TELEOLOGY: a hard hybrid side event (available now)
TELEOLOGY: a hard hybrid side event (available now)
Hi all. I am happy to announce TELEOLOGY (Taylor's Eclectic and Lyrical Expressions Of Learned Oddities and Goodies for You), a hard open "hybrid" vanity side event written by me, Taylor Harvey. The set will consist of 11+ packets of 24 powermarked tossups.
This will be a challenging side event focusing on topics I find interesting and enjoy writing about, both in the academic sphere and the pop culture sphere. If you have enjoyed my past vanity packets or my more whimsical questions at FLopen, FST, or Regionals, you will probably like this set. I take major inspiration from high quality side events like Scattergories, It's Lit, The World As It Is and JORDAENS, and hope to deliver something along the lines of those events in terms of "freshness." The per packet distribution is:
3 Film (heavy skew toward "art" films)
4 Literature (heavy modern/contemporary skew)
2 Non-film visual arts
2 Music closer to the “art” side of things (classical music, jazz, avant-garde, "world" music, folk music)
3 Music closer to the “pop” side of things (pop, rock, hip-hop, etc, but not necessarily music that had chart or financial success)
2 Video games (skew towards single-player and critically well-regarded games)
1 Other pop culture
1 Belief (religion and mythology)
2 Thought (philosophy and social science)
4 "Other" (grab bag of history, science, geography, mixed academic, mixed academic and pop culture, and uncategorizable stuff)
This set will feature a good amount of extra-canonical and new-to-quiz bowl content, so the exact difficulty is hard to gauge, but I expect most questions to be in the ACF Nationals to Chicago Open-difficulty range, with only a few "canon-busting" questions per packet.
This set will be available for mirrors beginning on 9/18/21. Contact me at taylorharvey250 at gmail dot com if you want to mirror this set.

Maybe a little too much science, but sounds like fun!

This is the ideal tournament.

Just an update on this set. It is exactly 50% written/edited and will be done by mid October. It will be available to mirror alongside other in person college or open tournaments beginning then and extending as long as demand necessitates. I will likely be holding a online mirror in November.

I have finished writing this set and it will be available for mirrors as a side event (for non-ACF tournaments) beginning next weekend (9/18). I think because of its rather high difficulty, this set would pair best with Illinois Open, but I am open to other possibilities. I will be hosting a stand-alone online mirror sometime in the next two months. Stay tuned for a separate announcement for that.

I eagerly await an announcement about a stand-alone online version and hope a bunch of better players will let me join them for it.

This was quite probably the most fun I've ever had playing a tournament with hard academic questions, and definitely the most enjoyable time I've ever had playing tough pop culture questions. Highly recommend if you share any subset of Taylor's interests.

This is almost certainly the best set I’ve ever played, academic or not. If you in any way still have the opportunity to play this tournament, you should absolutely do it.

If you wished to host a mirror of this set anytime in the next few months, please let me know soon. If I don't hear from anyone in the next week or so the set will be clear and I will post it on the archive.
