ANNOUNCEMENT: UIUC High School Solo
ANNOUNCEMENT: UIUC High School Solo
This is a preliminary announcement for the 4th annual UIUC High School Solo. This year, due to scheduling issues, the tournament will once again be paired with the NAQT State Championship, which this year will be at Fenton High School. I will still be acting as the Tournament Director, and will be writing most of the questions as usual with assistance from fellow members of the Academic Buzzer Team.
The format is the same: 20 pyramidal tossups, no bonuses, no powers, negs are in play. Tiebreakers are sudden death, first score change decides it. Standard mACF rules for recognition/timing: you're recognized when your buzzer goes off, 5 seconds after you buzz in to answer, 5 seconds after the tossup ends and it's dead. Protest should be noted after a tossup, and must be lodged by the end of the match. Any protests that are brought to my attention will be resolved as promptly as possible.
The distribution is different this time: there will be no computational math. There may be math included in the Science distribution, but it will be theoretical.
Rounds will follow this distribution, and each category within a round will be diversified:
4 Literature
4 History
4 Science
2 Fine Arts
1 Religion
1 Mythology
1 Philosophy
1 Geography
1 Social Science
1 Trash
Structure: Bracketed round robin, rebracket, finals if necessary. Exact structure TBD, dependent on field size.
Fees: Teams are encouraged to register multiple players from the same school, and are offered financial incentives to do so. Please make checks payable to Academic Buzzer Team. If unable to pay before or at the tournament, please email me so arrangements can be made.
First player from a school: $30
Second player from the same school: $20
Subsequent players from same school: $10
Buzzers: -$5 per school. Only two working lights needed. These will undoubtedly be needed.
Moderators: -$10 per school. If coaches/parents are willing, please let me know. I will not know how many I need until the structure is determined.
Also: please please please email me ahead of time if you want to play. I'd like a good-sized field again, but no prior notice creates nightmares (I'm looking at you, PORTA.)
Awards in the form of trophies and/or books will be given to the top individuals, top non-seniors, and the person who negs the most.
Previous sets are available for perusal on various archives.
If you would like to register, or have any other questions, email me at [email protected]. I respond to emails within 12-24 hours, usually quicker.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: UIUC High School Solo
I knew I forgot something.
Yes, the date is 3/7, and it will start shortly after the main tournament is done.
Also: if people wish to moderate, please inform me as to whether you would to read off of paper or your laptop. I will bring ample copies both on paper and on USB drives (I can guarantee that they will be free of viruses, if you're worried about that.)

Also:
If you can't make it to Fenton HS, but still want to play, people have expressed interest in mirroring it. If you're interested in doing so, just send me an email.
EDIT: I suck at geography

I'm sorry I haven't responded to this, Chris. I was thinking about going, but I've since learned that my family will be going to Mexico for spring break.cdcarter wrote:Sam, if you are driving down for this, I would be mildly interested in going too.sam.peterson wrote:When is this?

I'm playing.
Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: UIUC High School Solo
Field updated above. Chris, are you for sure coming?
Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: UIUC High School Solo
Bumping this one more time. I'd like to reach 24 players, to where everyone gets lots of games without byes, and I'm 3-5 short. If you want in, shoot me an email.
Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: UIUC High School Solo
I'm in the process of bribing Ben to sign up. And if he does, some other NT players (if they exist) likely would since they have to stick around anyway, or so I hope.

I emailed Dave about it, and he told me that no one from NT wanted in.jonah wrote:I'm in the process of bribing Ben to sign up. And if he does, some other NT players (if they exist) likely would since they have to stick around anyway, or so I hope.

We'll have final numbers after practice on Thursday.

Ben needs careful handling. I think this bribe is going to work out.dtaylor4 wrote:I emailed Dave about it, and he told me that no one from NT wanted in.jonah wrote:I'm in the process of bribing Ben to sign up. UPDATE:
At this point, I'm going to cap the field at 24 teams based on the number of readers. The schedule will be four groups of six, then four more groups of six, then ACF finals (if necessary). Ties will be broken on paper.
As usual, email me with any questions, and I will do my best to respond promptly.

Also:
After the tournament, please refrain from publicly discussing questions/answers. Some of the questions used at this tournament will be used at BATE and its mirrors, one of which is taking place on March 21st.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: UIUC High School Solo
Forget what I said earlier about the bracketing.
4 groups of six, then 4 groups of six. The non-bracket winners that make it through will be decided based on PPG. Records will carry over from the prelims. ACF final if necessary.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: UIUC High School Solo
Brief Results:
Siva Sundaram from Auburn cleared the field, going 10-0. Ben Cohen from New Trier got second at 8-2. Full stats will be posted once my apartment has internet again.
I would like to thank Michael Angelo Sorice, James Sanner, Trygve Meade, Jonah Greenthal, and Aaron Cohen & co. for contributing questions.
I would also like to thank the numerous readers who kept this tournament going. Without you, there is no tournament.
There are schools with whom I was unable to receive payment from. I will email you soon about making arrangements.
Also, and I cannot stress this enough: Do not discuss any question specifics. There is a BATE mirror in two weeks. After this mirror has been concluded, I will send Christian Carter the set for him to post.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: UIUC High School Solo
Were the questions used at this event identical to the ones used at BATE? If not, will the unique ones be posted sometime soon?

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: UIUC High School Solo
There was some overlap in certain categories. But all the mirrors of BATE are done so questions can be posted and discussion of any sort on the board can begin
