NAQT will allow online hosting for 2020-2021

Post by Important Bird Area »

(cross-posted from the high school section --JTH)

NAQT is pleased to announce that for the 2020-2021 competition year, we will allow use of our questions for online tournaments (including online leagues and other events run online). Please note that this is distinct from both Buzzword and from electronic delivery of practice materials via Locklizard.

We will provide a web platform for tournament directors to specify staff and for moderators to access tournament questions at the appropriate time. Moderators will need naqt.com accounts. Online events using NAQT questions will be required to use this platform unless the host has arranged otherwise with NAQT in advance.

Our new web platform will only display the questions to the moderator; hosts and moderators will still need to use video conferencing tools (such as those available in Zoom or Discord) in order to communicate with players.

Question sets in NAQT's standard tossup-bonus format will be available through our online platform starting the weekend of September 19, 2020.

If you're planning to host an online event using a non-standard format or modifications to NAQT's questions, please contact us at [email protected] and we'll estimate if or when we might be able to support your plans. We expect to expand our online platform later in 2020 to enable some formats beyond official NAQT rules (for instance, state-specific high school formats).

In general, online tournaments can be qualifying events for NAQT's national championships, if they fulfill the usual requirements for qualifying events. (In other words, whether a tournament is online or in-person has no bearing on whether it is a qualifying event.)

We expect to adjust these guidelines to incorporate additional rules for hosting online events using NAQT questions. We will post further details when they are finalized.
