I still prefer Tim Hartman to be my teammate like last year, but I do not know whether he is also among the thirty early entrants. With so much interest in history doubles, could the teams be expanded to triples or even quadruples? Last month's experimental doubles became experimental quadruples with forty-seven players almost uniformly distributed amongst twelve teams. With triples or quadruples, more toss-ups would be answered sooner and more bonuses would be fully converted, so the tourney might end an hour sooner, allowing all of us more sleep before the main Chicago Open.

Unfortunately, due to the extremely high interest in this event, I still need about 4-5 moderators. Please email me if you are interested.

Due to a shortage of available staffing talent, this might get changed to History Triples. I will try to let you guys know what's happening ASAP.

One possibility is to play this tournament with 12 teams of three, 2 teams of two, and 2 teams of one. That would require only eight moderators, which is how many I currently have if everybody who has volunteered can make it.

If we clumped all the best players on the two and one person teams, I don't think it would be that unfair.

It appears Paul Drube is unable to come to this tournament, so I am now looking for a teammate again. Although if we end up doing the multiple team size thing, it would probably be easy enough to stick me with a team of 2.

I am looking for a teammate for this, or two teammates if it gets changed to triples. I can be e-mailed at [email protected]

Also, if there aren't enough moderators, would it be a good idea to give teams byes, and have them staff at that time? I would have no problem doing that during a bye. I don't have a problem playing on three person teams at all though.

Jeremy Eaton has dropped from this event (but hopefully not from CO entirely) due to a Friday commitment. I am thusly joining Mike and Brendan in the free agent pool, or whatever full-scale overhaul will happen if we do the 3-2-1 thing.

QFAgreement. I'd prefer having a bye round and staffing it to playing on a three-man team, but I'm totally fine with playing on a three-man team.

With Bentley and Ray losing their teammates, that gives us 15 teams and a 5-person (maybe 7-person) free agent pool for a total of 35-37 people.

That would need about nine moderators, right? So call it 18 teams playing... give two a bye every round and that's eight games, nine moderators. In other words, room for Evan, Ahmad, or Evan to honor their "?" by not moderating.

If we finish with only 17 teams, one bye per round gets eight games, eight moderators. It looks like 17 is a better number, then.

Update:

My desperate cry for help has netted me two new moderators. If everybody who ever told me they can moderate this tournament can in fact make it, we will be able to handle 20 teams of two people. But that is a HUGE if. People make last-minute plans, people find out they have doctors appointments or weddings, people sign up without realizing what they've done, people sign up while under the influence, etc.

What I will next do is send a mass-mail to all the people who volunteered to read asking them to confirm that they can make it. Anyone know Colby's email?

With eighteen teams, we are going to form two brackets of 9. Each round, the two bye teams will play each other in an "exhibition game" that will not count towards the standings.

At that point, there will be two packets left. We could do a one-game playoff where team 1 from bracket a plays team 1 from bracket b, team 2 from bracket a plays team 2 from bracket b, etc., or we could do something with two packets.

Anyway, my new mission is to email all 36 people on this list and make sure they can in fact come...I haven't heard from some of them in a good long time.

Also, is anyone volunteering to bring buzzers to this tournament? I would be very thankful to those who are willing to do so.

Heh, it's Evan Adams, not Adam Evans.

So long as you're going to have byes, you can probably also get teams on the byes to staff if moderators don't show up.

Whee, after two months out of the flow of the QB world, I come back...and will be coming to this, now that I know for sure I can afford the trip up.

I just want to apologize to the Chicago folks and anyone who was stuck in the room without a buzzer ..... I should have checked to see that there was a power supply. Its pretty embarrassing, and totally my fault.

By now, the West Coast side event should be either over or already in progress; you can feel free to discuss the questions. I will be editing typos out of the set and then sending them to all reputable online quizbowl archives, where they will hopefully be available for public download. Donald Taylor will be posting the stats soon.

Now to the part where I list people I am thanking:

The following people came to moderate: Trygve Meade, Katy Peters, Evan Nagler, Margo Emont, Kathleen Kuo, Colby Burnett, Gautam Kandlikar, Ahmad Ragab, Bryn, Evan Silberman, Aaron Rosenberg, and Lorin Burte.

In addition to staffing the tournament, Lorin Burte served as a substitute player on two different teams when people were unable to make it on time due to circumstances beyond their control. In addition to playing the tournament, Chris Ray kept track of buzzers and laptops. Donald Taylor ran registration and ran the stats room, which posted frequent updates in the hallway.

Many people gladly volunteered to bring laptops and/or buzzers; too many to list, in fact. However, without them the tournament would have been impossible, and they should be commended.

I would like to thank the following people for writing questions: Kyle Haddad-Fonda, Chris Chiego, Andrew Wehrman, Billy Beyer, Jon Wong, Dr. Seth Kendall, and Peter A. Austin, Esq. I am especially grateful to Evan Nagler, who looked over the questions and generated the schedule. Charles Meigs helped me determine the brackets and also made substantive and useful comments on a number of questions. Eric Driscoll (formerly of State College) helped me with miscellaneous matters.

It’s entirely possible I have left somebody out from this; if so, rest assured it is entirely due to my forgetfulness and not a lack of gratitude or, worse yet, a deliberate slight.

This was a phenomenal improvement over last year's set. There were a lot of interesting and creative tossup answers, though there were also quite a few duds that tried too hard (tossup on "historians" for instance)

George Stevens, you amaze with how good you are at history. Good job indeed.
