Harvard Fall Tournament III (11/15/08) -- Cambridge, MA
Re: Harvard Fall Tournament III (11/15/08) -- Cambridge, MA
You will have competition here — don't worry about that!
Please note that we are getting very, very close to the cap for this tournament (and note that the cap was announced last May). We're looking into ways to increase the field size and should be able to give you an update on that soon, but we can't promise anything. If you want to register, do it now. It is also likely that, if we can enlarge the field, we will ask for a limited number of volunteers to moderate; of course there will be a discount for the teams that bring them. Finally, we are very short on buzzers. I know that it's hard to travel with a buzzer system, but if it is possible for you to bring buzzers, then please let Andy know. He is kind of freaking out about the prospect of running ten rooms of slapbowl. Again, you will get a discount if you bring buzzers.

The field is temporarily full until Andy and I meet about the possibility of extending it.

Nine, so it would be welcome if "at least one" becomes, you know, "nine more."

In that case, we can volunteer all two of our buzzer sets. Coupled with Shady Side, seven more?

Hey--we're now under our cap again; Needham is bringing only one team.
And we're capped again.

It looks unlikely that we will be able to increase the field size, so plan on a 36-team tournament. We have at least one team on the waiting list. If you registered three teams but now aren't sure if that third team is going to come after all, please take a moment either to make absolutely sure that it will come or to cancel its registration — it would be a shame not to have a full field when we have to turn teams away. We're really sorry about having to cap the field at 36, but we can't get more rooms. Next year we'll see if we can get up to 42.

Hey,
Please send me an email if you're staying in the Residence Inn Cambridge, and with how many rooms. The Residence Inn can't themselves determine who's actually staying there under our group rate for some reason, and I'd rather like to know how much money we'll be losing for trying to provide this group rate.

Re: Harvard Fall Tournament III (11/15/08) -- Cambridge, MA
Is this the way group rates work at all the hotels around you? In my (limited) experience of reserving blocks of hotel rooms, I've found that some hotels will hold a block of rooms for you at a discounted rate until some date (three or more weeks before the event, specified in your contract with the hotel) without holding you responsible for unused rooms. If that's not an option in Cambridge, that sucks, but otherwise it might make your life a little easier for future iterations of this tournament.

The one did not hold us responsible; once the number of teams attending from out of state declined precipitously over the course of about a day and a half, we kicked out of that deal. This one has innumerable problems (with dealing with us in a customer-servicey way; from personal and anecdotal experience, the hotel itself is terrific) and unless they change, it will not be our hotel next year.

The Mattison twins, who are a main force behind our A team, have just informed me that they can't go. This leaves the weaker two members of the A team, Raymond Xu and myself, as the A teamers currently attending. We're considering calling up the top two B teamers or just canceling- I'll let you know this week what the final ruling is.

Hey, so here's a funny story.
Currently, we have four rooms taken in the Residence Inn. We need to fill twenty rooms for one night and ten for two nights. At the moment, we stand to lose about $6500 because we decided to provide everyone with a good deal. Needless to say, we are never, ever going to do this again, but for the moment, please, please, please stay in the Residence Inn. It's the best hotel option in town; I know this for a fact, and the alternative is that Harvard College Bowl ceases to be.
Thanks.

Hey-
Does anyone know what time the tournament will start/end? Also, how much is it for a room at the Inn? We MIGHT stay there if it's cheap enough, but most likely not. The starting/ending times are crucial, though, so if they could be posted, that's be great. Thanks

The tournament will start promptly at 9:00am, with rounds beginning no later than 9:20am (and you absolutely cannot check in later than 9:10am, because to do otherwise would be totally disastrous for our ability to set buzzers up and get the tournament moving). This is mostly so that we can get the finals started by 5:30pm at the absolute very latest. With any luck, they'll be done earlier, but it's a tournament and stuff happens. I'd really urge you to be here to register beforehand. The buildings are unlocked at 8:00am, and you can believe me that we'll be there ready to register you (as well as setting things up) if you want to come then. Either way, the ideal function of the tournament hinges on the median registration time being like 8:45am.
Anyway, the rooms, Ian, are $189/night. Please stay there. Currently we're looking at financial losses that would bankrupt the club for at least the next year. So your money really is better spent there than anywhere else.
Also: Stuyvesant is newly in our field. Everyone welcome them enthusiastically. Also, please stay in that hotel there.

Re: Harvard Fall Tournament III (11/15/08) -- Cambridge, MA
Hey guys,
I am considering running an NE mirror of RMPFest at Harvard on NOVEMBER 16, which is the day after HFT.
RMPFest is a college-level tournament consisting entirely of tossups on religion, mythology, and philosophy. If the mirror happens, it would be open to anybody. This means that the following people can play the tournament:
(1) high school players
(2) high school coaches
(3) college players
(4) Dennis Loo
(5) random people off the street
Naturally, high school players would be allowed to form larger teams than other, more experienced players, to make things more fair.
This is a great opportunity to learn college-level clues about these subjects and I would urge high schoolers to be bold about seizing such an opportunity.
If you would be able to play at RMPFest the day after HFT, please let me know.

I'd be willing to play RMPfest, but I don't know what time we are leaving. So, if the times work out, I'll play. If not, I'll staff or something until I have to leave. I kinda suck at all three of those things, but I'm eager to learn.

Based on the fact that we got nearly no takers for the Saturday night hotel rooms, we're assuming that a sufficiently small number of teams are interested in a Sunday side that the 20th Century event will be Saturday evening, barring general uproar.

Hey, everyone: Exeter just dropped. If you were considering maybe sending a second or third team, this would be an absolutely fantastic time for you to decide to do so, because currently we're at 35 teams and that's no fun for making a schedule that's at all reasonable. (Though if you have great ideas, we'd love to hear them.)

Five seven-team brackets, rebracketed into five seven-team playoff brackets, advantaged final if necessary? Maximum of 14 games, 15 if you need to play off bracket ties or something.everyday847 wrote:Hey, everyone: Exeter just dropped. Re: Harvard Fall Tournament III (11/15/08) -- Cambridge, MA
The reason I'd be reluctant to do that is that you end up eliminating 6/7 of the field after six games have been played.
The alternative is having two "top brackets," seeded like 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 12, 14 // 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13 (I think that's fair?) and giving them each seven games, bringing us to a total of thirteen games before the final. We currently have thirteen packets including the final AND tiebreakers. And they're not done yet.
So having team thirty-six sign up right now would allow us to hold a much better tournament.

If you'd like, I can give you the preliminary rounds sometime on Thursday, but I think our target was early Friday evening to have the set pretty much done.

Where can we park a small school bus? Parking garages are a no go. Any open lots around that will allow us in?

I quote an email I had teammate and stat room maven Brian Young write and send to another inquiring coach:
"I'd suggest you go ahead and purchase a visitor's parking permit, which is $5 for all day Saturday. Parking on campus is difficult to find without a permit.
Go to the webpage https://www2.uos.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/permit/purchase.pl to purchase your permit online. On that webpage, after creating an account and logging in, you will be given a list of lots to choose from. The most accessible parking lot will be the 1033 Mass Ave lot; there are lots that look closer to Harvard Yard on the map, but they involve some amount of circling on one-way streets and I hesitate to recommend them."

Kellenberg can bring a 4th team....possibly even a 5th if you can accommodate them!
