Harvard College Bowl BLM Solidarity + Matching $1500

Post by celsius273 »

Hi y’all,

In solidarity with Black Lives Matter and in recognition of our club’s (and much of quizbowl’s) privilege, Harvard College Bowl is matching up to $1500 in donations submitted to our Treasurer’s Venmo handle “@K-Li--1.”

While we are incredibly cognizant of the difficulties that quizbowl teams face in getting funding, we would like to encourage teams with excess funds to consider putting said funds to good use.

Our statement is below:
-------------

Harvard College Bowl stands in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Sean Reed, Botham Jean, Philando Castile, Freddie Gray, Walter Scott, Tamir Rice, Laquan McDonald, Eric Garner, and the countless other Black targets of unlawful, dehumanizing, and deadly police violence. We denounce police brutality and systemic racism, including the structural inequities in our healthcare system that have enabled COVID-19 to wreak disproportionate harm upon Black communities.

As Harvard students, we acknowledge our immense privilege and the myriad ways in which we have benefitted from an institution built on slavery. As quizbowlers in particular, we also recognize how the quiz bowl canon and community has and continues to perpetuate insularity and stifle the voices, discoveries, and achievements of Black authors, artists, and scholars, and we pledge to do better. As we move forward, making our Harvard Fall Tournament housewrite more reflective of the stories of the marginalized and pursuing outreach towards Boston-area schools traditionally underrepresented in quiz bowl will be among Harvard College Bowl’s top priorities.

Harvard College Bowl will be matching up to $1500 in donations submitted to our Treasurer’s Venmo handle “@K-Li--1.” Unless otherwise specified, donations will be divided equally among the following organizations:

Campaign Zero
Black Visions Collective
The Bail Project
Chris Redd’s COVID-19 Protest Relief Fund
Know Your Rights Camp
Fair Fight

If you would like to donate to an organization not listed here in solidarity against police brutality, institutional racism, and COVID-19, please note your preferred organization’s name in your Venmo donation and Harvard College Bowl will match it.

For more information on how to be a constructive ally, please check out these resources compiled by the Harvard Black Students Association.

In solidarity,
Harvard College Bowl
