by theMoMA
This is the first global announcement for ACF Fall 2008, which will take place on the weekend of November 8, 2008.

Editors

Head Editor: Me

Assistant Editors: Rob Carson, Trevor Davis, Ted Gioia, Gautam Kandlikar

Hosting

We are currently seeking ACF Fall hosts. Hosting is an excellent way to cut down on travel costs, raise money for your club, and allow multiple house teams to gain exposure to well-written, accessible questions. If you are interested in hosting, please read through the official ACF Hosting Guide and then email me at [email protected].

Update: As of 26 Sept., the following schools have had their bids to host ACF Fall accepted:

Southwest: University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK. TD: David John Gagne II.
Midwest: Truman State University, Kirksville, MO. TD: Christopher Stone.
South: Mississippi State University, Starkville, MS. TD: Harry Nelson.
North Atlantic: Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. TD: Trevor Davis.
West: University of California-Irvine, Irvine, CA. TD: Dwight Wynne.
New England: Brandeis University, Waltham, MA. TD: Hannah Kirsch.
Florida: University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. TD: Justin Byrd.
South Atlantic: Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA. TD: Matt Weiner.
North: University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN. TD: Andrew Hart.
Ontario: McMaster University, Hamilton, ON. TD: Jay Misuk
Mid-South: University of Kentucky-Knoxville. TD: Scotti Whitmire.

Packet Submission

As per the new ACF submission rules, any team with at least one person on it who played a regular, collegiate, academic quizbowl tournament prior to September 1, 2007 is required to submit a packet in order to participate in an ACF tournament in 2008-2009. This includes ACF Fall. Teams required to submit packets who do not submit one by the final deadline will be dropped from the tournament.

This year's submission schedule is as follows:

Packet submitted prior to or on:
Sept 14: -$50
Sept 28: -$25 (-$50 for teams not required to submit packets)
Oct 12: No penalty (-$25 for teams not required to submit packets)
Oct 19: +$25
Oct 26: +$50
After Oct. 26: The editors may grant one or more 24-hour extensions to the final deadline at an additional penalty of $10 per day.

For additional discounts, please refer to this document.

Packet penalties

Teams will incur penalties for the following offenses: Formatting issues, plagiarism, and writing specific types of forbidden questions. Please see this document for more info.

Read this before writing or submitting your packet

Refer to the 2008-2009 ACF Packet and Fee Information document for a more detailed explanation of submission- and fee-related information.

Ideally, I'd like to have all the host bids by August 24. Since quite a few programs will not be able to have in-house discussions because they're not yet in session on that date, I will not make a final decision about hosting until September 7. However, some regions will have a host accepted on a rolling basis after August 24 but before September 7, which means that some regions will have hosts announced before the final bid entry deadline; if you want to host ACF Fall, it's in your best interests to submit a bid before August 24. Please do so by emailing me at [email protected]. Thanks.

August 24: Preferred bid entry deadline
Aug. 25-Sept. 6: Rolling acceptances start
September 7: Drop-dead bid deadline

Note to programs: Three days to submit your bids for preferred status. Especially seeking bids in the Boston area and Florida.

I think UF is at least considering hosting ACF Fall, but they are waiting for the semester to start and meet about it.

I am pleased to announce that we have accepted bids in the following regions:

Southwest: University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK. TD: David John Gagne II.
Midwest: Truman State University, Kirksville, MO. TD: Christopher Stone.
South: Mississippi State University, Starkville, MS. TD: Harry Nelson.
North Atlantic: Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. TD: Trevor Davis.
West: University of California-Irvine, Irvine, CA. TD: Dwight Wynne.
New England: Brandeis University, Waltham, MA. TD: Hannah Kirsch.
Florida: University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. TD: Justin Byrd.
South Atlantic: Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA. TD: Matt Weiner.
North: University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN. TD: Andrew Hart.

Tournament directors, please post announcements for your individual ACF Fall sites in this forum as soon as possible.

In addition, we are currently working with the following schools to host ACF Fall in Ontario and the upper Southeast:

Ontario: McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario.
Southeast: University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN.

For the convenience of teams looking for the closest ACF Fall site, I've compiled a Google map that has markers for all of the tournament sites. Clicking on a marker will bring up a menu that lists the tournament building and will link to the individual site announcements, once they are posted. You can also click the marker and click "Directions to here" in order to get turn-by-turn directions directly to the tournament building.

Thanks to all the teams who bid. I look forward to seeing the biggest and best ACF Fall yet!

Also, the first packet deadline is still almost three weeks out. That's plenty of time to band together, write a packet, save $50, and earn the everlasting thankfulness of the ACF Fall editors!

If all goes well, you'll get three or four Harvard packets by that early deadline.

Hopefully a couple of teams from RPI could attend the Brandeis site but this is totally speculative as I'm only in the early stages of forming a team.

There's nothing wrong with driving to Brandeis, but the Carnegie Mellon location is about 100 miles closer.

I think you have us confused with RIT or something. We're located in Troy, NY (right outside Albany), about 160 miles from Brandeis

I must've misread the abbreviation in your signature. You're absolutely right; Rensselaer is much closer to Brandeis than CMU, and I should stop trying to comprehend things while sleep-deprived.

Any update on whether or not the mirror at UTK will work out? All the current sites are about equidistantly 5-6 hours away from us, but Knoxville's an hour or so closer and we've never been to a tournament there before.

I'm optimistic that the Knoxville site is a go, and it will probably be hosted on Sunday. UTK's coordinator Markus Iturriaga is currently waiting to see if he can get rooms. More soon.

I'd like to point out that the TD of the Mississippi State site is not going to be me, since I will be playing. I will still handle contact with teams and everything, but I am going to be playing in the tournament. The TD's name is Matt Kettleman.

Andrew, if Rancho Bernardo attends ACF Fall, would we have teh $75 dollar discount? We played at Zot Bowl over the summer, but we were playing with Auroni and not really representing our school.

Many, if not all. That's not to say they're not good (they're very good, on the whole), it's just that there are inevitably lots of repeats, and add that to stuff that's cut for being too hard or for being poorly written, and you've got a lot of holes in an eighteen-packet set.

Yeah, I don't have it.
So, I sent you an e-mail and you have the copy of the packet I forwarded to Chris, but apparently either hotmail died or I closed without hitting the send button last Sunday night  . In any case, hopefully things are cleared up.

SURE YOU WERE

also, doesn't the new ACF team count towards programs that have played after 2007? (instead of like, anytime prior to this quizbowl season?)

The packet submitted by Florida State A will feature players who have not played prior to September 1, 2007 so there shouldn't be a $25 penalty, unless you are charging people for submitting optional packets.

The ACF Southwest Tournament at OU is still being held. We have 4 teams signed up plus two house teams. Only one team is submitting a packet (Langston). The rest are new to ACF. The teams attending are as follows:
Tulsa
Langston
Central Arkansas
Liberal Academy of Arts and Sciences
OU (2 teams)

David, did you not get my e-mail earlier this week? Unfortunately, Tulsa will not be able to make it to ACF Fall. I hope this does not create too much of a problem.

Angelo, I did not get an email from you about none of the Tulsa teams attending. We will still have the tournament since we will have 4-5 teams (depending on how many house teams we field).

I've started a spreadsheet to calculate PATH for the players at each of the sites. I'll be adding to it as I can.

The spreadsheet is here: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key= ... k5aQ&hl=en
