Early Fall Tournament IV Midwest at Illinois (10/3/2009)
Hello, everyone! I'm pleased to announce that the University of Illinois Academic Buzzer Team will again be hosting a mirror of the justly acclaimed Early Fall Tournament, produced by the Brown quizbowl team. I, Trygve Meade, will be serving as the Tournament Director and can be reached at [email protected]. The Early Fall Tournament is especially appropriate for players new to quizbowl, but anyone looking to have a great time playing excellent questions should enjoy it.
Packet Submission
You do not have to write packets for this tournament; it will be written entirely by members of the Brown team.
Registration
To register, please e-mail me at [email protected]. Please be sure to include the number of buzzers you'll be bringing.
Free Structure
Base Fee: $100
Buzzer Discount: $5/working buzzer (even if we don't use it.)
Moderator Discount: $20/moderator used. Please contact me in advance if you wish to claim this discount.
Showing up late without getting in touch with me: $20 penalty.
Location
Let's assume for now that this tournament is going to be in Gregory Hall, which is located at the intersection of Wright and Armory. If you'd like to plug it into the directions software of your choice, the address of Gregory Hall is
810 S. Wright Street
Urbana, IL 61801
There's plenty of good parking located very close in lot E-3, which is less than five minutes away from Gregory right next to the main library. You can see all of these locations on this campus map.
Time
We'll start at 8:30 in a room to be determined. Please show up on time for this tournament, or get in touch with me the second you know you can't make it on time. I'll send out my phone number as we draw closer to the tournament and people register.
Tournament Format
check back momentarily.

Also, if you plan on getting a hotel, do it NOW. That weekend is a home game.
If for some reason, the library lot is full, there is another lot a block or two away. Lot E-12 is located on Gregory between Fourth and Fifth, or between Huff Hall and the BIF.
EDIT: Mistake was corrected.

What Jack said. We need to watch our budget this year and since we are already going to Early Bird the next week, I can't justify another trip to Urbana a week apart. We are planning to go to ACF Fall at UC on Oct 31.

UIC should be able to enter one team. I should have a better feel tomorrow evening when I track down our sponsor(s) at a monthly campus bash. I can bring the repaired UIC lockout system; I have not seen our other in many months. I am still awaiting the return of my CPS laptop.

No, it's not the tournament fees....it's the transportation to get there, and besides, I've already commited to something else. If we have any hope of being able to afford nationals this year, I need to watch the bucks.

Re: Early Fall Tournament IV Midwest at Illinois (10/3/2009)
Good morning, everyone,
I've updated the field above. Right now we're sitting at 25, which is slightly less awesome than what I had before. You can consider the field closed, but feel free to e-mail me if you're not on that list and you think you should be, or if you haven't registered and you want to attend. There's always a chance that we'll be able to accommodate you.
On that note, if you're not going to be able to bring as many teams as you think you will, now would be an excellent time to let me know; if I don't have to figure out what to do with 25 teams, I will be much happier. Shortly, I'll be sending out an e-mail to the people who registered with me. I would appreciate it if you would reply to that e-mail with a phone number that I can use to contact you the day of.
See you Saturday!

People on our team seem to enjoy dropping, so if you are looking for lodging, I want to talk to you about sharing our room at the Super 8 Rantoul since otherwise I am going to have let a proportionally large amount of my own money go down the drain.

Re: Early Fall Tournament IV Midwest at Illinois (10/3/2009)
Congratulations to Chicago D, consisting of Shantanu, Matt, and Jimmy, for winning the Illinois mirror of EFT by defeating Chicago B in game two of an advantaged final! Coming in third was Chicago C.
We'll have stats posted shorty, but I want to say that I was extremely impressed by the performance of all the teams today. I also want to apologize for the late start and some of the delays; although we had a few readers not show up (swine flu!) and a few missing buzzer systems that were forgotten/stuck in an apartment filled with swine flu, those are problems that happen to everyone. I wish I could have done a better job of making sure that things ran more smoothly.
I'd really like to thank the following people: Mike Sorice, Will Turner, Craig Messner, Micah Hodosh, Mark Messner, David Garb, Ike Jose, Donald Taylor, Jeet Raut, Jeff Geringer, and Craig Messner, who were members of our team that came out to staff. I'd also like to thank Charles Martin, who did a great job of doing stats. I would especially like to thank Neel Kotra and Gordon Arsenoff, members of the Wash U team that came to read: that was absolutely key to making sure our tournament didn't take until 11, and I sincerely appreciate it. I hope I can return the favor some time. I'd also like to acknowledge DePauw, who had the grace to shrink down to one team from two so that we could run a smooth and easy format.
As far as I know, the stats are done; we'll get those up quite shortly for your fantasy quizbowl needs. Thanks again to everyone who came out, and I hope you all enjoyed yourselves!

Thanks to Illinois for hosting this, we thoroughly enjoyed attending the tournament. It was great to see both old and new faces at such a large turnout.
