Indiana 2020-21

Post by L.H.O.O.Q. »

Here's a thread for discussing Indiana Quiz Bowl for the 2020-21 academic year.

Unfortunately, what looked to be the most successful Indiana outreach program in recent memory has been set back by the COVID-19 pandemic, making it impossible to justify in-person tournaments. However, this also presents a great opportunity to teach our state's new teams how to find remotely-hosted tournaments and compete while maintaining pandemic safety protocols. I anticipate there being some growing pains, but I hope that this year will be great for showing teams what resources they can use to find competition in the future.

My thoughts on the top teams this year, ordered by strength:

St. Joseph
Undisputed favorites to win state once again. At the end of last year, they outpaced one of the strongest Harrison teams in recent memory, and they will roll out that same starting 4 this year. Their roster boasts Patrick McGreevy, one of the best history players in recent Indiana memory, as well as an emergent star in Sam Thomas. I'm pretty sure this year will be the senior year for everyone on that team except Sam, and so it will be interesting to keep an eye on his development, as well as the performances of their B team.

Carmel
I believed strongly in Carmel last year, and they did hang a loss on St. Joseph at State, only to get outplayed in a rematch that eliminated them from contention. Much like St. Joseph, Carmel retains the core of their A team in Akash Bhowmik and Archit Kalra. What strikes me about their roster is the sheer number of players who can fill those other two spots: the roster has exceptional depth, and could enlist any of Austin Guo, Nolan Jones, Colin Zou, or Harry Zheng. This team is continuing to make strides and establish themselves as a new powerhouse in the state.

Harrison
This is the final year for Song Kim, who is probably one of the best overall players in Harrison's history. My best guess is that they will fill the holes in their A team this year with Jashun Paluru and Jack Morehouse, a strong pair of players with complementary strengths. Unlike St. Joseph's team of complementary specialists, this Harrison team would feature several players who are all equally likely to explode for upwards of 70 points in a single game.

Those are pretty much the undisputed top 3. From there on down, I'm not really aware of what's happening in terms of team rosters. I think Mike Le may have graduated from Culver Academies, but I don't know enough about their current players to make any predictions other than that, if there is a Tippecanoe Valley Conference this year, they'll probably continue their streak of undefeated seasons.

Are there any updates on the state of Quiz Bowl in Indiana? I think it would be a great idea if the typical tournaments we have during the school year, such as Harrison's Fall Tournament in October or the Purdue Buzzathon could be moved online, which would be very useful for teams in Indiana that can't attend in-person tournaments. Discord and Zoom have been platforms used by many tournament directors, and I think it's something we all should consider.

The last I knew, Kickoff @ Harrison was cancelled because the normal TD didn't want to navigate the world of online Quiz Bowl.

IASP has yet to determine how they're holding the state tournament series, but at this point, the normal dates are holding.

Purdue's gonna try to host a Buzzathon in January this year. Since there's probably no SCOP Novice this year and no Kickoff, we'll probably use IS-A and try to invite schools all around the state.

If Buzzathon occurs, will teams outside of Indiana be allowed to attend?

Possibly! IN schools will definitely take priority, but we might allow out-of-state teams to apply to a waitlist and invite some in once registration is closed.

So if we're going to have the Purdue Buzzathon this year, which might possibly be the only independently hosted NAQT tournament held in Indiana this year, do we think it's a possibility to try starting a NASAT team in Indiana for this year? I think this would be a great addition, and with proper monitoring, I think it's something we could hold online. I remember St. Joseph used to be the coordinators of NASAT, so it would be interesting if they could revive that for this year. Otherwise, I know in stats like Kentucky, they used to have NASAT tryouts the day after the Class Act Invitational (which was a relatively big tournament with many teams attending), so if we had NASAT tryouts maybe the day after Purdue Buzzathon, that might be something we could consider as well.

This strikes me as a good year to get something like this happening, since Fred Morlan has assured that NASAT will happen online. I know that schools like Harrison have restrictions on how far they're allowed to travel for extracurricular activities, which prevents them from doing most competitions out of state, but I think that having it online can circumvent this issue.

I'd be interested in hearing Ben Dillon's opinion on this as well, and in getting his advice on how to hold such an event.

I think also it might be a possibility to host it through Discord, as I know many states before this year used to host their NASAT tryouts online through Discord. Just something we could consider.

Re NASAT, I definitely think we would be able to revive a team. As usual, though, it's the cost that's the issue. It might have to be that the players themselves shoulder it unless there's some "angel" who can. Because it's online, at least it would be only the entry fee and not transportation and housing.

