Pennsylvania MS Tournament Online (3/13)

Post by aet16 »

We are pleased to announce the Pennsylvania Middle School Tournament on March 13th, 2021. This tournament will be run by Ananya Tadigadapa from State College, Anish Kodali from Great Valley, Daniel Peelen from Cedar Crest, Yaduraj Choudhary from Downingtown STEM, and Chris Goodrich from Oxford. It will be PA only and closed. Standard NAQT rules will apply.

Date and Time:
This tournament will be held on March 13th, 2021 starting at 9:00 AM. We are aiming for a 1 hour lunch break around 12 PM and for the tournament to end, save finals, by 4:00 PM. We will be mirroring TAILS, an introductory middle school set. More information on it can be found here.

Schedule:
Morning (prelim) rounds will be tossup only, and afternoon (playoff) rounds will have both tossups and bonuses. Teams are guaranteed to play at least 8 rounds.

Eligibility:
Teams must be composed of 4 to 6 students from the same school. All students must currently attend a middle school or junior high school and be in 8th grade or below. The current field cap is 16 teams, however this can be increased with sufficient interest and staff availability.

Fees:
The tournament will cost $40 dollars for the first team from a school, and $30 dollars for each subsequent team. For individuals (not overall schools) who are covering the cost of attendance, fee waivers will be available upon request.

Payment
Teams can pay either through check or Paypal. A W9 form can be provided if needed and detailed information on how to pay will be emailed to registered teams a few weeks leading up to the tournament.

Workshops:
For teams new to quizbowl, we will be offering 3 workshops introducing the activity. These are free to attend for any student or coach who is interested. The workshops will be as following:
  • February 6th, 4-5PM: Introduction to Quiz Bowl
  • February 20th, 4-5 PM: Resources and future opportunities
  • March 6th, 4-5 PM: Mock tournament
Registration:
Please fill out this form (only once per school) to register teams. We will send out an email to confirm your registration and will keep updating registered teams with logistical information. The last date to register will be 3/6/21.

Staffing:
Staffers will be paid $20 through Paypal. We can also sign community service forms for high schoolers. If more staff is needed to accommodate the field, schools that bring their own staffer will get a $20 discount off their overall fee. Please sign up here to staff.

Cheating and Misconduct:
Misconduct, cheating, and other forms of misbehavior are not tolerated and we reserve the right to remove players if they commit such acts. Players will be expected to abide by the PACE Code of Conduct. If you feel threatened or in any way unsafe at this tournament, please reach out to a TD or staffer, or fill out this quizbowl misconduct form.

If you have any questions, please email us at [email protected]. Hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
Ananya, Anish, Danny, Yaduraj, and Chris

Just wanted to say my students are *very excited* to have this opportunity tomorrow, so I want to thank everyone in advance for all their hard work. We can't wait to make our debut performance at this event and see what the MS teams of PA have to show off!

When I told my players the list of schools, a few were worried they'd have to answer questions in French!
Look forward to seeing you at the event shortly, Coach Dzurik -- exciting to have a Pennsylvania-exclusive middle school competition, and hope that we can continue an event like this in the future!

Big kudos to everyone who organized, staffed, and played this tournament. It was great to see so many young people with so much knowledge. Every team had some clutch buzzes and dove really deep on a few bonuses!

Perhaps one of these days a French language tournament would be doable... but for now, we'll be content to compete in English and occasionally say the French names of things.

I want to echo Coach Dzurik's words -- great to see teams at the middle school level from Wallenpaupack (Hey, Coach Neenan!) and the Bethlehem area, and always good to measure ourselves against teams from Great Valley.

A big thanks to Ananya and the rest of the group that organized and read for the event -- happy to have some Pennsylvania high schoolers use a Saturday to give back to the quiz bowl community. Please keep in touch to let us know how we can make this event happen again in 2022.
