Interest in Feb tourney @ Columbia?
Interest in Feb tourney @ Columbia?
I know this is early, but I like negs & preemptive strikes.
So Columbia University's Quiz Bowl wants to host a mirror tournament some time late February like feb21 or feb28. If someone is hosting a tournament close to those dates, let me know. Also, don't try suggesting feb14 because the powers above me say NO.
Very vague...I know. I'll try to fetch more details ASAP.

ACF Regionals is on February 28; you can bid for that in accordance with http://www.hsquizbowl.org/acf/host.html .

I'm sure Harvard would be interested in attending an ACF Regionals site at Columbia. Please email me at [email protected]. There's a related issue I'd like to mention.

You can count on Hunter showing up to pretty much anything you decide to host.

Re: Interest in Feb tourney @ Columbia?
Would a Columbia site of ACF Regionals qualify as Mid-Atlantic or Northeast? I would guess Mid-Atlantic, which means that Brown may or may not come. If it was a tournament that did not have a Northeast site, we would definitely show up.

I would hope New York would not be the Mid-Atlantic site.

Cornell is interested in anything that is closer than Boston or Philly.

Why? New York is nominally in the mid-Atlantic region, along with New Jersey and Philadelphia.DumbJaques wrote:I would hope New York would not be the Mid-Atlantic site.

Re: Interest in Feb tourney @ Columbia?
Well, you'd have to ask the head editor of ACF Regionals, Jonathan Magin, what his plans are for distributing the bids, but personally if I were handing out sites for an ACF tournament and had one in New York, I would probably also put one in Boston for the New England teams, and one in someplace like the Charlottesville or North Carolina area so that teams further south in the Mid-Atlantic didn't have as long of a commute. This worked out fairly well for ACF Fall 2006, with healthy tournaments at both Rutgers-Newark and UNC, and I would expect something similar to perform even better this year thanks to the growing interest in good quizbowl over the past few years.

Re: Interest in Feb tourney @ Columbia?
Yeah, Harvard probably could send two teams to Columbia (New York is the only place besides Providence we can get to without a car), but we would send three or four to a more convenient site. In general, we would be more likely to go to a tournament at Columbia if (a) there is no local option or (b) you have a really good field of Mid-Atlantic teams we don't usually get to play. This may mean that ACF Regionals isn't the best option.

Re: Interest in Feb tourney @ Columbia?
The obvious alternative is to find out which of Cardinal Classic and Hoosier Open would be amenable to a mid-Atlantic/Northeast mirror a week after their February 14 tournaments (and does not already have a mirror in that area lined up), and host a mirror of one of those two tournaments on February 21.

We would probably prefer to have a place closer to Boston be the host for Regionals because its about a 5 to 6 hour drive for us to get to New York.

Dwight's idea is good; a Cardinal Classic mirror on the East Coast would be pretty nice for those of us too poor to fly cross-country again.

MIT's already agreed with Stanford to run the Northeast mirror of Cardinal Classic :) We would also prefer that Regionals be held by large, Boston-area Harvard ;)

I will throw my hat in to help in whatever way for a Columbia event. It would be great to see qb try to grow in NYC itself.

Re: Interest in Feb tourney @ Columbia?
I would personally love an Mid-Atlantic ACF Regionals in NYC, and I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the Penn team agreed. It's certainly closer than Virginia, and lets us take commuter rail up, which is always a good thing. I see no reason why it couldn't coexist with a Boston (and, hell, a North Carolina) site as well.
