Not About Straight White Men Side Event: call for writers

Post by joycan98 »

Hello! This is an announcement for a project of mine, a side event called Not About Straight White Men (NASWM). Like its title suggests, all of the questions will be about people who are not cisgender heterosexual (cishet) white men*, in an attempt to include people that are often overlooked in most high school quiz bowl sets. The difficulty of this set will be somewhere around HS Nats (similar to SMH), but it will realistically be very swingy. We will try our best to keep answerlines at least tangentially related to the high school canon.

Distribution:
This set, which will most likely be 7 packets long, will focus on literature, fine arts, and RMPSS, but will also contain room for other categories and mixed academic questions. The distribution will be as follows:
5/5 Literature
5/5 Fine Arts
4/4 Religion and Mythology
3/3 Philosophy and Social Science
3/3 Writer’s Choice

Additionally, at least 1/6 of the overall questions will be about people who are neither cishet, white, nor male. At least half of the questions will be about people who are two or more of the above (non-cishet, non-white, and non-male). The rest of the questions will be about people who are at least one of the above.

Editors:
All of the editors of this set will be, in compliance with the theme of the set, not cishet white men. One of our editors has chosen to remain anonymous, and will be credited for their editing work under a pseudonym. The following people will be editors for the set:
Literature - Cindy Gao, Joel Miles
Fine Arts - Joel Miles, Joy An, Σ, Isabelle Papa
Religion - Conor Thompson
Mythology - Joy An
Philosophy - Joel Miles
Social Science - Conor Thompson
Writer’s Choice - all of the above

Writers:
Writing for this set will be open to everyone! If you’d be interested in helping write, please fill out the following form: https://forms.gle/jt3TiKk871ES9XHT7. We ask for an optional writing sample (one tossup and one bonus)—it would be great if the questions you submit, if any, are usable for or related to the theme of this set, somewhat near the specified difficulty, and around 6-7 lines in Times New Roman 10 for tossups.

Please note that if enough people are interested, we may not be able to accept everyone as a writer, and those who submitted writing samples will be prioritized. We’ll get back to everyone who fills out the form with more details by August 22, 2021.

*some bonuses may ask about cishet white men in order to meet difficulty requirements, but they will never be the theme or main answerline of any question
