2019 Canadian Player Poll (For Real, This Time)

Post by ArnavS »

(Edit: Removed a bit.) I've decided to give this a shot. If it goes well, we can adopt this format for the polls in future years.

Formally, the eligibility criterion is similar to what it was in the poll's first iteration. That is:
Vote for your top 25 of active collegiate players (active being defined as having played in at least one tournament this year AND having never made a retirement announcement) who either attend a Canadian University OR are citizens/residents of Canada who attend school abroad.

Also, Open players are eligible.
If you are unsure of the eligibility of a certain individual, ask in this thread and someone will help you out. In general, edge cases will be resolved by erring towards eligibility (who are we to decide whether someone is "sufficiently Canadian?")

This does mean, though, that people who have no connection to Canada outside of quizbowl (e.g., those who don't live, work, or study in Canada, but come here for tournaments) aren't eligible. But they are still eligible for Chris' narrower poll.

Standard format applies for ballots; 25 people, you can either reply here (ideally with some commentary beyond the list), or email them to [email protected]. Of course, considering advanced stats data, side events, housewrites, etc. is all fair game.

Let's say the voting closes by the end of May.

Am I allowed to name less than 25 people? I cannot name 25 Canadian quizbowl players

Could you clarify this?

Well what I meant is that this isn't restricted to collegiate players. Although this poll may be more of a lightning rod than I anticipated...

Wouldn't a player poll just for people enrolled in Canadian universities solve almost all of these eligibility problems? These rules aren't that much better than the Ontario circuit poll.

Yeah, this is the optimal eligibility criterion, and it's the fix I had in mind for the Ontario poll. I deliberately adopted these broader/clunkier rules, though, mainly because I wanted to err on the side of inclusion. And apparently there was some fuss last year about Canadians abroad.

Congrats to Saoirse-Monica Jackson for her well-deserved win as the (undisputed) best Canadian player!!!
