THUNDER Northwest - U of Washington - 11/21/09
THUNDER Northwest
University of Washington
Saturday, November 21st, 2009
The Quizbowl Team at University of Washington is pleased to announce it will be hosting its first college tournament of the 2009-2010 school year on Saturday, November 21st, 2009. This tournament will be a mirror of THUNDER, which is being written by Trygve Meade and others. This tournament is targeted towards regular difficulty, around where Penn Bowl was last year. We put in a bid to host TRASH Regionals on Sunday, November 22nd, but we’re still waiting for that to go through. If the TRASH tournament doesn’t end up happening, we’ll try to find a replacement tournament for Sunday.
ELIGIBILITY:
This tournament is open to all players, regardless of university affiliation. I’m trying to attract a slightly stronger field than usual for our region, so if you’re thinking of making a trip to Seattle to play in a tournament, this would be the tournament to do so for.
FEES:
+$100 – Base Fee
-$10 – Discount for first additional team from a school
-$20 – Discount for second and more additional teams from a school
-$10 – Buzzer Discount per School
-$10 – Travel Discount per every 200 miles traveled one way (maximum $40 discount)
-$20 – Experienced moderator discount
-$20 – Discount for any Canadian team which attends this tournament.
Additional discounts may be negotiated for short-handed teams.
REGISTRATION:
To register, please e-mail me, Mike Bentley, at [email protected].
ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
The tournament will take place in Denny Hall. Registration will be probably be from 9:00-9:30 AM, although we’re open to maybe making it later to accommodate teams coming from British Columbia. Details on parking and lunch will be sent later.

Bob, if you want to compete for Boise State, how about a Thanksgiving trip to Seattle? :)Bentley Like Beckham wrote:This tournament is open to all players, regardless of university affiliation. (You probably don't get the whole week off for Thanksgiving, though.)

I'm pretty tempted to drive the 3 miles from my new place to campus for this. I can't totally commit, but if I come, I could either be part of a random team or play solo as Vanderbilt-in-Seattle (degree will officially come in December...).

I may be interested in coming to this depending if I can get a ride from the airport or hotel/someplace to stay, and if the Irvine mirror falls through. I would also prefer to be placed onto a free agent type team rather than play solo if that's legal. I'm going to look into a plane ticket tonight.

I can most likely pick you up from the airport and you can sleep on the aero-mattress in my apartment if you want. You can also get to my place by public transportation / walking if your flight arrives at a time when I'm unable to pick you up. E-mail me ([email protected]) for details.Dude Love wrote:I may be interested in coming to this depending if I can get a ride from the airport or hotel/someplace to stay, and if the Irvine mirror falls through. I just got my plane tickets. Does anybody want to team up on this? I'm probably around a 10 ppg player that gets most of those points in sciences. I can also do most of the TRASH tournament on Sunday, just have to leave around 4:30 to get to the airport.

I can ask if my brother wants to play. He hasn't played quiz bowl since high school, but he's in Seattle now (as an Americorps volunteer), and his team in high school was decent, for the time and place. I was planning to spend some time with him that weekend anyway, and this might be something else to do. (I don't know if he's interested and has the day free, and as an Americorps volunteer, he probably couldn't pay to play, and since it's been such a long time, he might not be hugely helpful.)

I e-mailed him last week, and he never responded. He called me last night, but my phone was silent, so I'll call back tonight. He sounded somewhat interested in the message he left, but wanted more information.tiwonge wrote:I can ask if my brother wants to play. My brother said that if he's free, he'll play. But he doesn't want to play with a stranger.dinoian wrote:Does anybody want to team up on this? I'm probably around a 10 ppg player that gets most of those points in sciences.
So... If he's free, he and I will join you on a team. Boise State will have to play without me.

Mike, can you confirm that you got the e-mail I sent about a week ago with my flight information and asking for your address and phone number?

I know I said earlier that I can bring a buzzer, but if possible, I'd rather not bring it through the airport. If you still need it, I can still bring it, but let me know if you won't need it.
See you this weekend!

We should be fine without the buzzer.dinoian wrote:I know I said earlier that I can bring a buzzer, but if possible, I'd rather not bring it through the airport. If you still need it, I can still bring it, but let me know if you won't need it.

Final stats: http://doc-ent.com/quizbowl/THUNDER%20N ... dings.html
UW A (Mike Bentley, Andrew Hunter, Mike Bocek, Elizabeth Korsmo) defeated the team of Matt Keller, Ian Drayer and Priyananda Shenoy in the 2nd game of an advantaged final.
I believe the set should now finally be cleared to discuss.
