Global Announcement: ACF Regionals 2009, 2/28

Post by magin »

I am pleased to announce this year's ACF Regionals, which will take place on February 28, 2009.

I am the head editor for this tournament, and will be assisted by Eric Mukherjee (and possibly others).

We are now accepting hosting bids for ACF Regionals. For a general overview of what is required to host an ACF tournament, please consult the official ACF Hosting Guidelines. To submit a bid, please email me at jsmagin at yahoo dot com. We are looking for hosts in the following regions:
  • Northeast
  • Mid-Atlantic
  • Southeast
  • North
  • Upper Midwest
  • Lower Midwest
  • West
  • Southwest
  • Northwest
  • Canada
Depending on the geographical distribution of bids received, we may open up more sites. The Northwest site is tentative and dependent on demand; if there is no demand, there will not be a Northwest mirror. Please submit your bids by Jan. 1 so that people will know which sites they'll be going to soon.

Packet Submission

All experienced teams are required to submit packets for ACF Regionals. For details regarding who is required to submit a packet and what your packet should look like, please consult the official ACF Packet Submission Guidelines. There will be discounts and penalties for timely and untimely submissions; they are detailed in the guide, but I summarize them below:

Packet submitted by:
January 4: -$50
January 18: -$25 (-$50 for optional packets)
February 1: No penalty (-$25 for optional packets)
February 8: +$25
February 15: +$50

All the deadline days are Sundays. Packets must be submitted by 11:59 PM Eastern Time on the specified days to count for that day's discount.

If you do not make special arrangements with me and do not submit a packet by February 15, you will not be allowed to play. There will be no exceptions to this rule. Also, please take special note of the formatting rules for packet submission. Read this carefully: if your packet violates the formatting guidelines, I will send it right back to you. I am not kidding about this.

Difficulty

ACF Regionals is intended as a regular-difficulty event. Please look at ACF Regionals 2008 as an example of the target difficulty of this tournament. If you are unsure whether a particular answer choice is appropriate for this tournament, contact the editors and we'll let you know. In general, you should strive to adhere to the question writing practices outlined in the Guide linked to above as well as in this document.

Plagiarism

By plagiarism, I mean: copy and pasting phrases or sentences directly from outside sources and/or previous questions. Using facts from external sources is great; cutting and pasting text from them is not. If the editors discover plagiarism in a packet, we reserve the right to charge that team an additional two hundred dollar penalty. In summary, plagiarism is bad. Don't plagiarize, and everyone will be happy.

Other Stuff

If you have any other questions about the tournament, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me and I'll do my best to help you with whatever issues arise. This includes questions about question content, money, and so on. We look forward to producing the best set we can; I hope you all enjoy writing for it and playing it.

So, I just learned from George Stevens that Clemson is unable to host regionals due to an inability to get rooms; therefore, I'm reopening the bidding for ACF Regionals in the Southeast. Please email me at jsmagin at yahoo dot com to put in a bid; I'll attempt to award the new bid as soon as I reasonably can.

Hey, could you please reply to my email about possibly getting a brief extension? I'm starting to get really worried.

Hey, I was just wondering when the packets would be sent out to the hosts. It is already 8:15am CST, and I have not yet received them.

Thanks.
