ACF Winter Mid-Atlantic @ JS Reynolds CC (Richmond) 1/17/09

Post by The Goffman Prophecies »

The Mid-Atlantic site for ACF Winter 2009 will be held at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond, VA on Saturday, January 17. (Note: Due to an extremely unresponsive student life office, I do not have confirmed room reservations at this time.)

To register, e-mail me at [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers you want to bring, and an email address where you can be contacted with details.

PACKETS/PRICES: The ACF guidelines on packet submission apply--teams with players in their third or greater year of mainstream quizbowl must write packets in order to participate. Submit all packets to Jerry Vinokurov, based on the main ACF Winter post located here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=6634

Base fee: $120
Buzzers: -$5
Staffers: -$10
Laptop: -$5
Travel: -$10 for every 200 miles traveled (one-way)
New to ACF: -$25
New to quizbowl: -$75
High Schools: -$50
In addition to any packet discounts/penalties

LOCATION/DIRECTIONS: The tournament will take place on our Parham Road Campus. We will most likely be meeting in the Lippman Auditorium, in the Massey Technology Center. Directions and information about getting to campus can be found at http://www.reynolds.edu/_locations/parham.htm

TIMES: Registration will run from 8:15 to 8:45, with the goal of starting Round 1 as soon as possible after 9.

FORMAT: Each team will play at least 12 games, and the tournament will end with ACF-format finals. The specific format will be determined once the field size is known. Games will be played under the official ACF rules. The highest-finishing all-undergraduate and all-Division II teams will receive recognition according to the ACF policy on eligibility for Undergraduate and Division II status.

PAYMENT: Financial arrangements will be handled by me. All teams must pay on Saturday morning, in one of two forms: cash, or a personal or institutional check made out to JSRCC. Unless you have made a specific arrangement with me, you must pay your full registration fee at or before the tournament. If you need an invoice ahead of time so that your sponsor can cut a check, let me know. Otherwise, all teams will receive invoices at the tournament.

Post here or mail me if you have any further questions about the tournament itself.
--Dan Goff, tournament director, ACF Fall Mid-Atlantic

As far as I know, it's happening. Would be nice if we had more than one team registered - I'll count you as number two. Not having ACF Winter in the Mid-Atlantic would be a travesty.

Maggie Walker's bringing a team to this if we can get 4 other people together to go to Districts, which looks likely right now.

So yeah, I will be playing solo (with 1-2 Cosby players if they are willing to play as "learning experience").
$70 is pushing it for me, but I think I can manage, so count me in.

Hey, Dan: would you have an objection to Cameron Orth playing with MLWGS? Our fourth player is unable to attend, and he's still seeking a team.

I don't object, but since Cameron isn't enrolled at MLW anymore, it would make your team ineligible for any titles.

I realize this is a little gray, but here's how I'm reading this. Since you were not officially enrolled anywhere until you were enrolled as homeschooled/Cosby, and did not attend any classes at Maggie Walker during the mandatory period, I don't think that makes you eligible to compete as a Maggie Walker student this year. I welcome input from Jerry or anyone else at ACF that may disagree or read this differently.

The logistics don't work out well for Penn to bring a team, but I'll be at home for other reasons, so I'm available to either play solo or, since I risk going winless solo, offer myself up as a free agent. I'd rather not play solo, but I don't mind for the sake of the schedule.

I didn't see them in the list; I'm assuming you confused them with Walter Johnson HS, who is indeed attending.

I've heard through the grapevine that they are not coming, so I'm counting them as dropped unless they specifically email me and tell me otherwise, as I have a document that they need to bring with them in order to be able to make my school's lawyers happy and be able to play.

Minor problem - TJ may end up not going if I can't find a 3rd person to come along.
That wouldn't be too cool considering that the tournament is in two days, and the schedule would be made less than pleasant (particularly if the reason is just that you want to have a bigger team).

The problem for us with the team being too small is that the finance office people won't cut the check. So we've basically got our hands tied. In addition to that, I'm pretty sure the parent who is supposed to be our sponsor (because our sponsor doesn't come to these tournaments) can't make it. Ah, the joys of high school bureaucracy.

Naren, is there a possibility of you guys coming and working out the fees at some later date somehow? Obviously I can't and wouldn't tell Dan and George to let you play for free, but if your absence is going to throw the tournament into chaos, perhaps something can be arranged that will allow you to play? It's a weekend and not on school time, so if you showed up as Naren + pal, who would care?

Additionally, if you were playing as "Naren + pal", I think you'd qualify for both the high school and shorthanded discounts, which means you'd be paying ~$10 to play, so long as you can get down here.

I REALLY don't mean to throw the tournament into chaos, but there is absolutely no way we can come tomorrow. Without the adult, if we go, we essentially get royally screwed over by the school (even as "notteejay"). We played at VCU Novice over the summer, but that was with an FCPS-badged adult, and we still got some flak for it...

I have not been in the college section in a while, so I just want to apologize about not being able to come. I had no idea that A) we would not be able to get transportation and B) that I would need to spend the amount of time studying for my math final that I evidently need to study.

Basically I feel absolutely terrible about doing this to you guys - it is NOT my intent at all. If you want to know how ridiculous the situation is, we got yelled at for not having sent a list of names to the Activities Office for VHSL yesterday when we were notified today. Apparently TJ wants us to be psychics...

I've already expressed similar sentiments in the Missouri thread few months ago, but seriously, what right does the school system have to tell anyone what he or she can and cannot do in their free time? What can they do to you for going to Richmond and spending time with your friends? I understand that if the team fund is involved, then the school has some say in how you use it, but I assume that $10 is not an issue here. I'm not trying to criticize Naren, but I really can't understand what's going on here.

Georgetown overslept and was replaced by a hastily-acquired scab team.

Hey look: stats!

Maryland was first after the prelims, going 9-0. VCU followed at 7-2. We're into the playoffs now.
