This Andrew guy showed up and is playing on the Stanford team. He seems pretty OK at quizbowl.

I should have mentioned that our first round was played in a room without a working power outlet, so we played slapbowl. Our third game (fourth round) against Illinois had six total buzzers, so Jeff Crean and I played slapbowl. The round that is about to begin, we are in a room that has five total buzzers (started out with six, one broke). Why is this happening

For the playoffs, is the only stat that matters win/loss versus other teams in your playoff bracket? For instance, if Stanford makes the top bracket and Chicago B does not, is Stanford essentially not penalized for losing that game?

So far, yes. I didn't get there until about 9:20 for various reasons; my bracket had issues in round 2, as some people had damaged files, so I had to arrange for one reader to get a good copy to other rooms. Some teams in my bracket didn't finish the round before lunch until 2, and I told moderators that teams were to be back by 2:15, yet some told teams 2:30.

EDIT: I would also like to state Donald Taylor's theory of tournaments: if you can't get the entire tournament in one building, don't run the tournament.

The big delay in the morning happened because I took a schedule off a cache of the old collegequizbowl.com schedule directory that turned out to be riddled with errors (a team playing in two rooms in the same round, etc). Fortunately, a team caught this before we started playing; unfortunately, it took an hour to redo the schedule and print it out. We aso wasted some time waiting for McMaster to show up, as they registered, didn't respond to my "if you actually don't want to come to this tournament tell me now so you don't fuck up the schedule" email earlier this week, and then no-showed. We may? be getting back on track now but we didn't start round 1 until after 10:30 so we were put in the hole at the start of the day.

As you may have guessed, there are also buzzer problems.

Hopefully this tournament won't be as disastrous in non-quizbowl ways for Chicago as Nats '03 was.

Chris--

1. My wallet was stolen at the airport on the way into the tournament; in the half hour between it being stolen and my noticing it and calling my bank, $900 in charges had been rung up on my debit card. Also, I had to have my passport overnighted down so that I could be sure of being able to get on a plane home.

2. When we arrived at our hotel, we realized that we were sharing the hotel with a Chicago-based children's group that we'd butted heads with a number of times about room reservations (there was some recurring issue that caused both this group and our tournaments to be allotted the same rooms a bunch of times), so there was a lot of skulking around the hotel avoiding talking to people.

3. Some poor planning led to our sending a first-year who had never played a tournament before to play this on our B team; not only was this a very difficult, messy tournament for one's first collegiate quizbowl experience, but to add insult to injury I believe she fell in a ditch or something on the GT campus and hurt herself.

4. A teammate of mine was horrified at lunch when he went to use the bathroom in the Quizno's (which must have been the nearest dining establishment to campus, because it seemed like the whole tournament was there) and heard a frantic knock on the door, which ended up being a player on another team who had left his sandwich sitting on top of the toilet.

4. Some creepiness.

Chicago A defeated Stanford in the play in-game, and is currently playing a final against Brown. The winner takes it all.

D2 featured Missouri and UCSD tied but within the "requires advantaged final" distance of Ike. Missouri won the play-in and the first game of the final, but lost the second on the last tossup. Ike Jose is your 2009 Division II national champion.

In a high school in the great state of Ohio.

Ike's accepted to UIUC and on "Priority Wait List" to Carnegie-Mellon, according to a conversation I had with him after a round.
