FLopen 2020 Mid-Atlantic and Southeast Mirror at UVA (11/21)

Post by Destructive Desmond »

The University of Virginia Academic Competition Club is pleased to announce that we will be hosting an open mirror of FLopen 2020 for the Mid-Atlantic region on Saturday, November 21st, 2020 via Discord. Information about the set can be found here; difficulty is similar to 2019 Fall Open or 2019 PIANO.

Eligibility: As determined by the editors, teams from NJ, PA, MD, DE, VA, WV, and DC can play this mirror. Any teams from these states can play, regardless of institutional affiliation. Regional exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Fee structure: The base fee will be $75. Payment can be made by Venmo, Zelle, or check.

Registration: We have tentatively capped the field at 10. To register, please add yourself to this spreadhseet and email [email protected]. Free agents can also add their names to the spreadsheet.

If you have any questions about the tournament, please contact me at [email protected]. We hope to see you online in November!

Because the Southeast mirror of FLopen has been cancelled, all teams who were planning to play that mirror can sign up to play UVA's mirror, along with any other teams from KY, TN, SC, NC, GA, AL, MS, and FL who would like to play our mirror. We plan to keep all other details of our mirror the same.

A few updates:

-We have decided to lower the cost of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast mirror of FLopen to $75.

-We expect to run the tournament as a four team round robin and try to get through as many packets as possible.

-If we do not have four teams signed up by 11/14, we will cancel the mirror.

This tournament went well. Thank you to everyone who signed up, especially to the people who helped us fill some open spots by signing up last-minute. Thanks to Alana Dickey, Mark Bailey, Daniel Xue, Caleb Bales, and myself for being amazing staffers. Thank you to Alana for doing the early parts of organizing for this tournament. Thank you to Karan Gurazada for providing the wonderful Discord bot that was used to set up this tournament's server. Thank you to the creators of TJ Electronic Scoresheets, which continued to be a pleasure to use for this tournament. Enormous thanks to Pratyush Jaishanker, who reworked the TJ Electronic Scoresheets template to work for FLOpen's 22/22 packets within, like, 30 minutes of me DM'ing him on Discord.

We used buzzin.live for this tournament and it worked very well. buzzin.live entirely eliminates situations in which someone buzzes but the reader continues reading because the buzzer makes a real buzzer sound. We had staffers create a new buzzin.live game for each round and share the code in the respective round's Discord text channel, which is a practice I can recommend to anyone planning an online tournament.

Congratulations to Virginia for going undefeated all day and to In My FLOpen Era for getting 2nd place with a 6-4 record. Congratulations to our top individual scorers: Itamar Naveh-Benjamin (95 PPG), John Stathis (58.5 PPG), and Albert Zhang (42.22 PPG).

UVA is excited to host more tournaments in the coming semester. We hope to see many of y'all again!
