Penn Bowl 2010 at UPenn (1/30/10)

Post by Lapego1 »

Here's the announcement for the 2010 incarnation of Penn Bowl, to be held at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. I am tentatively claiming 1/30/10 as the date for the tournament as long as facilities says it's okay. Post here if you foresee any problems with this date while there is still plenty of time to change it.

As usual, this is a packet submission tournament. As of now, Chris White, Sid Chandrasekhar, Shantanu Jha, and I will be co-editing the set with Eric Mukherjee overseeing the process and adding input where necessary. The target difficulty will be regular difficulty. Try to keep your answers between the levels of ACF Fall and Winter, inclusive. See Penn Bowl 2009, Winter TIT 2009, or ACF Winter 2008 for examples of our target difficulty.

Distribution:
Please note this is slightly different from the usual ACF distribution.
5/5 Literature--1/1 British, 1/1 European 500 CE onwards, 1/1 American, 1/1 World (includes classical), 1/1 Your Choice
5/5 History--1/1 US, 1/1 World, 2/2 European, Canadian, Australian (should include 1 classical and no more than 1 Canadian or Australian), 1/1 Your Choice
5/5 Science--1/1 Biology, 1/1 Chemistry, 1/1 Physics, 1 question Math/CS, 1 question Earth Sci/Astro, 1/1 Your Choice
3/3 Religion, Mythology and Philosophy--1/1 of each; should be different religions, mythologies, and philosophy time periods
3/3 Fine Arts--1/1 non-opera classical music, 1/1 painting, 1/1 other (opera, jazz, architecture, etc.)
2/2 Social science, geography--should include at least 1 question from each category (e.g. 2/1 ss, 0/1 geo or 1/1 ss, 1/1 geo but not 2/2 ss)
1/1 Trash, current events
Total: 24/24

If any clarification needs to be made on any of these, please e-mail me or post in this thread.

Packets and Deadlines:
If anyone on a given team played a collegiate tournament before September 1, 2008, then that entire team is required to submit a packet. High schoolers are exempt from this rule, but can still submit packets for the discounts. All rules regarding packet submission are pretty much consistent with ACF, so see http://acf-quizbowl.com/documents/packe ... p#required for more details. Follow formatting from the ACF website as well at http://www.acf-quizbowl.com/documents/formatting.php. Please e-mail me if you have any questions. The following are applicable deadlines (by midnight PST on the given date i.e. 3am the next day) with all fees added/subtracted from overall registration fees. Packets should be sent to [email protected] upon completion.

Packet by December 5: -$50
Packet by December 19: -$25
Packet by January 3: +$0
Packet by January 10: +$25
Packet by January 17: +$50
We are no longer accepting packets. Teams that were required to submit packets but did not can still play Penn Bowl for a +$150 packet penalty.

Registration fees and other discounts:
Base fee per team: $120
Functional buzzers: -$10 each
Competent moderators: -$15 each
Travel (per school): -$15 per 200 miles (one-way, determined by Mapquest)

Minimum fee per school (including packet discounts): $40

Any high school teams or teams with fewer than 3 players can e-mail me to arrange for further discounts. Any checks should be made out to "Mehdi Razvi" if possible. If personal checks are an issue, checks can be made out to "Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania".

Mirrors:
I am seeking mirrors in all regions as long as there wouldn't be significant field overlap with the main site at Penn. The mirror fee will be $40 per non-house team. Mirror hosts can submit packets to lower this fee but are not required to. All interested hosts should e-mail [email protected] to submit a bid.

Northwest: University of Washington
South: University of Louisiana-Lafayette
Upper Midwest: Northwestern
Lower Midwest: Truman State

Location:
The opening meeting will be in Claudia Cohen Hall room G17, and games will take place in the adjacent Williams Hall. The nominal address for Cohen is 249 South 36th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104. Here is a searchable map.

