ANNOUNCEMENT: RIOT I 11/22/08

Post by Frater Taciturnus »

Reynolds Invitational Open Tournament I
Saturday, November 22, 2008
J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, Richmond, VA

ANNOUNCEMENT

The J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College Quizbowl Team is pleased to announce the first (annual?) Reynolds Invitational Open Tournament (RIOT) to be held on November 22, 2008 at the school's Parham Road Campus. This tournament will be hosted as a mirror of Valencia's Delta Burke tournament. This tournament is of novice difficulty, designed for players from high school and community colleges, along with Division 2-eligible players from four-year colleges and universities.

Hey, isn't Penn's tournament that day?
Why, yes, yes it is. High school teams who have the resources are encouraged to go to Penn's high school tournament run this same day, by the ever-excellent Mehdi Razvi and Evan Adams (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6155).

ELIGIBILITY

This tournament is open to teams from any high school or community college willing to attend, provided all students on the team attend the same institution. This tournament is also to open to teams from four-year institutions where all members of the team are considered to be "Division 2" players by the ACF eligibility rules. Teams comprised of members representing more than one institution or players not currently enrolled at any institution must receive permission from the tournament director in order to participate.

ACF Eligibility Rules, Section C wrote:
12. For collegiate tournaments which recognize high-finishing teams and/or individuals of
"Division II" status, a "Division II" player is a player who did not receive a BA or equivalent
or higher degree prior to the academic year in which the tournament is taking place,
has never played at ACF Nationals, and meets EITHER or BOTH of the following
conditions:
12.1 The player graduated from high school in an academic year year two or
fewer years prior to the year in which the tournament is taking place
12.2 The player did not participate in any collegiate or open academic quizbowl
tournaments before the fall semester of the academic year one year prior to the
year in which the tournament is taking place

COST

$70 base fee (1st team)
$65 2nd+ teams
-$5 early registration (per team registered before October 18th)
-$10 for travel over 200 miles (provide either link or printout from google maps from school to school on registration)
-$10 buzzers
-$10 experienced staffer
-$10 New school discount*
Minimum fee : $20 per team

*For high school teams, a new school is a school that has not participated in any NAQT, PACE, (m)ACF or collegiate event in the past two school years. For colleges, a new school is a school that has not participated in an NAQT, ACF or mACF event in the past two years. Events such as CBI/HCASC are not counted towards this requirement.

FORMAT
So long as four high school and four collegiate teams register, the field will be split into separate divisons and each play a round-robin among the teams in its division. The final format will be determined by the number of teams that register.

REGISTRATION
To register, please contact Tournament Director George Berry at [email protected] Initially, tournament registration will be capped to the first 16 teams, with preference given to "A" and "B" teams from each school. Additional teams will be waitlisted. The field may be expanded as resources and rooms become available.

It's a mirror of Valencia's Delta Burke, which was mentioned. To clarify, Delta Burke is house-written by Valencia.

I did see that, although I couldn't find an announcement for it anywhere. Thanks, though, for clearing that up.

In an effort to encourage teams to register, we are extending the early registration deadline by one week. Teams now have until Sunday October 26 at 11:59pm to register and earn a $10 discount. For novice college teams, this is probably one of the cheapest tournaments you'll play all year, and I encourage you to come.

I'll add that the questions are finishing up nicely, I think, with toss-up lead-ins that will challenge and, dare I say, instruct good novice players. Bonuses, however, being aimed at mostly first-tournament-ever CC players, may appear a tad on the easy side for seasoned novices with HS experience, but there still won't be free 30s, I hope. The 2006 set (available at the Stanford Archive) will provide a good sense of the current set's difficulty.

Chris, neither George nor I ever got anything more than a non-committal "Maryland is sending 1-2 teams" from you, and prior to tonight, the last time I spoke to Jeremy he only committed to sending one team. I've already spoken to Jeremy and believe we have come to satisfactory resolution regarding this.
