2008-09 Mid-Season Poll!

Post by AKKOLADE »

The best poll related tradition that is applied exclusively to high school teams on the forums!

E-mail me your ballots at [email protected] . List your top 25 in order. First place team gets 25 points, second 24, on down to your 25th team, which will receive 1 point. The team with the most aggregate points will be #1, and so forth.
Please make sure your email subject contains the phrase "hsquizbowl Top 25" or else I will be moderately annoyed.

I am going to be away from the forums for the most part through 1/2/09, so I'll say ballots must be in by 1/5/09. I will post the results shortly afterward, along with each voter's ballot.

Oh, and results will be posted on the upcoming hsquizbowl.org blog :yay:

I'm back on the Internet (yay), albeit at a Wendy's, so I'll post a last chance reminder for ballots. Last time I checked, I had seven; I'm looking forward to a few more I hope!

Sent. I really feel like i must have been missing a couple teams... i looked back at old tournaments this year just to check but i dunno. With Byko's rankings seemingly broken at the moment, it was tough to get a fair gauge.

My top 8 would be exactly equivalent to Dan's except for a switch between Gov and SC.

Stow Monroe? Is that where Ike Jose (?) goes to school? If so, then i can understand why Dan put them up so high. The two of them always went head to head at ACE Mt. St. Mary's this summer, and Ike always did very well against Dan.

I would also agree with swapping us and SC. I was going to post saying that two slot was nice to see but probably far too kind, but Cameron has beaten me to it... We've only faced SC once, but I was pretty impressed by them. Three is probably still too high for us, since we lose to Walter Johnson fairly consistently so far this season, but I've generally found this season too close to call (thus I did not submit a poll). All the teams in Dan's top 8 or 10 have a pretty good shot at beating each other on any given day, IMO.

And, yes, Trey, that is Ike's school.

Is there an explanation why Stow-Munroe Falls has losses to Shady Side, Solon, Fisher Catholic, and Walnut Hills in Byko's ratings? I would expect them to beat those teams.

Three of those losses were on an A set. As for the other one, upsets do happen every once in a while.

I'm just Ike-kryponite. Also, Solon and Walnut Hills are probably the two best non-Ike Ohio teams, not that that really means anything. Our game against them in October went right down to the line. I suppose I would attribute our victory to some downright odd bonus distribution. We got some easy thirties and they ended up with some hard tens. Even with those losses for Ike et al, do not underestimate them. Ike is a very strong player. I don't think this needs to be said again, but don't put too much weight into very early season results, especially on sets of dubious and variable quality.

NAQT's website says that Ike did not play at Ohio State, where they lost to Solon, Fisher Catholic, and Walnut Hills

My top few would probably be something like:

1. Charter
2. State College
3. Gov
4. GDS
5. TJ
6. WJ

Charter and SC are almost definitely 1 and 2. Gov has proven itself to be very good, being able to beat basically every team in the field. GDS is also a very good team, though it has its up and down days it seems. Same applies to TJ, though a bit to a lesser extent (we always seem to lose by 20 to Gov, we've won and lost to GDS, yet on the other hand we've lost games we shouldn't have). Meanwhile, WJ can be beast at times (getting 17 TUs in a game at MOHIT) and always seems to be a challenge to the top teams.

Basically we have a negging problem, but when we haven't negged we've beat Dorman and Gonzaga by pretty large margins. I would rank WJ above us, though.

EDIT: We've also never played Hunter. I'd like to do that sooner rather than later.

Something about TJ-- I expect TJ to perform significantly better at NAQT than at PACE. This is because they have much skill in NAQT pet categories: Naren is a monster on Geography and CE, and Harry White is amazing at mathcomp.

This. Along those lines, I believe Dan's list is as close to anything I could come up with for NSC, but NAQT would change the order for many of these teams, likely including a demotion for Maggie Walker (while Greg never seems to lose a beat in a format change, Sarah and Tommy consistently play better on PACE format, especially with bouncebacks). Similar changes must be taken into account for other teams I imagine.

Yeah, I wasn't playing at any of the A-sets, as I was taking an SAT that day.

For what its worth, the only member of that squad on the actual A team was Maia, (freshman!) but Rob might be thrusted into the A-team later in the season.

The results at our tournaments haven't really been shown yet, so it may seem that we don't play a lot, but we have. We have lost to DCC at the finals three times this year at our three tournaments that we attended, so we got 2nd at all three tournaments.

Here are my results that I have:

1. Charter
2. State College
3. Governor's
4. Walter Johnson
5. Thomas Jefferson
6. Hunter
7. Georgetown Day School