Field update (as of 1/27/10):
Brown (2 teams, 1 buzzer)
Charter HS (1 team, 2 buzzers)
Columbia (3 teams, 2 buzzers)
George Mason (1 team, 1 buzzer, 1 moderator)
Harvard (1 team, 0 buzzers, 1 moderator)
Maryland (3 teams, x buzzers)
NYU (2 teams, 0 buzzers)
Penn State (1 teams, 2 buzzers)
Princeton (2 teams, 0 buzzers)
Rice (1 team, 0 buzzers)
Rutgers NB (1 team, 3 buzzers)
State College HS (2 teams, 1 buzzer)
St. Joseph's HS (1 team, 0 buzzers)
Swarthmore (1 team, 1 buzzers)
UVA (1 team, 1 buzzer)
Vanderbilt (1 team, 0 buzzers)
VCU (1 team, 4 buzzers, 1 moderator)
Yale (2 teams, 1 buzzer)
Total: 27 teams, 18+x buzzers, 4 moderators

You can post any general questions about any of the above in this thread or send them to [email protected]. Posting general interest in this thread is encouraged, but official registrations should be made by e-mail so I can have a contact for you. Otherwise that's all I have for now.

1) I'll glad to see less than 3/3 required for European (et al) history.

2) "The mirror fee will be $40 per non-house team." That seems about 33% higher than normal???

I thought it was $40 last year as well ($40 per team at the Penn site went to the editors at least). I'll inquire about this though.

EDIT: Confirmed. We'll be sticking with $40. Some reasonable discount will be tacked onto this if hosts want to write us a packet or two.

Assuming UIUC sends a team to a mirror, just tack it on to their discounts.

Hey all,
I'm pleased to award Penn Bowl mirror bids to both Northwestern and Truman State, which should have distinct enough fields despite their relative proximity.

That pretty much covers the Midwest as far as I'm concerned. We're still accepting bids on a rolling basis, and in particular I'd like to see bids coming from the West Coast, Southeast, and South Plains (Texas) areas. Again, just e-mail [email protected] if you'd like to submit a bid.

Will us teams attending the Truman State mirror be needed to write a packet?

Yes, like last year, teams attending mirrors are required to submit packets unless they are exempt by the above criteria.

Just bumping to say I've added the ACF formatting link and actual e-mail where packets should be sent above. Be mindful of deadlines--the first is this Saturday (!). I've changed the timing to midnight PST (so like 3am EST on Sunday for each deadline). I'll post a running list of packets received as they come in.

Maryland will be sending 2-3 teams - we'll have a packet in for the -$25 deadline, which is actually a shame considering that SteveJon Guth decided to go and write 19/17 but couldn't get enough help from our lazy asses to finish out the packet by yesterday.

As can be determined by our turning in our packet, there will be at least one team from VCU at this, even if it degenerates into something resembling our team for THUNDER.

Our packet is rumbling (rumbling, I say!) towards completion much as a Cleveland defensive lineman might rumble towards Ben Roethlisberger (that is, slowly, but that doesn't matter in the end because this tournament's receivers are being blanketed). But we will surely be here.

Updated the above post with "no penalty" packets. People, please remember to keep your tossup answers no more difficult than ACF Winter or Regionals. Though this has generally been followed, we've had several crazy outliers. Andrew Hart's post in this thread summarizes what we're looking for. Thanks to all teams who've submitted packets so far, and we look forward to looking at everyone else's soon I hope!

This applies to your team and perhaps others. We're allowing teams at any site to play even if they did not submit a packet (but were supposed to) for an "exorbitant late fee" of +$150. This is in addition to normal registration fees. Remember--only those teams playing the Washington and ULL sites were exempt from writing packets (and this added fee does not apply to them).

The first post is updated with the confirmed location. I'll send out an e-mail to teams next week with more specifics, but please plan to be here NO LATER than 8:45am. Also, please don't wait until the last minute to register--about mid-next week I'll be closing the field so I can prep an appropriate schedule, so even if you're not certain of the numbers, let me know.

