MUT: March 7 on the U of M West Bank

Post by theMoMA »

Minnesota will be hosting MUT sometime in March. We're soliciting mirrors in every region. Teams that have already contacted us about mirroring will have priority if they indeed submit a bid. Because March is the time of Spring Breaks, it's likely that mirrors will take place on different weekends. We also will consider bids for sites who want to run a separate tournament on Fake ICT weekend, either a DII field, or a Sunday event.

We're going to shake up packet sub this year; any team attending any mirror may submit a packet, but is not required to do so. For now, it appears that we will not require teams attending the Minnesota site to submit a packet, but they are strongly encouraged to write one.

The packet-writing schedule will be posted when we figure out when various mirrors will be held. The first deadline will definitely be February 1, though. If you have a packet by then, you will receive $50 off your fee.

Stay tuned for more info, and please email me at [email protected] if you want to host a mirror sometime in March.

Packet-writing

Packets are optional at all sites. Anyone submitting a packet by February 14 will get $30 off. Anyone submitting a packet by February 28 will get $10 off. Half-packets are also acceptable; simply halve the discounts from before to get your discount. The Minnesota team will be writing the rest of the packets.

Costs and other discounts

Base fee: $120
Buzzer: -$5
Moderator: -$15
Travel: -$10 if over 200 miles by Google maps

Mirrors

We are partnering with Hampshire College in the northeast, UCLA in the west, and Tulsa in the lower midwest/plains for this tournament. We are actively seeking mirrors in other regions, specifically the mid-Atlantic and the southeast. Something in the Illinois area might work too, if teams from there are unwilling to travel to Minnesota. The cost to mirror is $30 per non-house team.

If UW doesn't end up hosting ACF Winter (and maybe even if it does) we'd probably be up for mirroring this tournament.

Hey, due to all of the open weekends in the area falling on our spring break, VCU will not be able to mirror MUT in the Mid-Atlantic in 2009 as we did in 2008. I encourage anyone around here who is looking to get into tournament hosting to contact Andrew about doing this event, as it was a great set last time and serves a valuable role as a well-written and controlled-difficulty tournament for undergrads only.

Also please note: we are attempting to get the building for March 7 for the Minnesota site. The only reason I haven't announced the date for sure is because our room reservations are being held for some reason.

Any update? If this will indeed be on for March 7, Carleton will surely attend, probably with multiple teams. No other weekend in March would be possible for us as a team, due to winter term exams and spring break. (A tournament during our spring break could still possibly draw some of our staying-in-the-area players on their own.)

Lawrence won't be there if it's in March - we have all the problems that Carleton has, plus half of our team is in Oklahoma City March 4-8.

Has anybody in the Northeast expressed interest in attending a mirror/hosting a mirror of MUT?

Despite being on spring break, a couple of our players are from the Minnesota area, so Notre Dame will have a team at MUT.

Please note the above changes in packet-writing information.

Also, we are seeking hosts to mirror this in the mid-Atlantic and southeast, so if you'd like to host, please let me know at [email protected].

Not that I'm going to be playing in any of the mirrors or anything, but is this tournament using the official ACF distribution or the modified form used for MUT last year?

I just wanted to let everyone know (especially teams in the Southwest/Lower Midwest) that Oklahoma will be hosting this mirror instead of Tulsa. Also, it will be held on Sunday March 8th, due to NAQT Oklahoma State being held on Saturday March 7th in Stillwater.

Hopefully, the guys at OU will post an announcement soon. Last year's set was enjoyable, so I hope that the Southwest can again experience a fantastic mACF set.

Thanks.

We have recently reached mirror agreements with Maryland in the mid-Atlantic and Louisiana-Lafayette in the Southeast. We're still open to having mirrors somewhere in the Ohio/Illinois area, in Florida, or in the Pacific Northwest. Please contact us if you'd like to mirror MUT in one of these regions.

And nevermind about a bye-less round robin. Three teams playing at our site (EPHS, Carleton, Iowa) were kind enough to write packets, so we will have to have a bye. There will be a Minnesota house team if Wisconsin brings two teams.

QUICK RESULTS: Trevor Davis goes undefeated in the prelims and defeats Carleton B in the second game of an advantaged final. Stats to follow soon.

EDIT: Final stats are at the same link as before; namely, http://www.tc.umn.edu/~kand0028/quiz_bo ... dings.html. Fifteen minutes after the tournament, fools!

I think the final score of the second final is wrong. Trevor had a score ending in 5 and needed to get one bonus part to beat us, so I think the final score was something like 280-305 (although I'm basing this only off of recollection and not a stat sheet. I'll ask Frank about it if need be).
