NJMSC VI

Post by AdityaPasu »

The Middlesex County Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Technologies in Edison, NJ is excited to announce that we will be hosting the sixth annual New Jersey Middle School State Championship on Saturday, March 6th, 2021. Adhering to NAQT guidelines, this will be an all-virtual event, but we will do our best to give the same experience as past years. You can expect an enjoyable tournament with the best middle-school talent from our region.

We will be setting a soft field cap of 24 teams, and registration can be found here. Both new and experienced teams are welcome to attend. Registration will close March 1st.

Rules:
We will be using a National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) middle school set (specifically MS-36), which is a different set than the Ridgewood Middle School Invitational in February (so you can go to both!) along with standard NAQT rules (which can be found here). Computational math tossups and bonuses will be read.

Teams will be limited to 6 people at maximum, and schools planning to bring more than 6 students must register multiple teams. During the rounds, up to 4 students are permitted to play at any given time, and up to 2 students can sub out at halftime. Teams are also allowed to have fewer than 4 people.

We will be requiring cameras for all students competing to ensure tournament integrity. We will be using a Zoom call throughout the day, with different breakout rooms for each individual match. The buzzing system will be through buzzin.live, which all the moderators will be accustomed to using.

If it is possible to bring a chaperone, we ask that each school at least brings one chaperone. If this is not possible, we ask that you put down contact information for someone we can get in touch with during the tournament if necessary.

Stats will be kept throughout the day through Neg5, as has been done in past years. The link will be sent out at the beginning of the tournament along with other logistics for the day.

Logistics:
The opening meeting will start at 8:45, where we will describe the rules of the game and of the tournament as well as release the schedule for the morning matches. After the morning rounds are over, we will take an hour-long lunch break and return for the afternoon matches.

Fees and Discounts:
The registration fee is currently set at $70 for the first team. There will be a multiple-team discount of $10 for every additional team registered from a school. There will not be a buzzer discount this year, but we have reduced the price of registration accordingly. Rosters should be finalized on NAQT by March 1st, 2021.
Payment Information:
Registration fees can be paid by check. Checks should be made payable to “Middlesex County Academy” with your school’s name and registration fee in the memo line. We would prefer mail in advance. Anything sent via mail should be addressed to:

Middlesex County Academy
c/o Michelle Gomes
100 Technology Drive
Edison, NJ 08837

If your school needs an alternative method of payment, please contact the tournament director.

Nationals Qualification:
The top 15% of the teams will qualify for NAQT's Middle School National Championship Tournament (MSNCT). More information about MSNCT can be found here. At this time, it is likely that MSNCT will be virtual, along with other national quiz bowl events.

If you have any questions regarding the tournament, you can contact us at [email protected] (Tournament Director) or [email protected]. We will post updates as needed

Update: We'll include a payment option using either Zelle or Venmo, as we get closer to the event date we'll provide that info to the teams that would prefer to use those methods.