Hey, any ETA on that email? I'm sort of invested in what the format will end up being, as I'm going to have to get on a bus back at 9:30pm due to a Sunday commitment I can't get out of (if I want to have someplace to live this term, at least). (Also, if we're registering at 8:45, let's start play, like, as soon as possible, not "when the last team bothers to show up" as has sadly become common practice.)

An update e-mail went out moments ago to people on teams that signed up--e-mail me if you didn't get one. Until then, please inform me of any changes to the field at [email protected] as usual.

Hey guys,
I just wanted to make an announcement about the pending snowstorm this weekend. If you anticipate this could affect your travel plans, please let me know in advance so I can prep appropriate backup schedules for x-1, x-2, etc. teams. If you're leaving at 5am and at the last minute can't leave or something, it's better if you called and left me a message or e-mailed me (I'll check my e-mail up until like 7:30am Saturday) rather than just not showing up or calling me at 8:30am to tell me you couldn't leave three hours earlier because of the snow. Learning of this by 7:30 would give me plenty of time to fix the tournament, but cutting it too close to registration would obviously be problematic (as would not informing me at all).
Thanks,
Mehdi

Also, format-wise, we're currently at 28 teams. We'd have four prelim brackets of 7, followed by re-bracketing into four playoff brackets of 7 and ACF format finals.

If there are 27 teams, there would be three prelim brackets of 9, followed by playoff brackets of 6 (top two from each bracket) where you don't play the same team from your prelim bracket.

If there are 26 teams, we'd do two brackets of 13, followed by crossover playoff matches for the top two from each bracket.

I'm still reasoning out what's good for 23-25 teams, but 22 should be two brackets of 11 followed by playoffs of some sort.

24 teams should be doable with three prelim brackets of 8, where in each bracket four of the rounds feature two teams on bye. You'd have to stagger those byes carefully, so it's a pain but it can be done.

23 or 25 would probably be best solved by pressing one of the moderators into scab team duty, because those are some ugly numbers as far as bracketing is concerned.

Hey, if someone needs a last-minute place to stay Fri and Sat night (or just one), I got a room in Center City, half of that would be about $20 or less if there are multiple people. e-mail [email protected]

By the way, we'll be having a somewhat extended lunch on Saturday (maybe ~1.5hrs) to incorporate Jeremy's video games tournament in doubles format (at least as many rounds as we can get through). To allow as much time for play as possible, we'll order pizza in, so be prepared to tell me Saturday morning how many people you want to play and how many pizzas you wont. Cost is $5 per player as Jeremy announced in the other thread. You should be prepared to pay up front both for pizza (unless you don't want to eat or whatever) and playing in the event.

Not that I'm biased towards the quizbowl I'm actually likely to play, but wouldn't it make more sense to play the video game tournament after Penn Bowl rather than in the middle? Perhaps I'm being hasty in assuming that most people who might have to leave Saturday night would rather miss a side event than the finals of the main event, in which they might have an opportunity to play for great glory.

I would love to play the video game tournament if it was held at lunchtime.

I would much, much rather get out earlier than play any sort of video game tournament.

Not to butt in with my OUT-OF-STATE OPINION, but you can reach a pretty good compromise here that doesn't seem to cost anyone anything. Just hold a normal hour lunch, order pizza for people who want it, and run whatever part of the video game tournament you can then. You can then conclude the video game stuff after the real tournament.
Actually, that lets you run different schedules if you want. For example, you could use the lunch part for seeding rounds, then announce the seeds at the restart.

Yeah, we'll do this--I was just going to tack a half hour onto lunch for this but I guess tacking it on at the end of Penn Bowl is the same. The logic of Mike Sorice is infallible.

This tournament's lunch break and videogames tournament is now happening. I'm not sure about the intended length of the lunch break, only that our round preceding the break began at 12:10. it's possible that our room began very early, though.

Brown and Harvard are in some form of final; the rest of the top bracket included Swarthmore, Maryland, VCU, Rice, and State College.
