ACF Winter North @ Carleton College (1/18/09)
Carleton College is pleased to announce that it will host the ACF Winter North tournament in Northfield, Minnesota on January 18th, 2009. **Please note that due to the scheduling of a very large high school tournament in our area on Saturday January 17, for which lots and lots of moderators and buzzers are needed, ACF Winter North will take place on SUNDAY the 18th, a day after most of the other ACF Winter events.**
This is a packet-submission event and the difficulty is advertised as being similar to that of a regular-season event; harder than ACF Fall, but similar to the 07 and 08 iterations of Penn Bowl. For the full announcement of ACF Winter, please see viewtopic.php?f=8&t=6634
PACKET REQUIREMENT (quoted from the ACF website): "Any team with at least one person on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament prior to September 1, 2007 is required to submit a packet in order to participate in an ACF tournament in 2008-2009. All ACF tournaments, NAQT Division I or Division II SCT, NAQT ICT, and typical academic invitationals count as regular collegiate academic tournaments for this purpose, but trash or "hybrid" tournaments, College Bowl/HCASC, and tournaments played on NAQT "invitational series" questions do not. This test is applied to each individual team, not to your school's contingent as a whole."
Note: The no-penalty deadline for required packets is Dec. 13th, so we highly recommend teams begin getting together a packet if they are required to submit.
FEES (per ACF):
Base fee: $120
Buzzer systems: -$5 each
Staffers: -$10 each
Laptop: -$5 each (max 1 per team)
Travel: -$10 for every 200 miles traveled
International: -$20
Teams new to ACF: -$25
Teams new to quizbowl: -$75
High school teams: -$50
LOCATION/TIME: Unless altered by a subsequent announcement and email to registered teams, teams should expect to gather in the large auditorium of Olin Hall (Olin 149) for registration from 8:45 to 9:15, with play expected to begin as close as possible to 9:30.
LODGING: Teams needing to stay overnight may wish to reserve lodging at one of the following Northfield motels:
Country Inn Motel: (507) 645-2286 or (800) 456-4000 (closest to Carleton - not that anything's far in Northfield)
Super 8 Motel: (507) 663-0371 or (800) 800-8000
AmericInn: (507) 645-7761 or (800) 634-3444
College City Motel: (507) 645-4426 or (800) 775-0455
CONTACT: If you have any other questions or would like to register for this tournament, please send email to ehillema at carleton dot edu. Please be advised that I will be out of the country with at best occasional email access between Dec. 27 and Jan. 5; if your question during that time requires a prompt reply, send email also to ryang at carleton dot edu.

Okay, so that's an eight-team field with three teams (Iowa, Lawrence and Minnesota) having submitted. Will we be doing a full RR followed by the...
Partial Submission Round Robin (8 rounds, 4 rooms, 7 g.p.t.)
Rd. Room 1 Room 2 Room 3 Room 4 Bye
1 1-8 2-7 3-6 4-5 ---
2 7-8 1-6 2-5 3-4 ---
3 6-7 5-8 1-4 2-3 ---
4 5-6 4-7 3-8 1-2 ---
5 3-5 2-6 1-7 --- 4,8
6 2-4 1-5 6-8 --- 3,7
7 1-3 4-8 5-7 --- 2,6
8 2-8 3-7 4-6 --- 1,5
...that Seth mentioned in another thread, or will the format be something else?

Or, based on the fact that there are 14 blind packets:
8-team RR
4/4 rebracket (submissions may be used to play off, depending on teams involved)
2 for finals.
This uses the 14 blind packets, and gets you more quizbowl.

Your schedule is 15 packets long - 13 plus two for finals. That means it gets each team 13 guaranteed rounds instead of the 14 that I proposed - less quizbowl. But if Carleton doesn't decide which packets are the finals packets until the finals actually happen, your way would work, too.dtaylor4 wrote: This uses the 14 blind packets, and gets you more quizbowl.
But why run a schedule that guarantees one fewer round while leaving one more packets unused? Are byes that awful?

The format for our 8-team tournament with 3 teams having submitted packets will indeed be full round robin (7 rounds), followed by partial submission round robin (8 rounds, 7 games per team), with 2 packets remaining for finals as needed.

Eeee. That IS late! Within the last hour I finished drawing up our match schedule for eight teams, printed it, etc. But yes, Sam, since it doesn't add to the number of readers I lined up, you and Michael can still get in; I'll make a new schedule for nine teams. Full RR, followed by a 5/4 break, I guess. See you Sunday.

