The Poll

Post by Mr. Kwalter »

It is now time for the storied nationals poll. But first, will teams please post their intended nationals teams so we know what we're voting on? Question of the century: Vik probably isn't playing for Texas. Anyway, voters, send in your top 20 teams to ekwartler at gmail dot com. You can vote once per program (as in, don't vote for VCU B). Also, don't vote twice. Poll will be closed after a suitable amount of time has passed.

Thanks,

Eric Kwartler

We're pretty much up in the air right now, and it looks like whatever teams Princeton sends will be organized at the last minute. That said:

ACF:
There's recently been some internal talk about trying to organize a full strength team i.e. Chris Frankel, Lenny Kostovetsky, Jordan Boyd-Graber, and Dan Benediktson. However, that hinges on two factors, namely Lenny's ability to make the trip and my ability to have sufficient progress on my thesis to allow for it. If both of those are not met (and the chances seem less than favorable that they will), Princeton will not be sending a team to Michigan.

NAQT:
The tentative roster is Lenny Kostovetsky, Jordan Boyd-Graber, Dan Benediktson, and Will Wong.
"They sometimes get fooled by the direction a question is going to take, and that's intentional," said Reid. "The players on these teams are so good that 90 percent of the time they could interrupt the question and give the correct answer if the questions didn't take those kinds of turns. That wouldn't be fun to watch, so every now and then as I design these suckers, I say to myself, 'Watch this!' and wait 'til we're on camera. I got a lot of dirty looks this last tournament."

You show much promise, grasshopper.

But seriously, ACF Nationals will almost certainly be me playing solo.

Our NAQT team is likely to be something like myself, Micha, Marko, and Tim, although that isn't fixed in stone yet.

As if people will vote for Ottawa, but...

Assuming the drive gets arranged, the NAQT team will be:
Tamara Vardomskaya
Dan Barber
Philippe Marchand
(and possibly one more undergrad)

The McGill team should be the same that went to the 2005 ICT in D2. I have no idea if Queen's, SFU, and UBC are taking up their offers (golly, 5 Canadian schools)

I don't think any Canadian teams are considering ACF "nationals".

UL Lafayette

UL Lafayette may not get many votes either, but our four going to the NAQT ICT are:

Jake Sundberg
Scott Broussard
Chris Fontenot
Bryan Fontenot

This is the same team that won DII in the Southwest Sectional.

As for ACF Nationals, I don't think we'll be going this year

I'm two years removed from playing in college, but GO TO ACF NATIONALS!

It's not nearly as bad as you've heard that it is!

A couple of notes:

From what I've heard: SFU will be, UBC likely will not be. No idea about Queen's.

Regarding ACF, considering how coolly ACF Fall was regarded in Eastern Canada, bsmith's comments don't particularly surprise me.

Uh ... I think it's just a reference to the fact that Ben was talking about Canadian teams and that "nationals" implies "U.S. national championship." Back to your regularly scheduled poll thread ...

I'm assuming that ACF would have no problem welcoming Canadian/British/whatever teams for their highest-tier tournament (perhaps it has be done already, I don't know). Thus, the term "nationals" would not really apply.

Sorry. Last year, press and school admins couldn't understand why we had to go across the border to attend something we referred to as "nationals" (the ICT). Didn't mean to create a fuss.

Back on topic. With UBC not attending anything, it appears they will not be considered for the poll. However, they cracked the top 20 at the ICT last year, and we may see another Canadian team do that this year.

Yes, all teams are welcome at ACF nationals. I hear even clowns were allowed to play last year.

Williams will almost certainly be comprised of Daniel Klein, the Davids Letzler and Mathias, and Zach Thomas at ICT. That group may also be representing us at ACF Nats, or Brian Hirshman may be replacing one of the players (and to answer Bruce's question from the other thread, we're all UG).

Vanderbilt's ICT lineup will probably be the same as at SCT:

Matt Keller
Paul Gauthier
Saurabh Vishnubhakat
Katy Peters

There's a small chance of including someone else too, but this is probably it. Since we haven't made it out of the southeast yet, I'm interested to see how we'll do. It looks like we probably won't be able to make it to ACF Nats, though, which is disappointing. My master's thesis is due April 3, and since our DII team got a bid to ICT as well, we may not have enough funds for both trips.

So Larry's revelation, I think, totally throws off the poll, because if that's the case, I think Berkeley rockets to the top. They are going to be the most complete team at the ICT, certainly.
