Oh, whoops; upon rereading he did say "with." I assumed not, because I can get you a permit for one of several lots. Yeah, there's some lot Jerry parked in for T-Party that's sort of far away--I assumed that was the one he meant.Matt Weiner wrote:I think Jerry is just talking about the lot for permits; where is the other one?everyday847 wrote:Issue with rentals is that I would have to know your license plate number to get you a parking permit. I recommend parking at the Alewife T-stop ($8 a day, no issues getting a spot on Saturday mornings, and you can leave your car overnight if need be) and taking the T to Harvard Square. No mucking about with driving in Boston required.

Driving through Boston with Jerry and Eric and getting stuck when a bus inexplicably stopped in front of us on a highway ramp is pretty much my best qb memory ever, so I recommend one carefully considers such drastic action. No mucking about with driving in Boston required.

To provide additional support, driving through Boston/Waltham with Jerry, Dennis, Aaron, and Eric and listening to Jerry rant about how terrible Boston driving was while Charles Meigs repeatedly asked "What?" from the trunk is one of my best QB memories. You may regret it at the time, but the stories are invaluable.DumbJaques wrote:Driving through Boston with Jerry and Eric and getting stuck when a bus inexplicably stopped in front of us on a highway ramp is pretty much my best qb memory ever, so I recommend one carefully considers such drastic action. No mucking about with driving in Boston required.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: Harvard International - 4/11/09
I noticed that seven teams have entered (eight if Brown sends two squads). If you need an eighth team, please feel to put me and Guy on that team. I cannot speak for the third free agent, whom I do not know, but I would welcome a third player, of course. Alternatively, should that eighth team materialize after all, Guy and I would be happy to join some other team stuck at two players; such a contraction worked great for me at my last tournament--Fichte.

Driving through Westchester listening to Jerry curse the makers of road signs and a profanity-laced detour well towards Annapolis after a Maryland tournament are on my list of top quizbowl memories, too, so I'd suggest that the common factor is NOT Boston (though I hear their road system could turn pretty much any quizbowl driver into a Jerry for the weekend).Ukonvasara wrote:To provide additional support, driving through Boston/Waltham with Jerry, Dennis, Aaron, and Eric and listening to Jerry rant about how terrible Boston driving was while Charles Meigs repeatedly asked "What?" from the trunk is one of my best QB memories. Sorry for the super late notice, but Dartmouth is interested in coming to this tournament. We were pretty sure that we weren't going to be able to make it due to funding issues, but it now seems that we could definitely bring one team and quite possibly two. Please let us know if we can still attend and if so, I will try to let you know by tonight whether we are bringing one or two teams.

Either one team or two would be fine; two would maybe be preferable to keep the number of teams even, but if one works better for you we can maybe do wonky things involving free agents.

I'm leaving now to go pick up the VCU team and drive to the airport. I'd like to know which building we're in on Saturday morning, when we should be there, and where we should park (name and location of actual parking lot where I can simply pay money in exchange for parking, rather than a lot needing permit that I don't have or lot near train station I'm not going to for train that doesn't run at the time the tournament will start or end, is required). Post it here at some time before 7 AM tomorrow and I will see it.

We're in Sever Hall, which you will see on this map. Mass Ave is to the south, the Old Yard (which contains Sever) is to the north. Be there at 8:30am (ideally?) for registration. As for a parking lot where you can pay money, I'm not entirely sure; I'll post that shortly. (The permit situation has always worked out in the past.) Jerry, could you post details about that lot where you parked for T-Party? I'll also inquire with Kyle etc., who might know.

There's a lot on Church St. off of Harvard Square that's a cash lot, but it's expensive and you can't park yourself. We used it a few times during my first two years.
EDIT: Google maps link to the lot: here. Zoom out and you'll get a bearing of where it is in relation to Harvard Square and the campus.

Brian Young got us a parking permit which is five dollars for the day and pretty close to Sever Hall. That seems to be the best option

Finding out about the parking permit thing would be nice because the last couple times we've had to pay $20ish to park in a garage near Sever.
Also, our B team has three players, so if one of the free agents wants to play with them, they are more than welcome to.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: Harvard International - 4/11/09
Dartmouth--if you want a permit, as I've noted before/ on this forum, we need your plate number (and state).
From Brian Young:
"The official University policy seems to be to use the Business School lot:
Q. I need to purchase a visitor's permit at the last minute, after office hours, and I have no access to a computer. Can I still park on campus?
A. Please proceed to the Business School Lot, which is staffed twenty-four hours a day, year-round. You may purchase a permit for the lot at the guard booth.
http://www.uos.harvard.edu/transportati ... king.shtml
I should add that visitors can also park at non-university lots, as listed on this map ( http://www.harvardsquare.com/maps.aspx ), which are closer to the Yard but seem to run in the $20 range for the day. (I'm not sure what the Business School rate is.)"

In addition to Alewife, parking is also available at the marginally closer Porter Square for people who don't acquire parking passes at Harvard.

Update:
The playoffs are underway as we speak and four teams are still very much in the running. Here are the prelim records of the top playoff bracket with the teams that beat them in parentheses:
Dartmouth A 7-1 (Brown A)
VCU 7-1 (Dartmouth A)
Brown A 6-2 (VCU, Rom and Friends)
Rom and Friends 6-2 (Dartmouth A, VCU)
Note: Dartmouth A has Anirudh, Randall, Dominic, and Tiberiu. VCU includes Matt. Brown is missing Jerry. Rom's friends are Billy Beyer and Jonathan Magin.
We have already awarded prizes for the top individual scorers. The top three went to Jonathan, Matt, and Eric (in that order).
