, more complete and um certain results will come

I expect to have the full stats up tonight.

Thanks for coming today, and I hope you all enjoyed the tournament. Please refrain from discussing the questions just yet since I believe there is a mirror. Please feel free to post any comments or criticisms about the tournament itself though.

This was a great question set and rather well-run tournament. Just a couple comments on the posted prelim stats: Quint and I played as "Cameron" and "Quint", respectively and I enjoy how Tommy and Greg did so well while hearing no TUs in their round against Richard Montgomery, though I'm afraid that's impossible. Again, good times, and hopefully the first of many more episodes in the chronicles of (returned) Quint Carr.

sorry about the 0 toss-ups heard thing that is in so many places in our stats. I was under the impression that it would be automatically set to 20 due to a very wise overseer of mine. Apparently he was wrong.

Whoa sorry about bailing, we were too tired to care about placement.

I have to get going in a minute but i just wanted to make a quick comment that we really enjoyed coming to this, the questions were generally very well-written (albeit with some too-long bonus clues), and i loved reading like always.

We did pretty decent it seemed (13th before consolations or something?) so i'm happy with that.

I'll take a longer look at things tomorrow. Just wanted to thank Daichi and Co. for a nice day.

Yeah, these guys did well. I am wondering why they were not the team to be bumped up to the top playoffs when our team was removed as they probably would have fit better among the 9-11 teams than the 14-16 ones.

Thanks to WJ for an awesome tournament. Congrats to Gov for an impressive performance, including some great bonus conversion. I was also rather impressed by Chuhern and James Monroe; it's great to see schools that weren't part of the quizbowl circuit before really step it up and be major players. It was also great to play teams like Caesar Rodney and Shady Side who we haven't really ever played before (at least not with our full A team). Hunter, we're still waiting...

I should note for anyone who is interested in the results of this tournament that our literature/miscellaneous East Asian stuff player Josh Hahm left early, leaving us (TJ A) with only 3 players for the 10th round vs. James Monroe and our final vs. Gov. It was a little taxing to play short one player while sick, but that said, the tournament was definitely worth it. The questions overall were good. There were some issues that I noticed in terms of the order of bonus parts, the difficulty of bonuses in the playoffs, and some repetition, but that said, I liked most of the set.

Yeah, I'd like to echo Naren in saying that this was a great tournament. It was efficiently run and the questions were for the most part, fantastic; the readers were good, too. Congrats to Gov and TJ on their excellent performances today, and to WJ and Hunter for producing such a high quality set.

I as well would like to say this was an excellent tournament, and, even though I came today sick with a fever, that I genuinely enjoyed participating in it. The questions, as a whole, were excellent (regardless of the fact that I did worse today than I have done all this year). EVERY moderator we had was great, I don’t have a single major complaint about any of the moderators we had. Also, of course, Daichi and the rest of WJ did a great job in running this tournament, so thank you Daichi and crew for a great tournament!

I would also like to thank Cameron for his compliments; they are greatly appreciated, especially from such a good player. Cameron, you and Quint were very impressive, and, even though I agree it was fair that you did not play in the playoffs, it is unfortunate that you were unable to do so and see how well you guys would do against the other truly good players there today. I would also like to say that it too enjoyed playing Naren and the rest of TJ A today, as well as Shady Side, for the first time. Both teams were great fun to play against, and those matches were truly enjoyable, and I truly hope we will get to play you guys again (though I next time hope the scores will be a bit closer).
