Ike wrote:This set was officially finished three hours ago. Suck it, Minnesota! The rest of my work for this tournament will be planning it logistically, I can say that unless a cascade of rooms in one building opens up we are looking at a shootout format, despite my uber-high desire to want to do Round Robin. 24 teams is an excellent number, but if we do the shootout format I will desire is a multiple of four. Therefore, from this point out, if you want to play I'll put you on standby unless I get four teams (or four people playing by themselves, or three teams and I'll see what I can do the scrounge up a fourth) And if I do get four more teams to sign up, I express sincere doubt at finding 14 buzzers and and 14 rooms, (14 readers isn't that big of a deal since we could be using bye rounds to fill rooms) so plan for a shootout if that happens.
Is it not possible to just combine teams for teams of around 4 people? I'd personally be more interested in playing with teams than a shootout.

Ike, I'm not exactly sure what you mean by shootout, but why don't you consider running it in the Hilleman (or modified Hilleman) singles format? That would substantially cut the number of rooms required and still give everyone a good opportunity to play a lot of questions (especially if you run consolation shootouts). We could also just do triples. Just a couple of ideas. Congrats on finishing the set early.

Yeah, if possible, I'd have more fun playing on teams of 3 or 4.

I think the best way to proceed would be to either combine teams into groups of 3 or 4, or to devise a format that has 3 or 4 teams playing each other at once.

If I understand Ike correctly when he explained this to me, this is exactly what he means by a shootout. If you combine into teams of 4 that would make it easier for me as statskeeper (and maybe him for determining a schedule?), but I wouldn't proceed with doing that until he chimes in.

I will play any format that involves me being on a team

Yeah, if you read Ike's earlier posts, by "shootout format" he seems to mean something like the Hilleman singles format with a team of two standing in for each player. I think that's sensible.

I kind of prefer "round robin with increased team sizes" to "Hillemann doubles", but I'll certainly play either one.

I am intrigued by literature triples or quads. It'd be interesting.

If teams were expanded, I'd be inclined to play. I didn't want to burden a partner with my suckage, but three teammates would hopefully mask my lack of knowledge nicely.

So, do we have a location and time for this yet?

The timing will be dependent upon CO. Whether dinner will be served or not before and after what will be determined by what time we must leave the building. I am presuming we will be in Harper because of where all the buzzers will be, but I will hopefully confirm these details by tomorrow, after talking with Jerry and the relevant Chicago staff.

As for the actual game play format, I see a lot in favor of literature triples and quads. I think quads would be the way to go, and will consider that as an alternative to Hilleman "singles" doubles. Please see the thread in the collegiate discussion thread and post your response by ASAP.

If we do quads, what I am hoping for is 12 teams to come from this field, presumably by having two teams merge. I'm willing to run a 14 team tournament if the demand calls for it, but we'll cross that bridge later. Ike

Hey: I've been to a million of these tournament + side event weekends and I've run a few myself, including CO Lit last year, and I thought I should let you know based on past evidence that since quizbowl people in general are terrible at logistics, any dinner break is guaranteed to turn into a minimum of two hours of downtime as people blow off your requested deadline for returning, don't answer their phones, etc. I implore you to just push through with the event so that we can all get back to our hotels before 3 AM, as there is another tournament the next morning. I think anyone who can't wait a few extra hours for a late dinner is a big baby, but if people want to snack or eat a five-course meal during their playing of games, no one will stop them; thus, no break is the best solution by far as it doesn't really harm anybody and provides huge benefits.

I don't care what we do about lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday, but if people wind up ordering in food they really, really need to carry out all the associated debris to one of the dumpsters outside Harper--if you're not sure where they are, ask. Leaving large piles of pizza boxes or large containers of grease from Nicky's in the rooms, and filling all the trash cans in Harper to overflowing with soda cans, is risking the UChicago club's ability to continue reserving rooms for future events. This also very much holds for Ida Noyes, the Oriental Institute, and Rosenwald.

Thanks,
-Seth

May I suggest a draft for lit triples/quadruples/quintuples on Saturday evening when we would have a much better sense of room availability in Harper and other logistics? I presume that many players are now driving or flying, with no internet access, and that reforming/converging teams today would not be feasible. Is parking still free on 59th Street? For the four tournaments, to whom should checks be written?

No drafts, its CO Lit, superteams are fun, and I don't want to spend ten hours playing poodle dee poodle dooh. If you really feel that people are not going to know about it, you can email all of them for me about the thread.

I think Matt's suggestion about dinner is right. I will go ahead and do that because of the hour we want to leave.

Not that this should shock anyone, but I have decided to take a 2.5 hour nap rather than enter in the stats from a very messy CO Lit that did not even end yet. If this tournament resumes later today, someone should send me those stats.

Ike wanted me to post that the rest of the tournament will be played at various VCU Open mirrors and you should email him for the set if you are interested in running it there. When he gets internet, he will be posting with the pricing. Also he said that if you paid him over and he hasn't gotten back your money, you should email him.

What exactly does this mean? Do you mean that "if you paid him and he hasn't given back your money, you should email him?"

Yeah it does. I have a list of a people who paid me 20 and I didn't get around to dispensing funds. Email me if you are one of those people and I will work something out to get you your money back.

The rest of the tournament will be mirrored at VCU Open. If you would like to play but didn't at CO, it will be 10 dollars for the rest of the rounds.
If you played five or six rounds at CO and want to play the rest of the set at VCU Open the price is still 15 dollars - if you have paid me for that at CO, then you are in the clear.

If you only played the five or six rounds at CO and can't play the rest at VCU Open, please email me if you paid me for that as well - we'll work something out.
Thanks,

Ike

Stats should be found here. Let me know if you can't view them; I know that there have been problems with access in the past.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I don't have 6 rounds for all teams because not all teams actually played 6 rounds (due to some people suddenly deciding to leave halfway through the tournament). Also, if there are mistakes in these stats, let me know. It was pretty hard to read the handwriting of some of the scorekeepers.

Yeah I haven't had the time to recheck for grammatical errors due to summer stuff, wanting to spend my free time doing other stuff and school now. I will forgo that and email George.
