ANNOUNCEMENT: MUT at Penn (3/20/16)

Post by sarita » Mon Feb 01, 2016 10:02 pm

I am pleased to announce that Penn will be hosting a mirror of MUT on Sunday, March 20, 2016. I, Sarita Jamil, will be the tournament director. Please send any inquiries to sjamil@sas.upenn.edu. Registration will be in Houston Hall's Hall of Flags beginning at 8:30 am and games will be in Williams Hall beginning at 9:30 am.

Please note that there is also a MUT mirror at Virginia Commonwealth University, on April 2, which is equidistant from us for beltway DC/MD teams. Please choose the site that best fits your date and transportation needs. Their announcement is posted here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... =8&t=18324.

QUESTIONS

The set details are here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... =8&t=18214. Details are copied below:
The Minnesota Undergraduate Tournament will once again be available to run in Spring 2016. Questions will be written by Rob Carson, Mike Cheyne, Shan Kothari, Andrew Hart, Carsten Gehring, Sam Bailey, and Ike Jose, plus a narrowly-defined set of Virginian scientists headed by Cody Voight.

Eligibility: Only undergraduate and high school students can play this tournament. If you are a grad student, you generally may not play. "Undergraduate" in this case does not follow the traditional ACF definition--fifth-year (or greater) undergraduates with no bachelor's-level degree are still eligible to play.

Difficulty: MUT 2016 will look a lot like MUTs 2015 and 2014, which did a good job hitting my difficulty goals. The tournament should sit at a level harder than ACF Fall, especially in the early clues and hard bonus parts, but on the easier side of "regular difficulty".

Distribution:
4/4 Literature (1/1 each American, British, European, and world/ancient/other)
4/4 History (1/1 American, 1/1 Euro, 1/1 world, 1/1 British/ancient/more Euro)
4/4 Science (1/1 each biology, chemistry, physics, and other)
3/3 Fine Arts (1/1 each painting and music, 1 other auditory, 1 other visual)
2/2 Religion/Mythology (1/1 each)
1/1 Philosophy/Geography (11/10 or 10/11 philosophy and 3/4 or 4/3 geography questions over 14 packets)
1/1 Social Science
1/1 Pop Culture/Other
REGISTRATION FEES

We will use the following fee structure:
Base fee: $120 per team
Working buzzer discount: $5 each
Approved moderator discount: $15 each
Travel discount: $10 (more than 200 miles one way according to Google maps)

If you have any questions, please contact Sarita Jamil at sjamil@sas.upenn.edu.

METHOD OF PAYMENT (borrowed from Cody Voight)

All teams must pay by the day of the tournament. We prefer to accept payment in person right before the tournament starts, but we will accept checks by mail ahead of time if your procedures require it. Teams who do not pay by the day of the tournament will be charged a $25 penalty and will have two weeks to pay their total amount before we start mailing letters to your school administration about it.

We can accept cash, personal checks, or checks from school, school district, or quizbowl club funds. We have no ability to process purchase orders, credit cards, Paypal, or any other forms of payment. Bringing forms of payment outside of the three listed will be considered nonpayment and subject you to the $25 late payment penalty.

All checks must be made out to either "Sarita Jamil" or "Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania" (must be exact wording). If you bring a check not made out to either "Sarita Jamil" or "Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania" and have no other method of paying for the tournament, you will be subject to the $25 late payment penalty. If you require a pre-tournament invoice in order to have a check cut, let us know early enough for your school to process the payment. We can generally send you an invoice the same day.
