Walden Three at Chicago Open, 7/26/09
Hey everyone,
This is the long-delayed announcemnt for Walden III, the social science and philosophy doubles tournament at CO this year. It's going to be nearly identical to the one that happened last year! It'll happen Sunday night following the conclusion of the trash tournament, with a potential break for dinner depending on the timing.
I'll be updating this post with confirmed teams. If you'd like to confirm your attendance, you can e-mail me at [email protected] or post in this thread.
I hope to see you all there!

Depending when trash gets done, I may play this. If so, if anyone wants someone who doesn't know anything about social science or philosophy aside from random crap, I will play with them.
I DO know some stuff about historiography if this makes an appearance.

I have been so far unable to convince my best teammate for Saturday to return Sunday, so I had better post my need for a teammate here. I especially look forward to the questions on film theory and criticism. My trash team remains committed to all of the garbage scrimmage, and I will be attending the birthday party Sunday night in Chinatown.

Re: Walden Three at Chicago Open, 7/26/09
Hey, everyone,
I am very sorry to do this (you don't know how sorry), but do to some circumstances (some beyond my control, some not), I'm going to have to postpone this. The tournament is pretty much written, but truthfully, about half of my questions were written last year and aren't really in shape to be played at the moment.
I thought I'd have time to edit them before this weekend, but have had and am going to have to take on more responsibility for CO over the next couple of days than I thought, so that just isn't going to happen. I'm really excited for what this tournament could be with a little more time to rewrite the questions that I need to.
Instead of offering this tournament at CO after the trash tournament, what we are instead going to do is offer a reading of the VETO packets that were played at Canada. I know several people have contributed a few questions here and there to the set, and some people have heard a couple of them in practice, but my hope is that this is going to be an event of general enough interest that perhaps even more people will find the reason to stick around Sunday night than they would have if we'd read SS/Phil.
I sincerely apologize to everyone who I'm disappointing with this announcement. I'm very disappointed with my inability to get this together in time. Although it's not much, in compensation, this tournament is almost certainly going to be run along with TIT and Illinois Open at Maryland and Illinois, respectively. We plan to offer the tournament free to all comers.
I am, however, extremely excited to give the VETO set a reading to a more appreciative audience than it generally found at its mirrors in Canada. Again, I apologize, but I hope everyone will enjoy what we're planning in its place. I'd really rather run this tournament as it should be than run it half-edited and rushed.

That's a shame, Tryg - but if your efforts for CO proper are what caused this tourney's death, I doubt you'll hear many complaints.
I look forward to playing the VETO set.

I might hang around to play a couple of VETO packets. I assume team formation is going to be pretty informal?

Uh, nobody asked? I had no idea it need help to be finished? All reports I remember hearing from Kwartler were that things were going fine. I'd be glad to do at least bio/chem and fine arts next year if there is a desire for my services.grapesmoker wrote:I didn't see you stepping up to help and finish CO.wd4gdz wrote:How prophetic!millionwaves wrote:It's going to be nearly identical to the one that happened last year!

Re: Walden Three at Chicago Open, 7/26/09
My point is, it seems pretty pointless to be snarking about Trygve choosing to postpone his tournament because he didn't have the time to raise it to his standards on account of he was finishing a whole bunch of stuff for CO.wd4gdz wrote:Uh, nobody asked? Re: Walden Three at Chicago Open, 7/26/09
Hey, I would like to make the following offer to people: while I'm happy to read the edited version of VETO to whoever wants to hear it, if you are interested in hearing my philosophy tossups and do not plan to play at either IO or the possible Maryland mirror of IO, then let me know and I would be glad to read them for you. It's on the order of 50 tossups, so it shouldn't take more than half an hour to read for a small group of interested people. Once again, this offer applies to those of you who don't think you'll be able to hear the questions anywhere else; otherwise, wait for the actual running of this event.

Re: Walden Three at Chicago Open, 7/26/09
I have heard that the VETO packets were excellent, perhaps even more academic and rigorous than the Canadian organizers had expected, so I will be happy to play any of those rounds Sunday afternoon and evening after trash playoffs conclude.
