Missouri 2021-2022

Post by ota97 »

Hey everyone! I'm very excited about MOQB this season (proof is in the rankings document I've been tampering with for the past month or so), so I was hoping to start this year’s discussion with some preseason rankings. Here are some of the teams that I'm predicting for state dominance this year.

St. Joseph Central - I think Frederick-Rivas Giorgi and Gabe Forrest are pretty close in skill, maybe Gabe is slightly better, but I gotta give it to Central because they have a few supplementary players to help round out Freddie.

College Heights Christian - I think Gabe is arguably the best remaining player in the state, but I’m putting him second for the above reasoning. Also, I think CHC has had closer matches to other teams that I would rank lower than them.

Parkway West - My own team, we don't graduate anyone and we’ve been able to pull off or nearly pull off some surprising upsets, partially due to strong specialists in most categories along with decent supplements in our weaker areas. I'm looking forward to playing alongside them again this year and having some good matches.

I’ll also add that the St. Louis Patriots, with powerhouse Owen Farra, Clayton, with an all-senior team, and Ladue, with semi-generalist Max Yang, are all looking strong this year, and that I'm interested to see how they do this season.

I've also made a poll for anyone interested to fill out with their predictions for the top ten this year. I'm not sure how long I’ll leave it open, so give me your responses as soon as possible. I'll give a summary of the responses sometime soon after that. Looking forward to seeing what everyone has to say!

For any interested players, I just announced the 2021 MOQBA NASAT Workshop here. Look at that thread for details on how to register and to ask any questions.

This first semester, it felt like there were some pretty distinct boundaries between certain groups of teams. At multiple competitions, a pattern began to emerge where certain teams would be untouchable to all but a small handful of equally-powerful teams, with the most noticeable example from MOQBA last month. These patterns taken into consideration, it seemed the next best option is to compose a tier list of - in my opinion - the 36 best Missouri teams this fall, which I feel paints a far better picture than trying to rank them. For consistency, I chose not to rank B-Teams, though Parkway West, Washington, and Kickapoo have had a few notable ones.

S-Tier: College Heights Christian, Ladue, Parkway West, Clayton, St. Joseph Central, STL Patriots

These six teams are leagues above any other in the state, and can consistently dominate games against anyone else. However, games played among themselves are much more uncertain, and can go in almost any direction. When looking at a tournament field, expect one of these six to be at the very top. If two or more are there, expect some exciting games.

A-Tier: Kickapoo, Fair Grove, Washington, Hallsville

If anyone at all stands a chance against an S-Tier, it’s these four. A-Tiers are significantly above other tiers, but pale in comparison to ones above them. Expect specialists, strong B-teams, and quality games.

B+-Tier: Houston, Sullivan, Palmyra, North Kansas City, Rolla, Eldon
B-Tier: Orchard Farm, Calvary Lutheran, Mexico, CIS, Smithville, Parkway South

At this point, the tiers start to become a lot less clear-cut, and games both between and below tiers much less certain. Most B-Tier teams show balance among team members, and the capability to bring solid rosters to multiple competitive tournaments. Depending on the packet, many B-Tiers would fit better in C-Tier - and vice versa - so expect some upsets when one plays another.

C+-Tier: Savannah, Hickman, Helias, Oakville, Ft. Zumwalt North, Grain Valley
C-Tier: Jackson, Belton, Poplar Bluff, Eugene, Lee’s Summit West, Timberland, Staley

As mentioned above, the line between B- and C-Tier is very blurred, and rankings here must be taken with a grain of salt. Unfortunately, one of the things shared among most C-Tier teams is a lack of a competitive schedule, which makes it difficult to justify placing a few otherwise solid teams higher. Regardless, expect to see some surprising outcomes between C-Tiers and some more popular teams.

I can't think of many years Missouri hasn't had a single dominant force, or such a diverse field of multiple competitive teams. This season looks to be one of the most unique in Missouri's history, and I look forward to what the spring semester will bring. Feel free to add suggestions for some teams I may have missed!

With the regular season's major tournaments concluded, here is a win-loss table for the top teams over the course of the season (credits to Connor Lee):

In what was the most competitive season in recent memory, College Heights generally dominated, but Clayton and Ladue put up great wins over them at WUHSAC and MO Qualifier, which they won respectively. Other teams like Parkway West weren't far behind either, with circles of death in many a playoff pool. Overall, the number of teams with PPBs in the range of 20 was higher across the board, with more and more players making the jump in skill.

Now as nationals approach, (among these teams above) CHC, PWest, Clayton and Washington are signed up for PACE; Ladue, Central, and Kickapoo are registered for HSNCT; and Fair Grove is headed for SSNCT. It will be exciting to see how these tournaments shake out!

PACE NSC is now over, the teams now lie where they will, but what about the players?

This is the Missouri Player poll. You can respond if you like. There are optional category rankings along with Freshman rankings. Who is the best? You decide.
