Ontario Hybrid 2020 Online Mirror (Signup + Poll About Format)

Post by ErikC »

I'm happy to announce a Discord mirror of Ontario Hybrid for April 11, 2020. More info on the set can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=23557.

You can sign-up as a team or free agent here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing. This is an open tournament, so anyone can play. Your signup will be official when you have two players and a contact email on the sheet.

Significantly more votes were made for the 11th than the 12th and I'd like the mirror to be one day if reasonable. I've made a poll to decide the format of the tournament - anyone who signs up is welcome to vote. If people vote for bonuses, we could run more games on the 12th people would like.

I'm currently setting the field cap for 10 teams, pending available staff and additional demand. Logistics are TBD.

We are asking for $15 per player from each team, payable over PayPal (to [email protected]) or e-transfer.

Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have further questions.

I've just run a 14-round TUs-only online tournament. It started at 10am and finished before 5:30pm with an hour lunch break.

In comparison, the MWT playtest mirror started at the same time and finished at, like, 8pm after only getting through nine rounds.

Tossups-only is *vastly* preferable to tossups-and-bonuses for online play.

Yeah, I'll adamantly second Conor's post above. I've only played three Discord tournaments, but the first two included bonuses and had rounds that ranged from 40 minutes (with a fast, clear reader) to nearly an hour. That means lots of waiting after you're in a fast round or rushing to play if you're not. That wears you down over 10 hours.

But Conor's MWT moved fast with very short breaks between rounds. And going from toss-up to another toss-up really keeps you focused. I see the poll is definitely against this, but I'd be very happy to have toss-ups only.

While I don't like ignoring the majority vote, I'm currently leaning towards tossups only. I'll see how Terrapin Online goes with its format.

Regarding the field cap, I've moved it up to 10. I'm still looking for more staff to allow for more people to play.

Thanks to some very nice people volunteering, I've been able to expand the field cap to 16 teams! Currently all the free agents would fit into the 4 of 6 slots. With 15 or 16 teams I'll consider splitting into groups and rebracketing over a round robin.

I staffed, and didn't play, so maybe others have different thoughts, but I thought a 2 day tournament with bonuses was enjoyable and given the relative lack of things to do nowadays a nice time

EDIT: I should be clear TO Online is what I'm referring to

I would strongly prefer a one-day tournament; I think tossups-only will be better for that, but wouldn't particularly mind if we included bonuses.

Selfishly, I would also like for this to be one day only, mostly so I don't have to get up early on back-to-back days.

I enjoyed playing MWT tossups only, I think the online format hinders bonuses more so than it does tossups and would prefer to make this tossups only as well.

Looks like the polls agree that we should do tossups only. Currently the field is capped at 20 teams, I've set up a waitlist for full teams but I hope to get another staffer for 22 teams.

I have locked the signup sheet for now as I confirm my staffing numbers and some issues with a signup. Email me at erock199 at gmail.com if you have a whole team you would like to get on the waiting list.

For those free agents who may not get to play, a second more informal mirror may be held in the future for those who didn't get the chance.

I've found an eleventh reader so I've expanded the field to 22 teams. One slot has been assigned to a team on the waitlist. Currently there's one open slot for a team of free agents and a few spots on registered teams; only one or two people on the free agent list will be left out if all 88 (ugh) spots are taken.

We'll be doing groups of 11 with a bye, as some players who have submitted questions are playing. I'll be sending out a logistics email shortly to the email address I've been provided - please forward it to your teammates.

Hi, I haven't received the logistics email yet. No worries if you haven't gotten around to sending it yet or anything like that, I just wanted to check to ensure we weren't missed in error or anything of that sort. Thanks!

EDIT: I just got it as I made this post. Thanks! Looking forward to playing.

Congratulations to Zack and Miri Read Adorno for winning the 2020 Ontario Hybrid online mirror! Thanks to everyone who came out to play today! Stats can be found here: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/6 ... dividuals/ Email me at [email protected] with any questions or corrections for stats.

Big shout out to all the mods and playtesters that made this possible. 22 teams was a big number but we managed to make it work.

This tournament ran very well, and the moderators my team heard were all very good, even Aayush. I'm glad it ran without bonuses. Thanks to all the writers and staffers!

Thank you for running a smooth tournament! Even with a small hiccup, the tournament went on without delay and finished on time.

The set itself was quite fun to play as well.