The selection process in the past was this:
  • To reward previous performance, "norms" were earned in advance by converting 20% of tossups at all Indiana tournaments that year.
  • There was a final tryout after all the tournaments. Invitations would be sent to any player who had earned a norm in advance, but teachnically any player nominated by his/her coach would be eligible to try out.
  • Five players would be selected, one for each of the four categories and one at-large.
  • For each category, there would be bonuses answered (written down) by all the players, but then the top-scoring players on those moved to a tossup round that then determined the winner.
  • For the at-large position, the player who hadn't earned a spot by category but who had amassed the most points overall would get the position.

I have no experience with NASAT, but I would be highly interested in it, as would many of my Harrison teammates. Who would be the coach for such a team?

As some of you guys may know, the Purdue Buzzathon is coming up soon on December 19, but we are very low on registrations from Indiana teams. Is it not possible to advertise this tournament more amongst the schools in Indiana? Possibly IASP could send an announcement, but also I think another good idea is to advertise among our WRAL groups by Emailing everyone about it so that we can get a lot of Indiana schools playing. Many schools at state last year aren't on the list this year, and I think we should bring the word out even more so that people get registered.

A lot of Indiana schools play WRAL, which honestly has poorly written questions, and we should begin the shift where Indiana plays more pyramidal Quiz Bowl tournaments, and this would be a great opportunity to begin that.

The results for the Indiana Post-Regionals poll are in! Like the Ohio polls, teams are ranked using a points system, where 1st place votes grant 10 points, 2nd place receives 9 points, etc.

Average rank was calculated where 1st place received 1 point, 2nd place received 2 points, etc. Teams received 11 points toward average rank if unranked by certain participants. Justifications are below.

Top 10 Teams
1. Carmel A (78 points, average rank 1.25)
2. Saint Joseph A (73 points, average rank 1.88)
3. Carmel B (61 points, average rank 3.38)
4. Harrison A (60 points, average rank 3.5)
5. Culver Academies (44 points, average rank 5.5)
6. North Central (38 points, average rank 6.25)
7. Carmel C (20 points, average rank 8.5)
T8. Center Grove (16 points, average rank 9)
T8. Rensselaer A (16 points, average rank 9)
10. Andrean (15 points, average rank 9.13)
Also receiving votes: Harrison B (7 points), Avon (4 points), Crown Point (4 points), Greenfield-Central (4 points)

The 2020-2021 season finally concluded with the AQBL ONCT last week, with Carmel taking 5th place and St. Joseph taking what I assume to be 28th place based on these stats. Wonderful job to everyone that went!

Now that the season's over, inspired by my own boredom and the polls that other states are running, I have decided to create a end of year player poll for Indiana players. Please fill out that link if interested. Obviously, this won't be anything too serious because the season is now over. We look forward to seeing the results!

edit: I figured that I would also include a team poll for Indiana teams since I was already going a player poll. So, here's the end of year team poll for Indiana! Both polls will close after July 8th, so please get your responses in beforehand. Thank you!

Brace yourself for a long post. Both the player and team polls are now closed. Thank you to everyone who submitted a response! Carmel A was voted #1 in Indiana with Saint Joseph A being very very close behind. Harrison A notched 3rd, with Carmel B not far behind in 4th place. This year was one of the first years in which we had enough schools and tournaments to be able to create a poll like this, since many schools are still being introduced to pyramidal quiz bowl in the state through IASP and other organizations. I hope this trend can continue into the future. Without further ado, here are the full results of the poll.

For the team poll and the overall player poll, I assigned 1st place 10 points, 2nd 9 points, 3rd 8 points, and so on. For the player subject polls, I assigned 1st place 3 points, 2nd 2 points, and 3rd 1 point.
Team Poll:
1. Carmel A: 68 points (ranked in all ballots) (highest ranking: 1, lowest ranking: 2)
2. Saint Joseph A: 65 points (ranked in all ballots) (highest ranking: 1, lowest ranking: 2)
3. Harrison A: 50 points (ranked in all ballots) (highest ranking: 3, lowest ranking: 7)
4. Carmel B: 48 points (ranked in all ballots) (highest ranking: 3, lowest ranking: 6)
5. North Central: 44 points (ranked in all ballots) (highest ranking: 4, lowest ranking: 5)
6. Culver: 37 points (ranked in all ballots) (highest ranking: 5, lowest ranking: 6)
7. Carmel C: 21 points (ranked in 5 ballots) (highest ranking: 4, lowest ranking: unranked)
8. Center Grove: 19 points (ranked in 6 ballots) (highest ranking: 7, lowest ranking: 10)
9. Greenfield-Central: 12 points (ranked in 5 ballots) (highest ranking: 8, lowest ranking: unranked)
10. Crown Point: 4 points (ranked in 2 ballots) (highest ranking: 8, lowest ranking: unranked)

Also receiving votes: Saint Joseph B, 3 points; Harrison B, 2 points; Avon, 2 points; Rensselaer A, 2 points; Andrean, 2 points
