Interest in Buzzerfest/Trash Tourney?

Post by olsb25 »

We are considering restarting Buzzerfest (for those that don't know, this was a packet sub tournament), and this time combining it with a packet sub trash tournament as well, a Saturday/Sunday deal. Our optimal date would be the weekend before ICT (which would be March 28-29, 2009), and I'm just trying to gauge interest before we start trying to reserve rooms, etc.

EDIT: a little clearer?

What's this?! A tournament less than 4 hours from us?! We'd probably attend.

If Philly to Richmond is more than 4 hours you are doing it wrong.

Oh, I guess I read "Our optimal date would be the weekend before ICT (March 28-29, 2009)" as saying that ICT was on the 28th and 29th, while this tournament would be held the week before that.

If doing it by train is doing it wrong, then yes, I am doing it wrong. When I'm driving, I haven't bested 4 mainly due to traffic and hilariously getting lost at points.

philadelphia to richmond directions:
1) get on 95 south
2) get off 95 south when you get to richmond

Getting lost would indeed be hilarious.

Just remember that if you find yourself two blocks from VCU, history suggests that the best strategy is to turn around, go back to where you came from, and then give it another go-round from the start rather than trying to navigate the treacherous streets of Richmond.

If there's not an ANDREW JACKSON MEMORIAL in the way, there is never any excuse for getting lost.

Protip: Taking 64 East to Highland Springs, which requires driving through Richmond (and right past the exit with the sign labeled VCU), means you've gone too far.

There were lots of excuses! Like ambiguous signage and confusion over what "ambulance route" might indicate!

This discussion of getting lost in/on the way to Richmond is great, but... interest in tournaments?

There would probably be a decent chance of CMU coming to this, but it would likely be a much easier sell to my teammates if it was not occurring the week between fake ICT and real ICT.

I don't care about trash, but a Brown team would probably come out for this.

I might be interested in participating in this in some capacity, particularly the trash, if I end up in Philly next spring as planned.

Yeah anyway, I imagine VCU would give at least the academic portion of this some serious thought, thought it would help if we had some better guarantees about the editing as compared to the last PARFAIT.

First off, there are more polite ways of asking this question (e.g., "who's going to be editing this tournament?"). Nevertheless, your concerns are legitimate. After the last PARFAIT's aftermath, Guy and I swore off editing tournaments.

Moreover, we're both trying to graduate, and wouldn't have time to edit more than a very narrow subcategory even if we wanted to. That and contributing the odd question will be it. The exact editing lineup has yet to be decided, but Kunle will almost certainly be head editor. Note that this will be a packet submission tournament, unlike PARFAIT, which depended on in-house packets and packets from mirrors (a third of which never materialized, but it's not like I'm still bitter or anything).

That's only betterif you can be confident that the majority of submitted packets will be good. Usually this is not the case.

I agree. Reading Jerry's analysis of PARFAITs past and his views on BOBs past, there's not much difference.

Hey, let me make something clear: Princeton is a good site for a tournament and a lot of teams would come to play on a good set. I don't want to discourage Kunle or anyone else at Princeton from editing a set; however, Princeton has a history of dysfunction when it comes to editing tournaments. I have no idea what goes on in your club obviously, but my general impression from various postmortems is that your tournaments have suffered from poorly-defined responsibilities, lack of central coordination, and overall lackadaiscal attitudes from large sections of the club. Now, if these things have changed, then I am glad to hear it. I would almost certainly take a team to Princeton on the off-chance that this might be true. My point in writing this is to encourage you to go ahead with a tournament but to also be aware of the problems your club has had in the past and to work on correcting those problems. I also don't want to see any posts afterward by that one guy who likes to dismiss complaints by whining about how hard it is to go to Princeton.
