SNL skit
Re: SNL skit
I watched it when it was on and thought it did nothing more than prove that, minus Sarah Palin, SNL is dead. Implying that all home schoolers are Bible nuts and public schoolers idiots is pretty much the opposite of what actual quizbowl's proven. Brilliant job.

Re: SNL skit
Yeah, the spoof of religious home schooled kids wasn't really well done. I mean, gremlins? Come on.
Anyway, any representation of quizbowl on a TV show isn't ever going to be accurate. That episode of Boy Meets World comes to mind.

A show that teaches you that the weight of the moon is nothing or else it would have fallen on the Earth is full of academic value.rienzi0711 wrote:Anyway, any representation of quizbowl on a TV show isn't ever going to be accurate. That episode of Boy Meets World comes to mind.

Eh, it was funny. Making fun of religion is pretty much always hilarious.

Also, you "younguns" may not be aware that in the not too distant past, homeschooling was virtually the domain of religious fundamentalists, and the occasional Mensa-types who didn't want their children public schooled for opposite reasons.

Re: SNL skit
The show in the skit itself makes speed quizbowl look like it's made for geniuses. Not SNL's best.

SNL's best was back like in the early 80s.

If somebody gave me two minutes to write a quizbowl skit, that's about what I would come up with.

Surely this rule would be waived in special cases so that last season's Bible Bowl champions could get a free pass to the final four.mcn46 wrote:Silly Mrs. Jasper…forgot that "appeals regarding answers to questions may only be lodged immediately following the quarter in which the question was read".

Well, that's certainly an accurate depiction of local formats, and that's all most people have ever heard of. Also, it could be that the kid who negged with gremins had just misheard hemoglobin as that when he learned about the topic.
Not to mention that some of the questions were debatable, paticuarly the WWI one and the war on US soil one. Both answers given on those would have been negs, but there are several plausible correct answers to both.

I got really excited when the sketch started, but by the end of the player introductions I was repelled.
