Sword Bowl (1/26/08) at UT-Chattanooga

Posted: Mon Nov 12, 2007 2:15 am
by Your Genial Quizmaster
UTC will host our tenth annual (!) Sword Bowl on Sat., Jan. 26, 2008. This will be an untimed mACF-style collegiate tournament, aimed primarily for less experienced teams. However, we will have an upper division as well, with the same questions used for both divisions. Question level should be fairly easy by current circuit standards. The base fee of $140 per team assumes no packet submission, but discounts can be earned to bring that all the way to $0.

SCHEDULE: Registration will begin at 9 AM EST 1/26/08, with announcements and the inevitable schedule adjustments at 9:45 and tournament play beginning at 10 AM. Tournament HQ will be 129 Grote Hall on the UTC campus; see directions below. We hope to be into playoffs by 7:30 PM and finished by 8:30 -- lately that's been the norm, but we'd be unwise to make any promises.

REGISTRATION: Our only pre-registration requirements are that you tell us:
- How many teams to expect
- In which division each team will compete
- How many buzzers and officials (if any) you expect to bring
- Whether or not you're submitting questions, and which option you're choosing (see below.)
Please e-mail this information to utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com. Also, if your team includes players with disabilities or access issues, it will simplify things if you let us know in advance. That way we can take it into account when scheduling (building changes, etc.)

Payment, rosters, etc., can be handled on the day of the tournament. Payment is expected on tournament day unless arranged otherwise in advance. If you need an invoice or other official paperwork in advance, let us know and we'll be happy to oblige.

ELIGIBILITY: This tournament is designed for teams of current college students, with all players on a given team affiliated with the same university. If space permits, we will accept mixed-affiliation or purely open (i.e., non-collegiate) teams. However, the field is limited to 36 teams, and collegiate teams will be given first priority.

The tournament field will be divided into two divisions for separate play and awards. We expect that the majority of our teams will be in Division II, which is limited to players in their first and second year of intercollegiate quizbowl play, with one extra year of eligibility allowed for players on teams from 2-year schools. (Note: due to the difference in formats, prior experience in College Bowl Inc., Honda Campus All-Star Challenge, or tournaments restricted to junior colleges will not count as prior experience when determining Division II eligibility.)

FEES:
Base fee: $140
Packet discount: -$50 for a full packet of 25 tossups and 25 bonuses, meeting specifications below, submitted by Sun., Jan. 5, 2008. Packet must be original and must be blind to all other teams, including those from the same school.
Additional - $20 for full packet received by Sun., Dec 16, or - $10 for full packet received by Sun., Dec. 30
Partial packet discount: -$25 for 10 tossups and 10 bonuses by 1/5/08 (this option available for Division II teams only)

Note that just by submitting a packet by 12/16, you can cut your fees in half. Even if you have never written questions before, we encourage you to get the question-writing experience. Substandard questions from first-time packet authors that show sufficient effort will still receive the discount, regardless of whether or not we use them for this tournament. However, if we find evidence of plagiarism, you can kiss your discount goodbye. And remember that every team's questions must remain blind to the other teams from the same school.

Further discounts: (Note that fees can be reduced to zero!)
- $10 for teams making their first appearance at UTC
- $10 for second teams et seq. from the same school
- $ 5 for working lockout buzzer system (one discount per team unless we're short of buzzers)
- $10 for each competent full-time official [plus dinner at Provino's Sat. night if you can join us, or a free set of the packets if you can't]
- $15 for each full-time official brought to TrashMasters at UTC on 12/1/2007
- $25 for each full, original *high school level* packet (25 tossups/25 bonuses), sent by Fri., Jan. 25, for use UTC’s March 1 high school tournament.
- $10 for each partial set of original *high school level* questions (10 tossups/10 bonuses or equivalent) sent by Fri., Jan. 25.

PACKET SPECIFICATIONS:

We'll say it again: Every team's questions must remain blind to the other teams from the same school.

DESTINATION: Charlie Steinhice will serve as editor-in-chief. So that the entire editorial crew will have access to submissions, please send packets to utcacfediting [at] gmail [dot] com, rather than the UTC team e-mail address listed above for registration.

DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY: As noted above, Sword Bowl is intended to be easy by current circuit standards. While not beginning with giveaway clues, most tossups should be answerable by most teams by the end of the question. Bonuses should be such that a novice team stands a good chance of getting at least 10 pts., a good team 20, and the best teams all 30 pts. If you’re just dying to ask something that’s pretty obscure, at least confine it to one bonus part. Anyone who would like sample questions, please let us know and we'll e-mail you some.

EXCLUSIVITY: This is the third time we've said this, but we can't stress this enough: Packets must be unique to each *team*, and blind to all other teams including the others from your school. Since Sword Bowl may have mirror events scheduled elsewhere, questions must be original and blind to teams elsewhere in the country. Please do not play-test them online in advance.

