Prison Bowl II (1/31/09)

Post by Sir Thopas »

Hunter College High School would like to invite teams to its second annual Prison Bowl (named after its locale, affectionately known as "the Brick Prison") on January 31st, 2009. The questions will be standard mACF (pyramidal tossups, 3-part bonuses, 20/20 fomat) written by us and Walter Johnson. The distribution is still being tweaked, but will look more or less like an ACF packet—lots of academic questions balanced evenly, light on pop culture, no computational math. The format will probably be some form of bracketed round robin with an advantaged final (and consolation matches for all interested); it will not be single elimination. We plan on running a paperless tournament, possibly including scoresheets as well.

We are striving to have the tournament run more smoothly than last year—through my mishaps and generally learning more about how to do it, I know how to avoid many of the problems that were encountered. As we get closer and know how many good readers we have, we will put an acceptable cap on the number of teams. The prizes will be books, and possibly some trophies as well for the top few teams.

Fees:
$60 for the first team from a school
$50 for each additional team from a school
-$10 for each buzzer system
minimum fee per team: $40; travel (or other) discounts can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis

To register, or if you have any questions or would like to volunteer as a moderator, please email me at metsfan((SPAMBLOCK))[email protected].

We are also looking for various sites across the nation to mirror the set around the same time. If you are interested in your institution mirroring this, email me as well.

Thanks,
--Guy Tabachnick, captain/tournament director

Bloomfield will definitely be attending, possibly with two teams although our B team would most likely just be a feeder team for other teams to get wins off of.

Loved the questions last year, I'll be lobbying very hard with Ben/Mrs. Gittings to go to this tournament.

Guy,

This is Michael Zinsmeister from Seton Hall Prep. I would love to bring at least one team to compete. I would also like to offer my services in staffing the event. (We ran the SHP and NY State tournaments last year.) Let me know If I/my staff can be of any service.

OK, we've officially changed the date to February 21st. If this doesn't work for anyone, I apologize; if it's not a problem, can those who posted in the thread email me please?

And Mr. Zinsmeister, we'd love to have you moderate; I'm not sure how many extra moderators we'll need, so I didn't put a moderator discount, but one can definitely be arranged (that goes for everyone).

We'll try to send around four or five teams, but it's contingent on us getting funding from the Stuy Alumni Association.

Whoops, so yeah, we've changed the date again. I apologize profusely for all the problems we've had getting a date. Anyway this is absolutely final. If it doesn't happen on this date it won't at all and I'll go off myself or something.

Charter is interested. Exactly how many teams will depend on my post-break discussions with team members and administration.

The official field is currently empty. If you would like to be the first to register, email me! Note the teams that have expressed interest in this thread, though; that is the field.

The school is on 94th between Park and Madison Avenues, just a couple of blocks from the 6 (local) stop on 96th street. If you need to know how to get there from somewhere else, I can give you directions. Parking a bus would be quite a task. I'll look into it (I think there's a parking garage across the street, but prices are pretty exorbitant) but I'd urge using public transportation if possible.

Guy, if I was to attend this tournament solo and qualify for PACE (assuming this is still a PACE qualifier). Would that allow my school to qualify for PACE?

School officials say that there is indeed room for a bus several blocks away. Should this not work out for some reason, we will consider it beholden upon us to pay for parking in a garage or work out a similar solution.

OK, so with a week to go, here is the field officially registered:
* Bloomfield
* Dorman
* Leonia
* Livingston × 2
* Mount Pleasant
* Preston
* St. Peter's × 2
* State College × 2
* Stuyvesant × 4

Several others have expressed interest but have not yet finalized. We'll probably cap this around 24 or so, so get your registrations in if you have not already! (I should note that Charter is coming with a busload but has not yet officially registered; others who simply have yet to finalize will get priority.)

Good luck to all the teams tomorrow. Looks like a good field. Let's hope that Charter and Mt. Pleasant represent The First State well!

Remember that this same set is being used at Walter Johnson in 2 weeks, so don't discuss the questions outside the tournament or on the message board.

The error is probably that Kristine Choi probably went 1/0 as opposed to 10/0 against Kellenberg A, which would also be more consistent with her stats the rest of the day.