What I meant by a 5/4 break was breaking after the initial full round robin into an upper bracket of 5 and a lower bracket of 4 for secondary round robins. So yes, 5 more rounds (4 more games per team and a bye) for the top 5; 3 more rounds (no byes) for the bottom 4. 14 rounds read, with 2 more packets reserved for finals, and 1 for any tiebreaks to play-in to the upper bracket.

Okay, I completely understood what you meant, then. I was surprised by the two-game disparity, but I guess the lesson is to finish in the top 5.CarletonQB wrote:What I meant by a 5/4 break was breaking after the initial full round robin into an upper bracket of 5 and a lower bracket of 4 for secondary round robins. I don't have the stats sheets, but I'll try to figure out what's up with the missing game. As for the "final", Iowa and Minnesota agreed to simply have their last game be the final instead of playing and then having an advantaged final. Minnesota won, which should be in the playoff stats.

Re: ACF Winter North @ Carleton College (1/18/09)
Final overall standings:
1. Minnesota A (11-1)
2. Iowa (10-2)
3. Carleton A (7-5)
4. tie Peterson/Wright (6-6)
4. tie Lawrence (6-6)
6. Minnesota B (5-6)
7. tie Carleton C (3-8)
7. tie Eden Prairie High School (3-8)
9. Carleton B (2-9)
The second meeting between Minnesota and Iowa, in the final scheduled playoff round, with both teams then having a 10-1 record, became by mutual agreement the deciding "finals" match; Minnesota won that game 410-155. Minnesota's earlier loss was to Iowa; Iowa's earlier loss was to Lawrence.
Congratulations to Andrew, Brendan, Gautam and Rob for an impressive win of both the overall and undergraduate titles, and to Paul and Quentin for their strong second. And special thanks to the moderators besides myself -- Emily Pike, Mike Olson, Samantha Ross -- and statistician -- Emily Kawaler -- who gave us their entire Sunday to help the tournament play out smoothly.

Iowa 200, Lawrence 215OctagonJoe wrote:I don't have the stats sheets, but I'll try to figure out what's up with the missing game.
Iowa: Paul 8 2, Quentin 1 0, either Paul or Quentin 0 1 (the Queen Mary tossup)
Lawrence: Greg 5 0, Michael 2 0, Emily 1 1, James 0 0
Bonuses: Iowa 9 125 13.89, Lawrence 8 140 17.50
Technically, Lawrence was D2, too.
Also, would a combined prelims-playoffs file be possible?

If those stats aren't going to be disputed, I can enter them in. I was planning on combining the playoffs and prelims once I had those stats available as per another's request.

Actually, I counted again and I was 6 0, so it should read "Greg 6 0" and "Lawrence 9 130 14.44". Also, I'mOctagonJoe wrote:If those stats aren't going to be disputed, I can enter them in. But yeah, I'm pretty sure of those stats, just I don't have a definite answer on who got what for Iowa. However, I'm pretty sure that Quentin did, in fact, get the Van Allen belts question, so that means that Iowa is Paul 7 2, Quentin 2 0, plus the Elizabeth for Mary neg that I think was Paul's. But Iowa certainly totals 9 3.
Definitely Paul: neg on Snow Country, neg on 15th Amendment, Aurangzeb, Burial of Count Orgaz, Idea of Order at Key West, Pistons-Pacers, Zimbardo, Upanishads, Far from the Madding Crowd.
Definitely Quentin: Hall effect
Not sure: Van Allen belts, neg on Mary I
Lawrence is me 6 0, Em 1 1, and Michael 2 0 for sure, and two tossups (the first two, actually) definitely went dead.

Alright the combined stats are up, and hopefully everything looks good.

Yep, except that Peterson/Wright against Lawrence, episode 1, is still listed as round 0 and not round 3.OctagonJoe wrote:Alright the combined stats are up, and hopefully everything looks good.

Wow - against Carleton A the second time, Minnesota A got fourteen tossups and negged the other six - twenty buzzes against a quality team.

If I neg 18 tossups against Brown and get 2 tossups, that means I've made 20 buzzes against a quality team too.

I'm aware of that. It makes a difference that 14 of them were right. I'm mostly commenting on "Wow, aggressive" and not "Wow, amazing," though.

Fixed that round error so round reports would have a more complete meaning. I think the prelims and the new combined stats should be good now. The playoff stats have some errors, but I think you can figure out what you need from the combined stats.
