Maryland should be there with 2 teams. Will you also be mirroring the Science Non-Strosity?

I hadn't really organized the Silver Screen Test All-Stars for this tournament yet, so after discussions with Mike, I will be there at the UMBC Cardinal Classic Mirror as a reader, not a player.

But it's not like attendance by our band of dinosaurs is exactly a selling point for any tournament.

IMPORTANT UPDATE!!!!!!!!

Hi all,

I am sorry to say this, but UMBC CANNOT run the Science Non-strosity. We have to vacate the building by 7 p.m., which would make a side tournament a tall order, if not outright infeasible. I apologize to those of you who were counting on it running--I and Bryan have been arguing all day with the powers that be, and have lost--it's a shame, and I hate to disappoint, but this is a situation over which I have no control.

I too would really like to play science non-strosity - is this really a situation in which someone would come and get you and you'd get kicked out of the building? It's my experience that most colleges have an ample supply of empty buildings on Saturday night, so perhaps you could look into this (perhaps by, this Saturday night, walking to a likely candidate and seeing if it's accessible/vacant).

If all of this proves impossible, I could try to look into setting something up at Maryland. There is no longer enough time for us officially reserve something, but I'll see what we can do. The likelihood of too many people wanting to drive 30 minutes to the UMD campus after a day of quizbowl is not high, however, so I really hope you guys can work something out.

From my experience, the UMBC student marshal's do periodically check buildings, I have been kicked out of them before. It is a shame, but the UMBC scheduling department had enough trouble understanding we needed 10 rooms for a day.

Another alternative would be to do what Stanford is doing, which is to host the science tournament and the. . . er, "movies" tournament Sunday morning, with a more relaxed schedule and possibly some quizbowl basketball or something like that. Is there any way to get this together?

We looked into running this Sunday. Unfortunately, we can't even make an appointment to set up room requests until two weeks after the start of the semester which brings us to 2/10--and then the powers that be need at least 3 business days to process requests, usu. they say 3-5 days. I'm not happy about this, but we're coming up against a hell of a wall on making this happen.

Ok. If people are interested, I think the following will be going down:

Maryland will host a mirror of the movies tournament and the science non-strosity on Sunday morning, probably beginning at a somewhat more leisurely hour (say, 10 am). We'll just squat in Jimenez, which has a surprisingly good track record. If Matt plans on coming, perhaps he could also bring some hilarious NAQT questions from the 90s/early 00s to play around on. Afterwards, we'll probably retire to a rousing game of quizbowler basketball at the Maryland rec center. Or something along those lines, it'll be kind of fluid.

So, if you're interested in that, let me know. It does in fact involve staying an extra day, I'd assume, for teams like Penn, but we probably have a limited amount of space to put people up. If we're going to do this, I'd like to get a headcount. Incidentally, could we get a field update for this event?

I'd be willing to stick around for an extra day for both movies and science, but I'm not sure our car would. Still, I'd be willing to pay for a train as long as there are multiple individuals sticking around (i.e. as long as it's not just me in an octuple round-robin with Chris Ray). Thanks for organizing this either way, Chris.

Hey all, here is an updated team roster--we've had four teams drop out, leaving:

Maryland: 2
VCU: 1
UPenn: 1
UMBC house: 1

WE ARE STILL RUNNING THE TOURNAMENT! We're figuring a schedule to avoid byes.

See you all on Saturday,

Mike
