It's looking less and less likely that I'll make it to HSNCT this year. I'll probably be willing to write some questions, though, maybe for a finals packet. Of course, if I can make it, I'll want a team.

Ok, if anyone wants to play on my team let me know. I'm probably going to be terrible at this tournament.

Actually, put me down as expressing interest. I'll know shortly whether or not it will be 100% logistically feasible for me to participate.

I'm somewhat late to the team forming party, but if you need a player, I will be at HSNCT and am somewhat decent at geography.

Do I have to submit a packet, or does the ACF rule of high school teams not having to write packets apply?

Edit: I wish to join team Andrew and Mike's team

Submission dates and guidelines:

Base fee: $0. Everyone plays for free if you send in a packet on time,

Packet submitted by April 28th: no penalty
by May 2nd: $5
by May 16th: $10
after May 16th: play at the discretion of the tournament director and editor.

Sorry, everyone has to write something. (Otherwise the degenerate case becomes "40 high schoolers and no college players sign up; then the tournament doesn't happen because there are no questions.")

You might want to show it to someone (when you're finished) who's not attending this tournament so they can edit for you, just in case there are a few mistakes and such that you don't catch on your own. Good luck.

I encourage people with limited writing experience to form teams. Or indeed to just go ahead and send in six tossups and then form teams (as long as you let us know with enough lag time to assemble packets).

For new writers, there is plenty of excellent advice on the ACF website as well as elsewhere on this forum.

I need a team as well. I promise I won't be totally worthless, as geography is one category I'm fairly competant at. I have about 12 tossups already written as well, but I won't be able to write more due to it being finals week.

Anyone interested?

I'll play on your team if you want, although I'm pretty crappy at geography.

Hey, so I wasn't planning to staff for HSNCT and I didn't know when this tourney was going to be, so...here's the thing. I'll go on Friday and make it to this tournament if someone can offer me a floor (in a hotel or otherwise) to sleep on for the night (I could probably give you a few bucks for said floor space). Otherwise, I'm not persuaded to go get a separate room just to play this. If that arrangement can be made, I'm available as a free agent for this event...I can dash off however many geography tossup the formed team needs, and pay the applicable fees or whatever.

My email is [email protected]

I have already written 4 tossups, and I don't want to write more then 15 tossups. Whoever at this point wants to pick me up for thier team should do so because geography is one of my strong subjects... I don't know how much that is saying though.

No. I found out in a frustrating way too: I looked at the updated field about 20 minutes ago, and I didn't see NMB on there. I e-mailed Hentzel, and I get a response saying that my coach e-mailed NAQT on April 25th saying we (North Myrtle Beach) couldn't come because we couldn't raise the funds    . I am so mad at this that you have no idea.

Sorry. Technically we haven't raised the funds either... i'm just putting myself a little bit in debt and we're raising money as we go to pay myself back. Again, i'm sorry to hear that you can't come. That's a crummy way to end senior year. Please try to attend at least one South Carolina tournament to end your year on a good note.

Normal four-player teams are fine, although we'll probably end up with some playing shorthanded. (We've been hovering around 26 players interested, and a seven-team field sounds about right.)

I will not be at the HSNCT, but I'd like to contribute questions to this tournament- if there are any teams that are willing to let a high school student relatively inexperienced at writing to write some geography for their packet, I'd like to do it.

Thanks for the offer, Chuhern. If you can't find anyone who would like help for a submitted packet, I know George was thinking about assembling an editor's packet in case we need to break a circle of death and would appreciate your contribution.

Just a reminder that the first two packet deadlines have now passed and that we have a grand total of one (1) submitted packet. Consider this a reminder that people who want to play this tournament should write and submit questions.

Also: we will plan to use 2008 Gaddis-style scoring. There will be powers and superpowers, but no negs. It would be helpful to mark packets accordingly.

I'll be submitting a full packet on my own (albeit sometime after Judgment/Thesis deadline day, which is May 9th for me), so if anyone wants to help out/be on my team I'll gladly take people, but I'll be planning on doing most of the writing myself.

That would certainly help us out, yes. George will probably adjust some of yours just as he adjusted several of my suggested powermarks.

Bump for field and packet update. We have four packets right now (two submitted and the two editors' packets.) So this tournament will definitely happen; note that there are at least three more packets in progress, and the worst-case scenario is I write another packet myself late this week and have two bye rounds.

Now would be a great time for:

-the remaining free agents to find teams and (if you haven't already) get writing. The field will be capped at either 7 or 9 teams.

-the existing teams to provide me with team names. Otherwise I reserve the right to draw up the schedule with comedy team names chosen via noted lazy question-writing method "open up an atlas and select some placenames at random."

For future reference, please submit tossups with superpowers and powers denoted as they were in the 2008 edition of Gaddis, which looks like this:

Morava et al. discussed defects in this process in kids suffering from Cutis Laxa, and tunicamycin is used to inhibit one form of this process in laboratory tests. The Walker-Warburg syndrome and Jaeken syndrome are both caused by defects in enzymes which are important to this process. This process' variation between species is responsible for the specificity of interactions between the sperm and zona pellucida. The addition of GlcNAc at serine and threonine in the nucleus and the cytoplasm is one example of this process, while in another, dolichol ► oligosaccharide precursor is added at aspargine residues. Those are the O-linked and N-linked types of this process. FTP, identify this post-translational modification which results in a sugar being bound to a protein.
ANSWER: glycosylation

Also, if you're writing on something that's really difficult, you can end it with "For 15 pts" or "For 20 pts" instead of the usual 10.

Thanks!

Apologies for the tardiness of our packet--we've already submitted a half packet with more tossups to come very soon (like this weekend).

Also, since I've written my stuff, I'm pulling rank on my team and dubbing us the "Firth of Forth Four."
