To be fair, with respect to quizbowl writing experience, that tends to be an okay predictor; experienced writers of subject x tend to be pretty reliably above-average writers of subject x both because they get experience and improve and because you tend to stop writing a subject so much when the groans become so deafening they threaten your health. Charlie's just (in the eyes of many--I read no trash sets and can't comment myself) an outlier.

Have you figured out what sets you'll be using for this tournament (both academic and trash)? I'd like to playtest the CULT set if you're not using it (though I'd prefer to see you guys use the CULT set for this tournament).

Hey guys, I'm trying to mirror CULT for this tournament. As of now, I have received no communication from Andy, so I've got no idea whether or not there will be an academic side event.

Is this going to start at the usual 9:00 AM start time? I'm attempting to get someone from my high school to come play this tournament and need more information.

Yeah, you guys can all assume that the tournament, with any potential side events, will run about the usual timeframe and would hopefully be wrapped up by 5pm. (Dinner follows immediately)

My heart still resides in Illinois even though circumstances have taken me back to Michigan. Am I eligible to play?

(This is merely an inquiry, not quite a commitment of any sort)

On the other hand, I'm only part of Illinois at tax time. I reside in the sovereign state of Chicagoland.

Yes. This is a philanthropy event and I will be honest and say that we (and whatever team we grant this to) will be happy to take any money we can get. Obviously I figure you wouldn't be going to dinner with us, but that's not a problem. Come on down...and bring friends!

As mentioned in the CULT announcement, I am experimenting with hosting a national tournament of an easier difficulty gradient than a tournament like DI ICT or ACF Nationals (although of course it's hard to compare academic and trash tournaments). I don't want to make any promises, but I'd expect CULT to be comparable to RC Cola in difficulty if RC Cola is much the same as last year.
After running about half the tournament this weekend with some teams from the Pacific Northwest, the bonus difficulty was a little harder than I was initially shooting for. Some of this is due to the fact that the set which was played this weekend hasn't been fixed yet with comments about difficulty from the IRC playtesting sessions. However, I don't see the best teams at the Richmond site putting up more than 20 ppb (and possibly more along the lines of 18 ppb), so people at other sites should be prepared for a set that will be at least as hard as this RC Cola tournament was.

In general, though, I expect almost all tossups to be answered.

I've been convinced to play this. I'll initially throw in as a free agent/solo, but I'll be looking to get my whole team in the next week or so.

Yeah, I will be there, and will probably team up with at least David Riley and Mike Laudermith. We'll find someone else to be on our team too, since Egan wants to make sure you don't break his school.

hey, ANGST is apparently happening or something. Want to see if we can play some of it at your tournament, Jeff?

Either way I'm probably still going but might not play/get absolutely owned on trash so I would be a staffer.

Unfortunately, I think the issue is that no one can reach Andy Saunders to mirror it, unless that situation has changed in the past two days.

Having talked to Andy recently, this date is too early for a mirror of ANGST unfortunately. I would love to see somebody take the initiative to hold a tournament on the ANGST set sometime this summer, though.

I can staff for the trash tournament, if that's needed. Otherwise, I guess I'll play it and get crushed.

I'm open to having teammates for BELFAST if people still haven't found teams - I know a decent amount about visual arts (mainly paintings/2-D stuff) and opera, but not much else.

Nick, Ward, some person we don't know yet, and I will have a team for CULT. I will play Belfast, Nick will be forced to staff and Ward will either play it, staff it, or just sit there. Do you have any details on pricing, registration details, and other assorted bits of information that normally accompany a quizbowl tournament?

It is possible that we will need to take from the free agent pool. If we do draw a free agent they could preferably know about things like Movies.

How does the above announcement affect this tournament? Also, it looks as if I will need one (1) free agent that (preferably) knows things about sports for CULT.

Well looking at the BELFAST answer doc, BELFAST (particularly the music) is probably not going to be ready for Saturday. I'm gonna write some more for it, but I don't know who these mystery extra writers are other than Auroni Gupta. Hopefully we'll get it done. Otherwise this is just gonna be a nats-difficulty trash tournament that may or may not have enough moderators.

Looking at BELFAST, if each writer does 3-4 questions per day until Friday, we will be done. Not a bad position to be in, and I plan on writing about 5-6 questions a day anyway. The project, at this point, is 85% likely to finish on time.

Should the whole BELFAST set be complete, how many rounds would we end up running all together (trash & academic)?

Re: Land of Lincoln Throwdown Announcement

Posted: Wed Jun 23, 2010 12:38 am
by Geringer
I think we've got about the perfect number of teams for a full round-robin. I basically have unlimited packets to play with, so potentially if there is a three-way tie at the end I have enough packets to round-robin those teams, etc. On the other hand, if a team convincingly clears the field by two games, then we go straight to BELFAST.

I'll figure out the pairings for BELFAST in the morning. Ideally, I'll split the field into groups of four or five, play the first X (hopefully four) packets as a round robin. The winners of each pool will play the final packet as a championship game. (If it's three pools, then we're playing a shootout. INTENSITY!)

I'll continually update the first two posts. There is now parking information.

Staffers: questions will be digital. If you do not have a laptop, please let me know and I will attempt to find one for you.

Hopefully about sixteen. I think it's doable and we'll hopefully get done by 6pm if we're quick about it.

EDIT: Actually, the trash tournament will probably be seven rounds in the RR and BELFAST will be a maximum of five rounds, so we're probably looking like somewhere between twelve and fourteen depending on the standings.

CULT's a friggin' huge tournament - I think I heard that there were 20 packets, only 4 of which were playtested with IL people.
