Game Management System

Post by Victor Prieto »

PACE is currently looking to hire a developer or developer team to complete a game management system, to be made available to the larger quizbowl community when it is completed (akin to Yellowfruit or QEMS2). The ultimate goal is to produce a tool that permits moderators to easily read and keep score at the same time by an automatic scorekeeping system, tournament directors to view and publish live stats, and interface with existing stats management programs. We already have a demo version of the tool that will form the centerpiece of the web app. There are a number of specifications for the software, the shorter version of which is in the job description below and the longer version of which will be discussed with candidates who apply.

Developers can come from anywhere and do not need to have a quizbowl background. For security reasons, we will not be considering applicants who have not yet graduated from high school. If you know of anybody who would be interested (for example, computer science majors in college looking to put something on their resume), please forward them the job application.
We are currently seeking reliable and experienced developers to produce a web application for managing quizbowl and trivia games. In this role, we are looking for professional, dependable workers and an ability to work as a team player. No game design work is required, as this will be a tool to supplement various quiz activities already in existence. A generous compensation will be offered upon successful completion of the base product, with further compensation for additional features and aesthetic design.

Duties and responsibilities:
-Work collaboratively with other developers to create a software system for managing a variety of quiz games
-Base product must include account creation system, PDF and document reader, and customizable scoresheet tabulation system
-Additional features include game clocks, automatic publishing of live stats to a static page, and further statistical data on team and player performances

Requirements and qualifications:
-Experience writing code in React.js and Typescript
-Demonstrated track record of successful web application development
-Ability to write clean, well-documented code
-Good communication skills and a willingness to cooperate with others to achieve goals
-Direct experience with web applications and user account systems a plus

To apply, applicants should email their resume to [email protected] by March 5, 2021. Notifications will be made March 15, 2021.

Is this a contracted, payment-on-delivery/benchmark offer, or is it salaried? It seems the former, but I ask mainly because the post implies that multiple devs will be hired together, and it's slightly odd to hire devs who don't know each other but deliver payment to each together.

Can the expected compensation structure be described a little more, if that's alright?

It is indeed a contracted, payment on delivery offer. We anticipated the possibility that a developer may want to recruit a friend or frequent collaborator to form a developer team and apply together.

We currently have $2,500 allocated for the base product, $1,500 for various additional features, and $500 for debugging and maintenance through the end of October 2021. The payments are contingent on the delivered program meeting our requirements and performing well in testing. As part of the contract, the product will be available to the public, and the code will be open source and available for future community development.

Hello,

The deadline to apply for the position is coming up, in 5 days. If you're interested, please let us know soon.

In addition, one of the applicants asked about the expected timeline of development. We expect this to be a two-month project, and we're comfortable waiting until May to start working together if the applicant isn't able to start right away (i.e. academic responsibilities).

Thank you!
