Quentin Roper and myself are currently searching for 2 teammates. If you're interested e-mail me at [email protected] . Although we have already finished about half of our packet, we may politely ask any possible teammates to chip in and help us finish it off.

I really hoped and thought I and/or FSU would be coming to this tournament, but it doesn't look like it right now. I apologize if I got anyone's hopes up.

Hey everyone, we'd like to start getting packets for this as soon as you're able to send them in.

I have posted a field update within the first post after the tournament announcement.

Also, I'm hoping for a status update on the following players/teams (ie: are you coming, have you found a team, do you want me to help you find a team, etc):
-Eric Mukherjee/Brown
-Maryland
-Brandeis
-Truman State (besides Kent)
-Chris Carter/various Minnesota HSers who would be interested in such things

If anyone else is coming to this, either with a whole team or as a free agent, please let me know as soon as you can.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like flying is in our budget for this year. Maybe next year. We plan on attending the MIT mirror though.

I have joined the team of Paul Drube & Quentin Roper, and I should be able to finish their packet by next Thursday, September 25 (+/- $0). We could still use a fourth player, though. If Lawrence University from Appleton, WI still has no plans of sending its own team, their Greg Peterson would be ideal. I can always be reached at [email protected]

I think we're sending people out to help those at the airport get to campus or wherever they're staying using public transportation; we'll let you know when we know for sure.

The deadline for team registration is almost nigh. I'd like to know if you're planning to submit a packet before this weekend is over. The final packet deadline is just under two weeks away, and the no penalty deadline is today.

If you're already registered and listed in the field update, I assume that you're going to submit a packet, so no need to tell me that you are.

Hey guys, we'd love to get a bunch of packets as soon as possible. There are four teams who have submitted packets to me so far. Seven packets are still out there.

Also, I would really appreciate hearing from Chicago about how many teams they expect, because it affects how many house teams we will have in order to balance the field, and because of that, how many packets it is necessary for us to produce.

We have had one (1) practice so far this year, which a bunch of the old people did not attend. But I will claim (with reasonable degree of confidence) that we will have 3 teams.

Hey people interested in Rob Pilatus:

If you're planning on staying for Sunday, I'd find it really helpful to hear if you're planning on playing trash. You still would have until that Friday night to finalize your registration (and Sunday to pay), but I want to start getting schedules together. Hey all,

So, due to a cash flow problem (I didn't have any), I didn't purchase my ticket till the last minute and am not leaving town until Monday morning. Is anybody staying over Sunday night who would be interested in splitting a hotel room of some kind? I can be reached at [email protected]. I'm on the Maryland team, btw.

I realize that a tournament, to which I provided several questions, running a full round robin takes quite a while. I was just sort of looking for some updates, maybe.

I was planning to add updates, but got busy compiling for trash.

As of round 11, Carleton went home. Chicago A lost to Laferbrook, while Laferbrook lost twice to avoid the hellish scenario of a circle of death with Weiner's team, also with one loss. Chicago has a game in hand as well as a 60 point lead in PPG. Rob apparently elicits a ton of negs, as both Sorice and Westbrook have stacked up statlines like 1-2-7 and 0-1-6 in his room. Magin is currently leading for PPG with 94, followed by Weiner, Brendan, Seth and Sorice.

Some quick results: Snitches Get Stitches (Weiner/Dees/Boone/Carter) beat Chicago Roast Beef Icee (Teitler/Koo/Gauthier/Perkins) in the single-game final. SGS was down by 85 with four tossups remaining, but managed to pick up three of those tossups (the fourth went dead) and convert the bonuses well enough to win by five. The final score was 240-235. Leading individual scorers were Jonathan Magin, Brendan Byrne, and Matt Weiner, and the neg prize was won by Ryan Westbrook with 37(!); more detailed stats will be posted as soon as possible.

EDIT: ARE YOU HAPPY NOW GEORGE STEVENS

This may seem like totally lame quibbling (because it is), but I got screwed out of a power given to William in our round against Snitches get Stitches; I went 3-1-0 in that round. Clearly this is very important, because it helps Fred's fantasy team and it gives me the slightest of PPG advantages over David Seal. YES IN YOUR SETH-ROGEN-LIKE FACE DAVID SEAL

Another minor stat error: I'm shown as having 5 negs against Snitches, but I had 0 in that round.

Wow, apparently I got a 15 in the Maryland game...although looking at the packet, this apparently was a mistake on someone's part because I clearly buzzed in after the power mark. I also thought I played against Carleton, but there are no stats for that game.

I really liked this tournament. I already went over and praised the actual set, so I have some stuff to talk about here. I thought all of the moderators were good, and the staffing seemed to go well. It would have been kind of fun to have the occasional stat posting, but really that is something that doesn't affect my enjoyment either way. My main problem with this tournament was just the same one as with most college tournaments I've gone to, which was that no matter what happened the schedule ended up pretty far off. I don't know when we started playing the finals, but it seemed pretty late. I do agree with Matt that it's better to focus on the main event than making sure side tournaments get in, but at the same time I do want to try and figure out what always seems to go wrong and get that under control so tournaments are run more efficiently. For what its worth, I don't think big round robins vs. rebracketing is the problem here, and I am a fan of playing the big round robin since that means you get to play against more people and everyone played the exact same schedule, making the results a little more overall meaningful, even if the individual games are not always as competitive. Especially at opens I like the system since the reason teams go to these events is to play a lot of quizbowl and run into all the good teams, which can't happen for a non-top team if they are put in a bracket with only a couple top teams. Speaking of what opens are and aren't for, they certainly aren't for teams to leave after a while because the questions aren't ultra-easy or their team isn't playing well. Carleton, this means you guys. You screwed over not only every team who was expecting to play a game against you (especially some who flew all the way in from places like DC), but also the tournament direction since they had to find someone to staff the room you were supposed to staff during your bye round. Luckily for you, your coach showed up by pure chance then or else something more frustrating would have had to happen. Really, this is what high level quizbowl is about, and everyone who really cares about good events is in agreement that what you pulled was really lame. Please, everyone, if you sign up for a tournament, stay until the tournament is over unless theres an emergency or you've already worked something out with the TD, or you will get people just as angry at you as people were over Carleton this weekend.

I'm going to agree with Charlie on the Carleton issue. There really is not rationale for leaving early, especially when the field is from all over the place. I didn't get to enjoy Ted's literature, and while I wasn't infuriated, I was infuriated, and I hope someone from Carleton is reading the boards so that the next time they consider doing it, they won't unless extreme circumstances occur.
