Even GHOTIer (GHOTI II 2020 Announcement)

Post by Senator_Jay »

Hey everyone, for those few of you who enjoyed GHOTI a couple years ago, I am pleased to announce that I will be running a new set of historical geographical insanity! I have already written 5 of 7 packets (21 tossups each, no bonuses), with a seeding pack of speedcheck-style questions to follow. My plan is to have this set finished, playtested, and ready to go by ICT. If you played the first set, you'll know that this is intended to be a challenging set in the vein of Geo Monstrosity (and perhaps a bit inspired by Age of Empires), and I am aiming it primarily to those of you who love delving into world history and geography. However, this time around we have a bit of a distro change...

20 Tossups + TB (Power-marked)

A mix of "Current" and "Historical" Geography

Each pack will feature at least...

0.5 Unreal Geo (fictional places, but distinct from myth)
0.5 Lit Geo (either fictional places, or places featured in Lit, or places where things were written)
0.5 Food Geo (either foods, or food culture)
0.5 Historically Significant Commodity (either things, or places where the things are from)
1 Historically Significant Building/Structure (self-explanatory)
1 Explorer/Cartography (also self-explanatory)
1 Myth/Cultural Geo (mythological places, or the mythology of places/peoples)
1 Arts Geo (music, art, or drama related to places and/or vice versa)
1 Space Geo (or astronomy, cosmology, whatever you wanna call it; places out of this world)
1 Pre-historical Geo (early continents and dinosaurs and whatnot)
1 Common Link (things with common names, etc.)
1 Each devoted (or linked primarily) to: Canada, US, Central America/Caribbean, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia/Oceania/Antarctica

General notes:

packets 1-6 will feature at least some questions intended to be accessible for non-historical geo enthusiasts (at least by the giveaway), as well as some questions intended to be quite obscure. At least half the questions should be accessible for most history/geo players.

Pack 7 will be intended as a very challenging pack, with the majority of questions tending to obscure. Not for the faint of heart.

Seeding/Finals Pack will be a series of short tossups; the first 20 will be for seeding purposes, and the remaining 20 will be to resolve any remaining ties, or for determining the champion in a head-to-head, whatever is required or desired.

Anyways, I would like to run this at ICT if possible, and will also likely run this at a Canadian site this spring. If anyone would like to mirror this elsewhere (like the UK!), please contact me at [email protected]. Get studying!

I hope I might be able to persuade/force some sort of mirror of this in the UK

Also, was GHOTI ever posted to the archives?

*UPDATE*

So, I have 6/7 packets written and pretty much ready to go (I'd like to do at least one more test run with them). I will likely have this done for ICT, but this is not a 100% certainty due to a variety of reasons, not the least of which being that I'll probably not be able to make it to ICT this year. As such, I am hoping to have this ready for CO, with potentially another pack or two (maybe get up to 9???). I'll try to get the original GHOTI up onto the packet archive so that you can get a sense of what we're going for here.

So yeah, GHOTIer at CO perhaps?

There already are two full length tournaments at CO, but I suppose you can try to do it after Trash?

You're welcome to try hosting the tournament after CO Trash on Sunday, but you'll have to work with the people at Northwestern and the holders of buzzers to make sure that you'll have enough room and equipment to hold the event. I think it would probably be better, in terms of getting participants, to host this set at the various "side event weekends" that typically are held in August each year.

Also is Scattegories not happening that weekend?

I should also say I'd still be interested in playing this at ICT.

I can aim to try to get this done for ICT weekend, if that makes it easier. Also, increasingly looking likely that I'll actually be able to attend in person. Although hopefully there is enough interest that I may need 1 or 2 potential staffers, and therefore 2-3 rooms. I think about 10ish people played the first GHOTI?

The set is complete! I just need to have it playtested at least once more, and would like to write a Reach for the Top-style seeding pack to kick off festivities. I'm thinking we'll start at 8:30 on the Saturday of ICT, if that works for people. Also, I'll definitely be attending in person, so you can complain to me in person about stuff. I'm thinking $15/person, and if anyone feels like donating extra they can, I'll be putting a chunk of the proceeds towards a student support fund at my school. Hope you're getting hyped!

Well, I think it goes without saying (although I forgot to post on here!)...

GHOTIer must be postponed for the timebeing. Hopefully we can run this sometime this summer when we've gotten through this whole COVID-19 business.

On the plus side (or minus, depending on your perspective), I have written a Reach for the Top-style seeding pack, so there's a little more GHOTI to be played when we do run this :D

Stay safe and healthy!

I dunno if you will be at ACF Nationals (Likely In July or August via the new date) but that's probably a place it can be done (I think they ran SHAWARMA at the ACF Nats hotel last year)? CO weekend might probably be the best bet at this point then, though obviously folks have discussed in here that it would be a jammed pack weekend, so hopefully it can be done!

Sorry for the prolonged absence and neglect of this thread! I've been spending all summer busy doing non-trivia things...

However, seeing as it is unlikely that there will be any live tournaments anytime soon (or at least any that I would be able to attend outside of Canada due to COVID-related travel restrictions), perhaps there is interest in running GHOTIer over Zoom? You can pay your entry via PayPal (link to be provided with registration), unless you are able to e-transfer me money or send a cheque or something.

The set takes about 3-4 hours to play through, so we'll need an afternoon or an evening. Here are the dates I'm proposing; please let me know which works best and we'll figure it out. Afternoon would be 12:30-4:30ish, evening would be 6-10ish.

Sept. 5 (afternoon or evening)
Sept. 6 (afternoon or evening)
Sept. 12 (afternoon or evening)
Sept. 13 (afternoon or evening)
Sept. 19 (afternoon or evening)
Sept. 20 (afternoon or evening)
Sept. 26 (afternoon or evening)
Sept. 27 (afternoon or evening)

I recognize that some of these dates overlap with other events, so if you're playing in those, then don't opt for those times :)

Anyways, hope to see all of you historical geography enthusiasts drop by for a good time!

After narrowing down dates a bit, here's what we have to work with (please let me know what works and if you intend to play; it would be nice to have at least 8-10 players!)

Sept. 13 (evening)
Sept. 20 (afternoon/evening)
Sept. 26 (afternoon/evening)

Or else sometime in October if we can't get enough people. I promise it's a fun set!

Sorry for jumping back in here late; learning how to teach online and in class simultaneously is not as fun or straight forward as it sounds.

Anyways, given circumstances, let's say either October 2 (evening), October 3 (evening), or October 4 (afternoon/evening). I have no preference out of those times. We'll run this through Zoom with BuzzIn.Live as our buzzer platform. Lemme know which works best and I'll set the date and time by this weekend!

Just gonna give this a bit of a bump; we've got a few people signed up so far, though I'm hoping we'll have about 8-10. If you're interested and available to play this coming Sunday afternoon, gimme a shout! If you're interested in playing but unable to make that time, please let me know too and if we can arrange an additional time, then we can cross that bridge later.

Alright, looks like we're at 10 people and ready to go for tomorrow (Sunday, Oct. 4, 1pm EST). If anyone wants to join last minute, you'll need to let me know by 10am tomorrow, as that's when I'll be sending out the Zoom invite and payment information ($20 through PayPal). The room will open at 12:45, and games will start by 1 or shortly after. We'll be using BuzzIn.live for our buzzers, which I'll be sending a room code for once we're all in the Zoom meeting. Get hype for some historical geo madness!
