Greetings, everyone! MIT is pleased to announce that we will be the host for NAQT Northeast SCT 2009, to be held on Saturday February 7th, 2009. This is the qualifying tournament for NAQT ICT.

We'll be meeting in room 4-270 (http://web.mit.edu/graceli/Public/direc ... tions.html\) and registration will be from 9:00 to 9:30. We will be doing our best to get you out by 6:30, and it would really help us if everyone's entire team were to be in 4-270 at 9:30.

Base Fee: $120
Additional Team(s): $100 (per team)
Operational Buzzer Discount: -$10
Volunteer Discount: -$10 (only if we use them)
Travel Discount: -$15/per 200 miles
Timer Discount: -$5 (limit 3)
New School Discount: -$40 (per school, not team)*
Minimum Fee: $75 (per team)**

**The minimum fee for "New Schools" will be $50 per team.

When registering, (email graceli [@] mit (dot) edu) please indicate to me how many teams you will be bringing, as well as buzzers, timers, and volunteers, in addition to the classification(s) of each team. For this tournament, we have the following classifications: Division I, Division I (Undergrad), and Division II.

To be eligible to compete in Division II, the following criteria must be met by EVERYONE on the team:
1. The team consists solely of Undergraduate players (no Grad students allowed)
2. No one on the team has qualified for and/or played at NAQT Nationals
3. Everyone on the team is an actual student at the college/university for which one is playing
4. No one on the team possesses a Bachelor's degree or higher
5. No one on the team has played for more than four years in NAQT competitions.

As long as everyone on each specific team meets those requirements, they are eligible for Division II; otherwise, said team is automatically Division I.

Brown will either bring one or two teams. If we bring two, the second one will probably be a DII team.

Harvard will bring ten million teams.

In all likelihood, I'm looking at three or four.

RPI will probably bring one team, maybe two

You know I'm there.

We will probably bring more than 2 teams, we will let you know specifics as soon as possible.

If you haven't signed up with us two weeks prior to the tournament, by January 24, and there's already a large field, we can't guarantee that we'll have enough staff or buzzers :(

Yale will be bringing 2-3 teams, one of them D1, and 2 buzzers.

Yale will be sending 3 teams, one Division 1, and two Division 2.

Plus two buzzers.

Just a reminder to let us know the final count of teams (split by Div I and Div II) soon.

Or else we'll choose for you, based off of what's convenient for us and the schedule :P

We will have 1 D2 team and either 1 or 2 D1 teams. We will let you know the exact number as soon as possible.

As of last week, we're going to have a DII team.

As of checking interest today, it looks like we're at four DI and one DII. Yeah, that's right, northeast, suck it.

12 is better than 10 is better than 11, so Harvard's only going to be able to bring their 4th team if someone else signs up another DI team.

Also, 16 is better than 18 is better than 17. Anyone want to drop or add a DII team?

A grad student (coming to his first tournament, actually) just signed up to go, which means that if I put him on the other team, they will transfer from DII to DI. Would that help?

EDIT: er, maybe we're nixing that DI team and we're doing something confusing in DII.

I have just figured out a configuration under which 3DI, 2DII is at least as good. Does this work for everyone else?

Rumor has Brown, Harvard B, and then Dartmouth/Harvard A. Jerry, Mike, and Eric as the top 3 for individual. Don't know D2 though.

That's about the gist of it. We're still piecing together stats since we lost the D2 stats from the SQBS file after round 7 (and thus were set several rounds back in entering stuff) so I can't tell you exactly who finished where individually or whatever. But: Div I definitely went

1. Brown 14-0
2. Harvard B 11-3
3T. Dartmouth A & Harvard A 9-5
5-8 (in some order): Harvard C, Brandeis, Princeton, Dartmouth B
9-12 (in some order): Yale, Harvard D, NYU, Rutgers

Given the records, Brown was declared the winner outright. After 9 of 11 prelim rounds, the top scorers in Div I were in fact, Jerry, Mike from Yale, Eric, and James from Dartmouth in that order.

As for the rankings in Div II, Yale A and RPI were tied at 12-2 after a 7-game prelim round robin and rebracketing for a 7-game playoff round robin; they played a one-game final which Yale A won 345-265 to claim the D2 title. I believe that Yale B and Hunter College were the next two in D2. I'll repeat my apologies from earlier today that we couldn't get the full stats together by the end of the day, but we will have full stats available by Sunday night.

Thanks to everyone for coming out--we had 28 teams total, including several first-timers or schools we haven't heard from in awhile, and it was awesome to see so many people playing for the first or second time. I hope you guys enjoyed it. Also thanks to our ridiculous cadre of moderators who came from all over the place to help out--I actually don't know who you all are (I'll leave it to Grace to name names), but you're awesome for giving us a hand when we were basically on the verge of a critical staff shortage all day long.

Thanks, MIT, for a very well-run tournament, especially given the staffing travails. We (Brandeis) enjoyed ourselves.

So, this was a fantastically run tournament by MIT (as usual). Anyone who wants to know how to do it right should contact Grace posthaste. One thing I want to remark on was the extreme lateness of some of the teams. I understand that sometimes problems happen: you get lost, you have car problems, whatever. However, it didn't seem to me that the teams that made us late (you know who you are) had any of those issues. It was more like they just didn't leave on time for whatever reason. The problem was compounded by the buzzer shortage, effectively resulting in those teams holding the tournament hostage because we couldn't start without them.

I think TDs should start taking a much harder line towards this kind of behavior. If you can't show up on time because you're hung over or you can't find the missing frosh on your B team who wandered off inexplicably and whose number no one has, that's just too damn bad. Maybe you shouldn't be drinking the night before the tournament or you should have coordinated your rides ahead of time. If you can't be bothered to do that, you're going to forfeit some games and that's just how it's going to be. There are legitimate reasons for being delayed, but general incompetence is not one of them.

Stats are now posted at this location. Note that the current version of the final standings doesn't take into account the playoff brackets, so the rankings are in a very slightly wrong order (for example, Princeton should be 5th, not 3rd, in Division I). There may at some point be an updated version to take this into account.

EDIT: Looks like this file is still a little wonky (i.e. Div I and Div II teams with the same name appear with shared team members). I'm going to fix it up and hopefully split into separate Div I and Div II files.

Awesome tournament, as usual. Most of our readers got through 22 or more tossups, and in general the tournament ran very smoothly.

One small error: our second round against Dartmouth A had a score of 385-235, not 275-235.

Is there any way to make the stats indicate that Brown did not simultaneously field the same team in both divisions? It appears not to make a difference in team stats though, so maybe it doesn't matter except for aesthetic purposes.

edit: yeah, and if you could correct that game against Dartmouth. I don't know what happened there, I but I know we didn't get 10 PPB in that round. I'm fairly sure Eric's numbers are right.
