Was this a TU? I can't possibly imagine this going well as an answer line, but then again, I'm always open to 'mind status: blown' when people come up with interesting ideas.Ondes Martenot wrote: aromatic nitrogen compounds

It was a bonus: "For 10 points each--name these precursors of aromatic nitrogen compounds:" with answer lines purine/imidazole/quinolinegkandlikar wrote:Was this a TU? Re: Some DII question feedback
Given that I probably would only convert quinoline on a very good day, that's still rather too hard for a bonus part. It's an interesting topic, but no one learns much about the middle and hard parts in one's first year of organic chemistry (I learned nothing about them); I can see purine as an easy part as long as the question indicated it was the bicyclic DNA possibility. Otherwise, while this is a fine way to try to ask about organic chemistry in interesting, new ways, it's also a sight too hard.

Re: Some DII question feedback
We learned all three of those words in our orgo class (the only one that bio majors take). It seems decent. Not that I would have pulled the words from memory, but...

Re: Some DII question feedback
That's because this is a disguised biochemistry bonus and not an organic chemistry bonus like the lead-in suggests. A biology person shouldn't have a problem pulling out "imidazole" (or "purine", if the question is as basic as asking for a group of compounds including Adenine and Guanine) but an organic chemistry major might. (Speaking of which, where was that bonus listed in the distribution?)Crazy Andy Watkins wrote:Given that I probably would only convert quinoline on a very good day, that's still rather too hard for a bonus part. It could be school specific. I mean, I've taken something like three organic chemistry courses and I had never heard of Diels-Alder before quizbowl.

They're just trapped in 1927. Granted, that was an exciting year in Canada, so I wouldn't complain.

Re: Some DII question feedback
Just so we're all on the same page here
For 10 points each--name these precursors of {aromatic} {nitrogen} compounds:
A. {Adenine} [AD-uh-neen] and {guanine} [GWAH-neen] are derivatives of this bicyclic compound with formula C|5|H|4|N|4|.
answer: _purine_ ["PEW"-reen]
B. {Histidine} [HIS-tuh-deen] and {histamine} [HIS-tuh-meen] are derivatives of this alkaloid, a five-member ring with two nitrogen atoms.
answer: _imidazole_ [ih-MIH-duh-zohl]
C. The antibiotic Cipro is a derivative of this aromatic compound, which replaces one of the carbons in {naphthalene} with a nitrogen atom.
answer: _quinoline_
So yeah...part A is pretty gettable, B and C probably not as much. This was probably a touch too hard for DII, for which I apologize.

Re: Some DII question feedback
That seems like a fine DI bonus to me, but is probably too hard for DII. Also, I'd mention Lindlar's catalyst in the quinoline part.

Re: Some DII question feedback
Organic chemistry; it bears a note from the subject editor that it straddles the line between chemistry and biochemistry, but we needed another chemistry bonus for DII ICT.fourplustwo wrote:Speaking of which, where was that bonus listed in the distribution?

Hey in my two o-chem classes we covered Sharpless dihydroxylation and not Diels-Alder or Friedel-Crafts (apparently both of those are covered in 30C and I only took 30A for my major and 30B for fun). The Quest for the Historical Mukherjesus wrote:do they not have, like, pi electrons in canadagkandlikar wrote:mind status: definitely blownfourplustwo wrote:I mean, I've taken something like three organic chemistry courses and I had never heard of Diels-Alder before quizbowl.