FORMAT:
-- Please arrange questions separately by category. If you want to make life easier for us, separate tossups and bonuses, and use the order of categories below.
-- Please e-mail the packet as either an MS Word or RTF file, with the essential parts of the answer in bold and underlined.
-- Make sure the words “for ten pointsâ€

Not counting some pending maybes, here’s the field we have so far for UTC's Sword Bowl on Sat. 1/26/08:

Bevill State (2 teams, both Div. II)
Georgia Perimeter (Div. II)
Georgia Tech (Div. I)
Shorter (Div. II)
UTC (2 teams – 1 Div. I, 1 Div. II)
Wake Forest (Div. ??)

Obviously we have plenty of room. If you want to attend, please e-mail us at utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com, and be sure to note which division your team will play in.

Also obviously, it's too late for a discount for a Sword Bowl packet, but you can still get a discount by writing high school questions for our use.

Georgia Tech (1 Div. I)
Knoxville College (1 Div. II)
Shorter (1 Div. II)
Tennessee (2 teams, both Div. II)

Congratulations again to the University of Alabama for wins in both divisions of Sword Bowl 2008. Results follow, but first some gratitude:

Special thanks to chief deputy editor David Moore and Stephen Wise of Drake for heavy double-duty writing and editing above and beyond the call of duty. Thanks go to our partners at Drake and Oklahoma who provided a substantial volume of questions, and to freelance authors Jeremy Hixson, Ahmad Ragab, and UCLA (Tirth Patel, Chris Ngoon, and Seema Ullal.) Thanks also go to Brendan Byrne, Stephen Webb, Dave Leach, and Stephen Taylor for editorial assistance.

I'd also like to thank the five, count 'em five, teams who submitted packets: Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Shorter, and both Bevill State teams. (A special tip of the hat to Whitney Richert, a freshman from Shorter College. She wrote an entire packet; maybe that'll shame some experienced players into putting forth the effort for Moon Pie.)

Sword Bowl was blessed with an outstanding, experienced reader corps. Besides the aforementioned David Moore and Dave Leach, thanks to Scotti Whitmire, Markus Iturriaga, Tony Bush, Chuck Pearson, Glenn Allen Bobo, Toni Van Winkle, Wally and Shannon Edmondson, John Kilby, and Tiffany Willis; special thanks to Nikki Poarch and Ashley Rousselle for stats & tournament logistics. (Apologies to anyone else I overlooked.)

One more reminder re question security: While Sword Bowl and its collegiate mirrors are finished, there are still some high school tournaments that will use some of these questions in edited form. So please don't reveal question specifics in a public forum.

Now, those results and stats...

UTC actually finally has a website and a webmaster, and full SQBS-based stats reports for Sword Bowl and our fall 2007 tournaments will be posted soon. In the meantime, here are summary results in the old-fashioned, hard-to-read method:

Congrats to Knoxville for representing the HBCU's. They were not chosen as part of the "Strong 64" for HCASC and that's a shame.

Charlie says it best -- winning beats losing, but losing beats not playing (that's a rough paraphrase). We should be glad to see new teams on the circuit, especially from a group of colleges that has been all but absent from circuit quizbowl. I'm happy about it, so I know KGeee (as the lone HBCU-affiliated member of this board) is too.

I don't know how many other circuit events Knoxville has been to, if any, but 42 ppg isn't too terribly bad if you've only been playing Honda/CBI.

For winning a game in a foreign format. A lot of people literally had their first taste of quiz bowl at the college level in the hcasc program and never even touched a buzzer in their life before that. I imagine that most college players at other larger universities, for the most part, played in high school, as well.

Knoxville College didn't have to fall back on Charlie's Rule #3 ("Getting stomped still beats not playing") -- on their first try, they already made it up to Rule #2 ("Losing beats getting stomped.")

Not only did Knoxville College win a game at their first-ever circuit tournament, in an unfamiliar format, on questions tougher than any they've heard before, but they were competitive in several of their other games. Three of their losses were by 10, 20, and 40 points to more experienced teams -- and the latter two were against Bevill State Blue and Alabama C, the teams that finished 2nd and 3rd.

Also note that Tonami Playman made the All-Star team as the #5 scorer, averaging 21+ ppg despite a high interrupt count. I believe that makes Tonami only the second HBCU player to earn All-Star status at a UTC-hosted tournament, after John Thomas of Morehouse in 2001 (although a couple of others have come close.)

Honestly, cornfused, is it that hard to be gracious?

Charlie's absolutely right. Teams have to start somewhere, and it's much better for them to participate in a legitimate tournament than the crap that CBI puts together, even if they don't perform well. The experience will hopefully be a positive one in spot of the W-L record and lead to more teams competing on the college circuit rather than being trapped in a game using standards from the 1970s.

Well, I gave it a shot. The Scobo site said it had successfully uploaded all the SQBS files, but only the standings page currently shows up:

It's a start. Like I said, we finally have a webmaster, and mercifully it's ain't me. Stay tuned...
