VCU Novice Tourn. (Sunday, November 22)--Delta Burke mirror

Post by Matt Weiner »

I'd like to see if there's interest in a collegiate novice event held at or near VCU on November 21 22.

As per my previous posting in the general DB thread, these eligibility rules will be used:

1) Only freshman and sophomores are allowed to play. Upperclassmen in their first year of qb may be allowed if we feel that they are true novices.
2) Freshman and sophomores who VCU feels are not "novices" will also be disallowed from playing.
3) BUT BUT MY GRAD STUDENT IS ACTUALLY A NOVICE BECAUSE--shut up. You can't play.

High school teams will probably not be eligible, either, since the type of high school teams interested in playing collegiate tournaments are not the target audience of this event.

Fees will be reasonable and will include moderator discounts designed to encourage non-novices with cars to bring their younger teammates.

If you would send people to this tournament, post here. Hopefully it will be viable even on somewhat short notice.

I'd make every effort to get enough interest for two Maryland teams, but we could presumably manage at least one.

So it looks like we will indeed be able to hold this at VCU. It will be here on Sunday, November 22. Registration is now open to teams composed of freshmen, sophomores, and new juniors and seniors, with the proviso that former elite high school players and other people whom VCU decides are not novices may not play. Get in touch with me if you want to know who on your team is ineligible.

The fee is $110 per team, but the moderator discount is $30, so hopefully this will motivate ineligible players to show up and read. Buzzers and laptops will be discounted at the usual $5 rate. Travel discounts are negotiable.

Look for the Harry White Experience to be making its way to this with two buzzer sets.

Maryland will try to send as many teams as possible, and as many staffers as we can muster if you still need them.

Unfortunately I couldn't get many people who wanted to do this and defend our title, lot of tests going on right before Thanksgiving, but I'll be there with a buzzer and laptop.

Looks like the final-ish field for this is:

Uva
House team
Maryland
NC Wesleyan A
NC Wesleyan B
Harry White Polytechnic Institute

We'll do a double RR with finals if necessary. I'm sending out the e-mail update now.

I'd like to thank VCU for running what is probably the most efficient tournament run in ages (finished with all 10 rounds by 2:30!). The set seemed like it was of a good difficulty for the field, and it did a great job of reminding me that I am completely rusty with this Quizbowl thing.

How many other mirrors of this set are there? i.e., when will it be released?
