ANNOUNCEMENT: Illinois Open Mirror (11/15/08) at Maryland

Post by DumbJaques »

Maryland is pleased to announce its mirror of the Illinois Open, set for (Date Change) SATURDAY, November 15. For more info on this exciting tournament, see the original IO announcement here.

This tournament is being entirely written by the Illinois squad, so no packet writing is necessary.

Fee Structure:

Base Fee: $100
Buzzer Discount: $5
Moderator Discount: $10
Minimum Fee: $70

To register (or if you have any questions), please email me at [email protected].

I'm not sure if Ryan Westbrook is definitely running his second experimental tournament as an IO side event, but if that happens we'd love to mirror that as well. I'll update this post as soon as I get word on that either way.

Hope to see you there!

Bumping to note that the date on this has been changed (slightly) to Saturday, November 15 (instead of the original Sunday, November 16). It's our hope that UMD will be hosting TRASH Regionals on November 16 and that these tournaments will function as a nice little package deal, but TRASH hasn't confirmed yet. We'll attempt to run all available side events from IO if this is a two day event (incidentally, what's the status on Ryan's tournament and Andrew's impossible speedcheck?), but if it's a one day event we might have to get creative.

My set will be available. It's about 1/3 done now (the product of a week's work last semester), and I'm going to finish it in the week between Fall and IO. It's really easy to write, shockingly enough.

Hey,

Here are the updated details on this tournament:

We're running the Illinois Open Mirror as part of a weekend event that includes the Religion, Mythology, and Philosophy tournament Saturday night, TRASH Regionals Sunday, and the Impossible Speedcheck tournament Sunday night. We'd really love to get teams to come to both, so there's going to be an additional $25 discount for any team competing in both the Illinois Open mirror and Trash Regionals. If it matters for the purposes of your check-writing, the discount will be formally applied to TRASH Regionals. Buzzer discounts are still $5 per unit, per day, moderator discounts are still $10 per moderator, per day (although if you want to staff one tournament, even if you're not playing in it, you can still apply that discount to the other tournament), and all other details are the same. It promises to be buckets of fun.

We have a pretty large contingent that wants to play the trash, and I am personally interested in the RMP tournament. You know if it's going to be singles, doubles, etc.? We'll also have at least one team for the main tournament.

Hey, as previously alluded to, VCU will be sending a regular team to this, as well as a team consisting of me, possibly with teammates or possibly not. We have 4 buzzers. Can we get a field update on anyone else who has registered?

So Saturday Nov 15 appears to be a game day at Maryland. Do you have information about what parking options will be available for teams on Saturday?
Yeah, here's a VERY IMPORTANT update for people:

There is a football game on November 15 at Maryland. The time has yet to be announced, but could very well be 12:00, which means we need to take a few precautions. I recommend teams do one of the following:

1) Show up at 8:00 am (as in, 8:00 am actually, not qb time). If you want to park at the Armory (likely site for this tournament), you'll need to do that. You will NOT be able to park in lot 1, the usual site for people parking for Maryland tournaments.
2) Park at the college park metro and take a free shuttle to campus. You don't need a campus ID on gamedays.
3) Pay to park at the Mowatt Lane garage (http://www.parking.umd.edu/themap/). Again, you do not want to show up at 9:00 am to do this, particularly as we'd like to start rounds by then.

I'm having someone on our team who's more used to parking during games write up a more detailed guide to this, but it shouldn't be a problem provided you take one of those three steps.

Also, I will confirm that we're running Bruce's RMPfest after the tournament Saturday.

EDIT:

So apparently the metro shuttle doesn't start going until 9 am (assuming it's a 12:00 game). This leaves options 1 and 3 at the moment, which should be fine, but we'll see what else works.

I'm sick and tired of getting my ass handed to me when I'm playing alone, so does anyone want to claim me on their team?

Yeah, although it looks like I may be heading back Sunday morning rather than Sunday night; it depends on the workload at the lab. Just be warned that you should look into making alternate arrangements for your return if you want to stay through the TRASH event.

I'm looking to pick up Eric Mukherjee on the way (complicated, don't ask) so there's potentially room for one more person to make the trip with me, or two if you don't mind being cramped.

GW Quiz Team here. If the shuttles between the Metro stop and the UMD campus won't begin until 9AM, how do you propose we get to campus? Is it close enough to walk? That seems like our only option at the moment.

By the way, where exactly on campus is the tournament being held to? I missed the UMD tournament last year, so I'm not familiar with the campus.

Thanks.

It will take you 20-25 minutes to walk from the metro to Jimenez, where tournaments are usually held (although I don't know if this tournament is being hosted there). You're best off probably trying to obtain rides from a UMD team member with a car or someone else attending the tournament unless you budget yourself a lot of time (as the metro runs quite infrequently on Saturday mornings anyways).

Hey, here are some key updates about this event:

1) As mentioned, there is a football game occurring at Maryland Sunday. It is currently scheduled for 3:30 pm, which means our original plan of asking people to show up at 8:00am is no longer necessary. However, this tournament is occurring in the armory. The armory is, incidentally, one of the few places you can park for free (or at all) on game days. Additionally, we also have a lot of quizbowling to get done, so we're going to start the tournament as soon as possible after 9:00 am. If you want to get a space in the armory, I *highly* recommend showing up by 8:30. If you choose to ignore this advice (or even if you follow it and obnoxious tailgaters screw you out of a space), please be advised of these parking areas, as they're the only ones available. It should be obvious when you get there, but you will get your ass towed if you manage to park in lot 1 or something. Don't do it.

2) Once again, this tournament is taking place in the Reckford Armory (meaning the basement of the Armory). I'll post the exact room in which our meeting will occur as soon as I confirm it.

3) We will have one of our team members shuttle people from the college park metro to the tournament site. Here are the requirements for that:

-We'll be making as many runs as necessary between 8:00 and 8:30. If you'd like a free ride, please be there by 8:00 am. The metro opens at 7:00 am, so I don't think this should be a problem for too many people.
-Send me an email if you need a ride and you are not GW, Andrew and Katy, or Columbia. Also, I need cell phone numbers for GW and Columbia. No email, no ride, enjoy the walk. Route 1 is mostly pretty nice this time of year if you carry a concealed weapon.

If you have found teams, free agents, please let me know. Otherwise see the field updated above to make sure it's accurate.

I haven't had a chance to check my e-mail since Tuesday night. If no one else has asked first, you can play with us on Saturday.

I checked my e-mail and you're in. You're with us if you want. Look for the gang of three geezers on Saturday.

Much like a divine wind full of righteous wrath, I shall be looting and pillaging my way down the I-95 tomorrow en route to this fine event. If you are interested in hitching a ride in my chariot of doom, let me know by tomorrow afternoon. You'd better live somewhere where it is convenient for me to pick you up though.

Hey, we'll be meeting in room 0126, which is the big lecture hall right near the side entrances of the armory. Call me at DO NOT CALL ME if you're having any issues.

Thanks for a well run tournament in which we had good moderators all day. Special thanks to Cameron and Katy for making the trip to moderate.
